Summer Flame ignites with a boilover stakes win at Scone
When was the last time Chris Waller trained a feature race winner at odds of $61? This was a question many were asking after Waller's filly Summer Flame scored a huge upset in the Listed $200,000 Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone on Saturday. The champion trainer's runners are usually near the top of betting in stakes races but Summer Flame got under everyone's guard – well, almost everyone. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Waller's stable representative Charlie Duckworth revealed the trainer had been quietly confident on race morning about Summer Flame's chances. 'I was walking in from the track (Rosehill) with Chris this morning and he was actually tipping the filly,' Duckworth said. 'I guess it is hard to work out where that Melbourne form lines up here but she's always shown promise. 'She came up from Melbourne where she performed well in all three starts last preparation and although it was obviously a big step up to Listed grade, she has taken that in her stride.' Summer Flame, ridden by Jeff Penza, scored the biggest upset win of the Scone two-day carnival, when she was given the run of the race, saving ground near the rails and holding on to win by a neck from the fast-finishing $4.60 equal favourites Gerringong and Thames, who had a half neck separating them on the line. • Stakes success for filly on her way to Stardom The Denise's Joy Stakes produced another remarkably close finish with less than a length covering the top six finishers. Penza, one of the NSW racing's most experienced jockeys and the winner of more than 2300 races, rides primarily on the provincial and country circuit but answered an SOS from Waller to ride trackwork Saturday morning and then travel to Scone for two rides including Summer Flame for the stable. 'Jeff rode four horses work for us this morning then went home to ride his two showjumpers before he travelled here to Scone,' Duckworth said. 'He's a hard worker who helps out whenever we ask him so it's great to reward him with this win.' Penza said he wanted to ride a conservative race on Summer Flame, as instructed, but the filly jumped well from barrier three and virtually put herself into the race. 'In this class of race, we expected her to get back and I was just going to hold her together,' Penza said. • Munce hails 'great supporter' as colt continues surge 'But she jumped so well and got into a lovely rhythm. The further we went the better she travelled. 'Coming to the turn she was on the bit looking for somewhere to go. We got the run through on straightening and away she went. She fought hard and was very good on the line.' Duckworth said he was unsure of immediate plans for Summer Flame but the filly has almost certainly added her name to Waller's Brisbane carnival team. Meanwhile, Waller's top mare Joliestar is due to barrier trial at Canterbury on Monday in preparation for the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 31. But with wet weather forecast in Sydney, the trials could be in some doubt which will mean Waller will need to come up with an alternative plan for the brilliant mare. 'If the trials don't go ahead Monday, we could either jump her out on Tuesday or there are Rosehill trials on Friday,' Duckworth said.

Trainer David Payne eager to avoid the top guns with promising filly Shohisha in the Denise's Joy Stakes
Trainer David Payne saw no sense in chasing the top guns throughout the autumn and is ready to reload with promising filly Shohisha in Saturday's Listed $200,000 Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone. Shohisha, a winner of two of her five starts, went for a short break after finishing fifth in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes back in February. It was a race that won by boom filly Lady Shenandoah with 2024 Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot and subsequent stakes winners Lilac and Lazzura all finishing around her. 'I thought why are we chasing our tail with those top fillies, we can't beat them,' Payne said. 'So we thought we'd rather give her a spell and give her a crack out of season. 'Her form looks good now. 'If she shapes up, we can have a look at those Group races for fillies up in Queensland.' Shohisha is set to be one of the leading chances in the Denise's Joy with Tom Sherry booked to ride. Shohisha bobs the head at the right time to beat the favourite and win Race 1 for @DPayneRacing at Warwick Farm! ðŸ'° — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 21, 2024 Payne has given her a tick off trial and the Rosehill conditioner expects it will have Shohisha ready to fire first-up from a break. 'She could have won that tick over trial if she had to,' Payne said. 'I was very happy with that trial so she is going really well.' Payne will have runners on both cards of the two-day carnival with unraced gelding Cosmonaut set to debut in the $200,000 Inglis Challenge (1100m) on Friday. Cosmonaut is a son of Cosmic Force and was a modest $17,000 purchase at last year's Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale. He has been given three trials over two preparation to tune up for his first start, finishing 4th in his most recent hit out over 1050m at Rosehill Gardens. 'It's good money, I don't know if he is good enough for it at this stage but you have to take a chance,' Payne said. 'We will see how he goes and assess him afterwards. 'It wasn't a bad trial. I don't think it's the hardest field so we will run him there and see how he goes.'

2025 Denise's Joy Stakes: Peter Robl saddles up Overfull
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Peter Robl once made the Scone's two-day carnival his own in the saddle, now he's back again to steal another share of the loot as a trainer. The former Group 1-winning hoop was in the twilight of his riding career in 2013 when rode a four-timer – then half the card – with four stakes winners across the Saturday program. Robl had a day to remember as he captured the Denise's Joy Stakes on Diamond Earth, Luskin Star Stakes on Fontelina, Woodlands Stakes aboard Tweet as well as the Dark Jewel Classic on Arctic Flight. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! On Saturday, he will return to Scone to try to win the Listed $200,000 Denise's Joy Stakes (1100m) for the second time, this time on the other side of the fence. Robl will saddle up talented filly Overfull in the three-year-old fillies feature. Scone has already proven to be a happy hunting ground for Overfull, which saluted at the same two-day carnival last year with victory in Friday's $200,000 Inglis Challenge (1100m). 'She has come up terrific,' Robl said. 'I think she has trialled up really well on tracks that aren't really suitable to her. 'She doesn't really like a wet track. 'This prep she is a lot stronger than she was last prep and while she hasn't grown much, she has certainly strengthened up.' • 'I was scrapping': King Zephyr showing former trainer fun side of racing Overfull has won both of her trials in the lead up to her return from a break and will be ridden on Saturday by Damien Thornton. Robl had the option of keeping Overfull in Queensland for the Listed Bright Shadow (1110m) at Doomben but instead elected to head south from his Gold Coast base. 'Those four- and five-year-old mares that are Benchmark 95 horses – Scone compared to Brisbane, she is running against her own age and not taking on those tougher mares,' he said. 'The weather looks better for her and while it's a solid race at Scone, I think she is going to be more competitive on her preparations.'
