One Texans standout listed as potential cut candidates this offseason

USA Today20-02-2025

With the 2025 NFL offseason in full swing, sights leave the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl win in the past and turn toward the NFL Scouting Combine next week.
Currently, the rumor mill is swirling around potential moves that could alter the 2025 season via free agency. But while some free agents are known, others still remain on their current roster and soon could hit the market.
The Houston Texans could make several cuts to potentially save money entering free agency. Tight end Dalton Schultz, offensive tackle Tytus Howard and offensive lineman Shaq Mason have all been rumored to be on the chopping block, but nothing is set in stone entering next week's combine.
NFL.com's Matt Okada listed several roster-cut candidates from both the NFC and AFC. For the Texans, only defensive lineman Denico Autry appeared as the top candidate set to leave ahead of the legal tampering period on March 10.
'Denico Autry has had a consistent, 10-plus-year career across multiple teams, but it might be winding to a close after a middling age-34 season in Houston,' Odka wrote. 'Autry started just two of 10 games played, logged just three sacks and six QB hits (both his fewest since 2016) and carries a $10.3 million cap hit heading into 2025. Houston only saves $5.8 million by cutting him pre-June 1, so Autry would be better designated as a post-June 1 cut ($8.8 million in cap savings). The veteran will likely be released either way.'
Autry's uninspiring first season in Houston came with several faults. He was suspended for the first six games after violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing substances during training camp. Once he returned, there was never a set role for him between defensive tackle and defensive end.
Then again, DeMeco Ryans raved of Autry's leadership for a younger defensive line room and his position flexibility. General manager Nick Caserio also called him a 'junkyard dog' who provided the type of mentality needed to win,
Houston should cut several players, but Autry feels like a later designation if anything. Moving him down the pecking order while several other offensive players move up seems more sustainable entering next month's new calendar season.
The Texans currently have less than $5 million in salary to work with entering free agency.

3 Dolphins veterans whose roles will be pushed by rookies in 2025

The post 3 Dolphins veterans whose roles will be pushed by rookies in 2025 appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Miami Dolphins are entering the 2025 NFL season with a renewed sense of urgency after an 8-9 finish in 2024. General Manager Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel have made it clear: competition will be fierce, and no veteran's role is safe. With a draft class headlined by physical, NFL-ready prospects and a flurry of offseason moves, several established Dolphins now find themselves in direct competition with rookies eager to make their mark. Here are three veterans whose roles are most at risk as the Dolphins' rookie class arrives. Liam Eichenberg's Versatility will be Tested by Jonah Savaiinaea Liam Eichenberg has been a mainstay on Miami's offensive line since being drafted in the second round in 2021, making 52 starts across every position on the line. However, his tenure has been marked by inconsistency and unmet expectations. The Dolphins' decision to trade up for Arizona guard Jonah Savaiinaea with the 37th overall pick signals a clear shift in philosophy and a challenge to Eichenberg's standing. Advertisement Savaiinaea is already penciled in as a likely starter, bringing a reputation as a hyper-aggressive run blocker with the mentality to 'take someone's job'. His college tape shows a player who finishes blocks and brings a physical edge that Miami's line has sorely lacked. Eichenberg, meanwhile, is now facing a battle just to make the roster, with free agent James Daniels and Savaiinaea expected to anchor the guard spots. While Eichenberg's versatility makes him a valuable backup, his days as an expected starter are over. He'll need to outperform a younger group of linemen, including Braeden Daniels, Chasen Hines, and Andrew Meyer, to avoid being a camp casualty. The message is clear: Eichenberg must prove he belongs, or risk being pushed aside by Savaiinaea and the new wave of linemen. Alexander Mattison's Short-Yardage Role Threatened by Ollie Gordon The Dolphins signed Alexander Mattison from the Raiders this offseason, envisioning him as a third running back and short-yardage specialist. However, Miami's selection of Oklahoma State's Ollie Gordon in the sixth round jeopardizes Mattison's role. Gordon, known for his physical running style and reliable pass blocking, brings fresh legs and upside to a backfield that struggled in power situations last year. Advertisement Mattison's 2024 campaign was underwhelming, 420 rushing yards, four touchdowns, and just 3.2 yards per carry. While he was expected to provide veteran stability, Gordon's college production and skill set make him a direct competitor for those valuable short-yardage snaps. Gordon's ability to contribute on third down as a pass protector could tip the scales in his favor, especially as the Dolphins look to get younger and more dynamic at the position. Mattison finds himself in a crowded and competitive backfield with Jaylen Wright in the mix as a strong pass blocker. If Gordon impresses in camp and preseason, Mattison could find his roster spot in peril or, at best, significantly reduce his role. Cam Smith is Under Pressure from Jason Marshall Jr. Cam Smith, a second-year cornerback, is one of the few Miami defenders who benefited from the team's draft strategy, as the Dolphins waited until the fifth round to select a cornerback, Jason Marshall Jr. from Florida. However, this doesn't mean Smith's role is secure. After playing just 155 snaps in two seasons and facing questions about his commitment, Smith is under pressure to prove he can handle a starting role. Advertisement Marshall Jr. brings size, athleticism, and a competitive edge to the cornerback room. While he may not be a high draft investment, his presence adds another layer of competition for Smith, who must show consistency and reliability to earn the trust of the coaching staff. General Manager Chris Grier has made it clear that Smith is on notice: 'He's got to stay healthy and be on the field. He has shown some flashes, but this is a very big year. He knows what's expected because we can't hold his hand and wait for him anymore'. The Dolphins' secondary is crowded, with veterans like Artie Burns and young players such as Storm Duck and Ethan Bonner also vying for snaps. If Smith falters, Marshall Jr. could quickly climb the depth chart and carve out a significant role by midseason. The Dolphins' approach to the 2025 offseason has created a culture of accountability and competition. Veterans like Liam Eichenberg, Alexander Mattison, and Cam Smith now face direct challenges from a talented rookie class determined to make an immediate impact. For these veterans, training camp and preseason will be make-or-break, adapt and compete, or risk being left behind as Miami reshapes its roster for a playoff push. Ex-NFL QB wants Dolphins to trade for rookie Browns passer

