10 biggest salary cap hits for Texans in 2025 ahead of free agency
The Houston Texans enter free agency with little money and many problems. It's definitely not the ideal plan to have going into what feels like a must-overachieve season. Houston could shore up more cap space by trimming the fat with roster cuts. So far, offensive lineman Shaq Mason and defensive tackle Denico Autry have been rumored to be on the bubble. Tight end Dalton Schultz, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and offensive tackle Tytus Howard might have underacheived last season, but their dead cap hit and limited return would only hurt the Texans rather than help this upcoming season. Where things will stand at the NFL Combine, the Texans are expected to have roughly $5.7 million in cap space for 2025, which is currently among the bottom 10 in the league. That gives general manager Nick Caserio little to work with as he looks to build the roster up in free agency. Here's a look at the 10 biggest cap hits currently on the books for the Texans in 2025 ahead of any roster cuts. All salary cap numbers courtesy of Over the Cap.

One Texans standout listed as potential cut candidates this offseason
With the 2025 NFL offseason in full swing, sights leave the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl win in the past and turn toward the NFL Scouting Combine next week. Currently, the rumor mill is swirling around potential moves that could alter the 2025 season via free agency. But while some free agents are known, others still remain on their current roster and soon could hit the market. The Houston Texans could make several cuts to potentially save money entering free agency. Tight end Dalton Schultz, offensive tackle Tytus Howard and offensive lineman Shaq Mason have all been rumored to be on the chopping block, but nothing is set in stone entering next week's combine. Matt Okada listed several roster-cut candidates from both the NFC and AFC. For the Texans, only defensive lineman Denico Autry appeared as the top candidate set to leave ahead of the legal tampering period on March 10. 'Denico Autry has had a consistent, 10-plus-year career across multiple teams, but it might be winding to a close after a middling age-34 season in Houston,' Odka wrote. 'Autry started just two of 10 games played, logged just three sacks and six QB hits (both his fewest since 2016) and carries a $10.3 million cap hit heading into 2025. Houston only saves $5.8 million by cutting him pre-June 1, so Autry would be better designated as a post-June 1 cut ($8.8 million in cap savings). The veteran will likely be released either way.' Autry's uninspiring first season in Houston came with several faults. He was suspended for the first six games after violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing substances during training camp. Once he returned, there was never a set role for him between defensive tackle and defensive end. Then again, DeMeco Ryans raved of Autry's leadership for a younger defensive line room and his position flexibility. General manager Nick Caserio also called him a 'junkyard dog' who provided the type of mentality needed to win, Houston should cut several players, but Autry feels like a later designation if anything. Moving him down the pecking order while several other offensive players move up seems more sustainable entering next month's new calendar season. The Texans currently have less than $5 million in salary to work with entering free agency.

Who is the Texans top cut candidate for the offseason?
Who is the Houston Texans' top cut candidate for the 2025 offseason? According to most, there's one name that stands above the rest. While expected to be a focal point of Houston's run defense, veteran defensive lineman Denico Autry struggled to duplicate his success initially found with the Tennessee Titans. Pro Football Network recently released its top option to cut for all 32 rosters. To no one's surprise, Autry was the representative for the AFC South champions. "Autry played just 25% of the snaps for the team in 2024 and finished with three sacks and nine pressures," PFN wrote. "Those are not great numbers for someone costing nearly $11 million against the cap. Therefore, saving just under $6 million by cutting him might allow them to use that money for a better cost-to-production ratio than they are getting from Autry." Currently, Houston has under $10 million in cap space with multiple holes that must be filled. The Texans could cut other names, including offensive linemen Tytus Howard and Shaq Mason, but both could also be retained on reworked contracts. Autry, who was suspended for six games after testing positive for PEDs this offseason, started on the wrong foot for Houston. He might just need a fresh start on the open market entering 2025.
