Nordstrom Rack Beefs Up Loyalty Program
PERKING UP: Recognizing that consumers are hungrier than ever for bigger bargains, Nordstrom Rack, the off-price division of Nordstrom Inc., is beefing up its loyalty program on June 3. 'We're excited to give our customers more reasons to shop with us through instant discounts, special promotions and early access to new arrivals and sales,' said Deniz Anders, executive vice president and chief marketing officer. 'These new benefits offer our customers more value and perks, and we can't wait for them to have additional ways to earn rewards when shopping their favorite brands at Nordstrom Rack.' More from WWD Les Deux Scores With Sporty, Preppy Menswear and Yale Collab How the Nordstroms Negotiated Their Way to a Retail Buyout Merz b. Schwanen Is Proving to Be More Than Just a T-shirt Brand The enhanced program offers Rack customers immediate discounts, including an instant 5 percent off every purchase (except with a gift card) when using their Nordstrom credit card at Nordstrom Rack stores, on or on the Nordstrom Rack app. There is no spending threshold to receive the discount and customers can see their total savings on their receipt. Previously, cardholders at Rack would receive two to three points per dollar which would be a 2 to 3 percent value back in a Nordstrom note that could be used on future purchases. Under the new benefit, the 5 percent discount is a richer offer and provides immediate savings on each purchase, Nordstrom said. While points will no longer be earned on Rack purchases, points can still be earned at Nordstrom department stores and on Nordstrom Visa purchases made outside of Nordstrom, and customers can continue to redeem their Nordstrom Notes at both Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. When customers use their Nordstrom Visa credit card, they'll earn two points per dollar when shopping select categories like groceries, gas, dining and streaming services. Customers will continue to earn one point per dollar on general retail, travel and everyday expenses when they use their Nordstrom Visa card. 'We've heard from customers they want the opportunity to earn notes faster by earning more points on their everyday categories outside Nordstrom,' the Seattle-based Nordstrom said. Among the other benefits, Nordy Club members will receive seasonal offers from Rack, including surprise discount codes and exclusive deals on brands, and a surprise birthday perk in the Rack app. Members will also have the option to receive app notifications to shop new in-store arrivals before anyone else, and will continue to receive early access to sales, including 'Clear the Rack' and other events. For the past couple of years, the Rack has been undergoing changes and improving its performance, including a rebranding, focusing on offering discounts on brands that are most popular at the Nordstrom department stores, and steadily opening new Rack stores. Nordstrom Rack banner net sales in the fourth quarter increased 1.2 percent, and comparable sales rose 3.5 percent compared with a year earlier. Full-year Nordstrom Rack comparable sales increased 4.7 percent. Nordstrom makes change sure to anger customers
Remember when loyalty programs actually felt like a two-way street? You were loyal to a business and in return, they rewarded you with perks and freebies. Well, loyalty programs aren't what they used to be. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Take Starbucks. When it launched its Rewards program in 2008, it offered customers a free beverage after 12 visits. Then, they changed the system to reward customers based on the amount they purchased. Over the years, Starbucks has slowly increased the amount customers have to spend to access a treat. There is still a loyalty incentive, but it's not as great as it used to be. Obviously, programs evolve, but it seems like businesses are increasingly changing the terms to favor them rather than the ... loyal customer. One brand that still does loyalty well is Sephora. You shop, they keep track of how much you spend, and based on your purchase history you get access to special sales and trial-size treats. Members also receive a fun birthday gift every year. I'm a rewards member at another similar skincare company but I have no idea what the ostensible rewards are because the company doesn't make the program easy to understand. All that is to say ... I am very loyal to Sephora. Image source: Shutterstock Nordstrom, a brand renowned for its customer service, had a rewards program for years before launching what it called its first "loyalty program" in 2018. The focus of "The Nordy Club" is personalization. Nordstrom encourages customers to create profiles on the store's loyalty app. Then, with each purchase, customers accumulate points that gradually unlock personalized experiences, like gaining access to a Nordstrom stylist and even having that stylist make house calls. Other Nordy Club experiences include invites to fashion shows and sale previews, free alterations, and same-day delivery. Of course, there is the most popular reward: Nordstrom Notes, i.e., coupons, that customers can use to shave dollars off of their purchases. Related: As many department stores close, this chain adds new locations For years, customers have been able to accumulate Nordy Club rewards at both Nordstrom and its discount branches, Nordstrom Rack and "final clearance" stores called Last Chance. This week Nordstrom revealed that Nordstrom Rack or Last Chance purchases will no longer count toward The Nordy Club benefits. Instead, the company now has a separate rewards program for Rack customers, giving them a 5% discount when they use a Nordstrom credit card on eligible purchases. The goal is to provide instant discounts, special promotions, and early access for Nordstrom Rack shoppers, Deniz Anders, Nordstrom's executive vice president and chief marketing officer, told Retail Dive. The Nordy Club benefit may also be a victim of its own success. Last year Fortune reported members of The Nordy Club were accumulating so many loyalty points that it was impacting the clothing retailer's bottom line. And yet per an earnings call from the same period, leadership shared that purchases made by these loyal customers accounted for around 70% of the company's sales. In the meantime, hoping to capture more budget-conscious shoppers, Nordstrom has been expanding its Nordstrom Rack locations in the last couple of years. Last year, 23 Rack locations opened across the U.S. and this year, there are plans for 21 more.