The post Ex-NFL QB wants Dolphins to trade for rookie Browns passer appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Miami Dolphins have unexpectedly entered the NFL rumor mill thanks to a bold idea floated by former Green Bay Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert. In a recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Benkert suggested the Dolphins should consider trading for Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel. He cited the team's strong interest in Gabriel during the 2025 NFL Draft and implied Miami viewed him as a strong scheme fit before Cleveland selected him. Advertisement 'I wouldn't be shocked to see the #Dolphins trade for #Browns QB Dillon Gabriel at the end of preseason. They liked him a ton and saw him as an incredible scheme fit with athletic upside and were going to take him a few picks later, but then the Browns drafted him (per source). The Dolphins traded that pick away after Gabriel was no longer available' The quarterback situation in South Beach has shifted rapidly. The Dolphins drafted Quinn Ewers in the seventh round (231st overall), but their reported interest in Gabriel goes back to April. According to Benkert's suggestion, Miami had targeted Gabriel as a strong scheme fit before the Browns drafted him, and they eventually pivoted to Ewers instead. With Tua Tagovailoa's injury history, the team has to be looking at a Plan B behind their starter—one that fits their system without disruption. Meanwhile, Cleveland also selected Shedeur Sanders, adding more depth—and more uncertainty—to their own quarterback room. Unlike Sanders, who throws right-handed and may require system adjustments, Gabriel could step in without changing the structure of the playbook. Meanwhile, Zach Wilson, currently slotted as QB2, spent most of his 2024 as a backup for the Denver Broncos. A move for Gabriel could add stability to a vulnerable depth chart. From the Browns' perspective, the idea isn't entirely far-fetched. Cleveland selected the Oregon product in the third round but may face tough decisions behind an injured Deshaun Watson, who is recovering from Achilles surgery. If Gabriel underwhelms in camp, the Browns could look to flip him for value—fueling Dolphins trade rumors just weeks before the regular season. Advertisement While Benkert has limited NFL experience, he's built a large platform through his quarterback analysis and Madden content. Whether the Dolphins seriously pursue the move or not, the idea of trading for Gabriel shows how deeply Miami is evaluating every option to bolster their quarterback room. With Tagovailoa's injury history and the offense built for a lefty, the thought of pairing two southpaws might not be as far-fetched as it seems. New Photo Emerges of Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift After Unexpected Public Appearance

New Photo Emerges of Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift After Unexpected Public Appearance originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are in the building for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals, as the Florida Panthers look to defend home ice and take a commanding 3-1 series lead against the Edmonton Oilers. Kelce and Swift's relationship first became public in September 2023, months after her Eras Tour stop in Kansas City. Speculations started abounding when Swift was seen in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium, watching the Chiefs take on the Chicago Bears alongside Kelce's mother, Donna. Since then, the pop star has become a regular at Chiefs home games, and the couple has also attended other major sporting events last year, including the U.S. Open in September and a New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians game in October. Following the Chiefs' loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl and the conclusion of "The Eras Tour," the two have kept a relatively low profile. That changed on Thursday night, when the couple drew cameras at Amerant Bank Arena. A new photo surfaced of them at their seats enjoying the Stanley Cup matchup. Meanwhile, with Kelce enjoying the offseason and Swift coming off an almost two-year tour, it makes sense that the duo made an appearance to add to the growing list of athletic events they've been attending together. Each appearance has drawn national media attention, with broadcasters and networks incorporating their attendance into event coverage. While fans came to cheer on the Cats in hopes of moving one step closer to the cup, the celebrity couple is difficult to ignore in every building they walk through. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
