Ireland 'quite confident' key forward Aoife Wafer will make Rugby World Cup

Ireland's coaching staff remains 'quite confident' that key forward Aoife Wafer will be fit in time to feature in their upcoming Rugby World Cup campaign. The 22-year old was superb for her country in the Six Nations this year, and was named player of the tournament for her efforts, but knee problems have put paid to her pre-season and she will not make the two warm-up games. Ireland play Scotland in Cork's Virgin Media Park this Saturday and then Canada in Belfast seven days later. The question is if their dynamic back row is good to go at some point of a global tournament that starts later in the month. 'We're quite confident that she will play some part of the World Cup, which is really pleasing,' said scrum coach Denis Fogarty. At the moment she's tracking really well. It's just making sure it's right for her as a player, when she comes back into it.' Wafer has already had a procedure and it is felt unlikely that she will see action in the earlier portion of the tournament. Ireland open on August 24th against Japan, play Spain a week later and then reigning champions New Zealand in completing their pool stage. 'She's got a procedure done, so she's definitely not ruled out of the World Cup yet,' said Fogarty to another question, 'but we're taking it week by week in terms of when her return to play is, but she's not ruled out of the World Cup anyway.' Head coach Scott Bemand is already working with two other key forwards in Dorothy Wall and Erin King. Ireland have improved immeasurably in the last 12 months but they can ill afford the loss of players of that calibre. The squad for the World Cup will be named on Monday, August 11th, two days after they face the Canadians at Affidea Park.

Ireland's Wafer 'definitely not' out of World Cup

Ireland are "quite confident" injured back row Aoife Wafer will "play some part" in the Women's Rugby World Cup, says scrum coach Denis Fogarty.2025 Women's Six Nations Player of the Championship Wafer - who will join Harlequins from Leinster after the World Cup - emerged as a doubt for the tournament earlier this month after undergoing knee 22-year-old flanker is set to miss Ireland's warm-up games against Scotland on Saturday and Canada on 9 August, while it is unclear if she will regain fitness in time for the Pool C opener against Japan on 24 August. Ireland also face Spain on 31 August and holders New Zealand on 7 September in their pool. "She's got a procedure done so she's definitely not ruled out of the World Cup yet," said Fogarty."We're taking it week by week in terms of when her return to play is, but she's not ruled out of the World Cup anyway." When pressed if Wafer is in a race against time to recover in time for the tournament in England, Fogarty responded: "No, we're quite confident that she will play some part in the World Cup, which is really, really pleasing."At the moment she's tracking really well. It's just making sure it's right for her when she comes back into it."Ireland have been hit by injury setbacks in the build-up to the World Cup, with forwards Erin King and Dorothy Wall having been ruled out of the tournament. "There's no doubt about it, losing three key players like that has been difficult," added Fogarty."But that's the nature of the game. We've had Sam [Monaghan] coming back in, which is a big addition for us and there's been other girls coming through which have impressed us throughout the camp."Injuries like that, they're always going to come. They're not ideal going into a World Cup but it's something we have to deal with and adapt with and that's what we've done over the last couple of weeks."

BACK on deck Down Under. My car's in Paris, my body's in Brisbane, heaven knows where the head is at. Denis Fogarty is here, along with Quinny. They'll straighten me up. There are recce's to plan with the Melbourne Storm and (hopefully) the Broncos to further broaden coaching horizons, but at this moment, I've only enough bandwidth for the next 24 hours and the first test at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Ireland assistant coach rubbishes prevailing narrative around Women's Six Nations finale vs Scotland

IRELAND coach Denis Fogarty has rubbished claims that Saturday's Women's Six Nations clash with Scotland is a dead rubber — but ruled out a highlight moment. The Girls in Green are third in the table and only a heavy defeat to the struggling Scots combined with a big Italian win over last-place Wales will see them drop a place. 2 The team's results have improved markedly over the past 12 months 2 22-year-old Aoife Wafer has been one of the best players across the entire tournament And Fogarty insists the team will not be jaded after The former Munster hooker said: 'They're not exhausted. They're energised by making sure we finish on a high. 'We know it's always very tricky over in Scotland, we're very much aware of that, but it's also pressure on us to make sure we managed the week really well.' Loosehead prop Niamh O'Dowd (shoulder) is fit for the Scots showdown but the game comes too soon in her recovery for winger Béibhinn Parsons (broken leg). Read More On Irish Sport Fogarty was forced to dye his hair blonde after last year's Six Nations after making a bet with the team that he would do so should they finish third — which they did. But the scrum coach revealed there will be no bleach this year. He laughed: 'I am not bleaching my hair again! I have made absolutely no promises whatsoever. 'It took me four months to grow it out. I am glad we came third but the bleaching was enough.' Most read in Rugby Union Ronan O'Gara bizarrely ends press conference after 23 SECONDS amid La Rochelle's continued poor form
