'Den of Thieves 2' hits Netflix: Action sequel starring Gerard Butler surges in popularity despite mixed reviews
Gerard Butler returns as grizzled lawman Nick O'Brien in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, now streaming on Netflix. The action-packed sequel follows O'Brien as he heads to Europe to track down criminal mastermind Donnie Wilson, played by O'Shea Jackson Jr. The new chapter sees the pair caught in a high-stakes diamond heist set in the picturesque city of Nice, France. While critics have offered mixed reviews, giving the film a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes, audience feedback has been far more positive, with a 79% rating on the Popcornmeter. Charles Bramesco of The Guardian awarded it four stars, calling it 'another brash yet hugely entertaining 'Heat'-aping thriller.' Brian Tallerico of described it as 'a heist procedural, granular with details, elevated by a pair of charismatic leading men in one of the most beautiful places in the world.' The sequel, directed by Christian Gudegast, builds on the gritty intensity of the 2018 original while offering a lighter tone and expanded international setting. Butler's character, now facing a personal crisis after a divorce and forced leave from the LAPD, infiltrates Donnie's crew in a bid to redeem himself and take down the gang from the inside. The chemistry between Butler and Jackson Jr. remains a highlight, with their onscreen tension and reluctant camaraderie driving much of the film's appeal. The film also stars Evin Ahmad, Salvatore Esposito, and Fortunato Cerlino, adding depth to the ensemble cast. Following the success of Den of Thieves 2, the franchise is already moving forward with a third instalment. A post from the official X account in January confirmed Den of Thieves 3 is in development, with Jackson Jr. expressing his commitment to continuing the series.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera gets a March 2025 release date for Netflix
Having come out on the big screens earlier on January 10, 2025, has already received a streaming release date on Netflix. The Christian Gudegast-helmed flick serves as a sequel to 2018's Den of Thieves and follows the journey of Gerard Butler's Big Nick. He chases the professional criminal Donnie to Europe after the latter inadvertently involves himself with diamond robbers as well as the perilous Panther mafia. However, things soon take a turn for the worse when Nick learns of an impending heist at the world's largest diamond exchange. Netflix has issued a March 20, 2025, streaming release date for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera in the United States. Fans of the franchise can rejoice as the sequel will be arriving on the streaming giant next month. (via What's on Netflix) The action-thriller sequel performed reasonably well at the box office, amassing over $55 million on a $40 million budget. However, Den of Thieves 2 garnered a much colder response on the critical front, which likely explains the early release date for its Netflix premiere. ComingSoon's Jonathan Sim gave the film an underwhelming rating of 4 out of 10, criticizing the sequel's inconsistency, poor use of supporting characters, and sluggish pacing, among other aspects. Sim summarized his review of the movie by stating, 'The negatives outweigh the positive aspects making it a struggle to get through.' Despite the lukewarm reactions to Den of Thieves 2, there are already talks about a potential threequel. Furthermore, Den of Thieves 3 has entered the initial stages of development, albeit without a confirmed release schedule. Den of Thieves 2, whose streaming release date is on March 20, features Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. in leading roles. The additional cast includes the likes of Evin Ahmad, Salvatore Esposito, Orli Shuka, Stéphane Coulon, and Cristian Solimeno, among others. O'Shea Jackson Jr. wants 'Den of Thieves' to be the next 'Fast & Furious' franchise
O'Shea Jackson Jr. is still coming to terms with the fact that Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was a box-office hit. So naturally he's ready for a third installment. "This is my first No. 1 since Straight Outta Compton," Jackson Jr. told Yahoo Entertainment. (The actor played his dad, Ice Cube, in the 2015 biopic.) "It was an emotional moment because it's been a 10-year career for me, so to have a No. 1 again was amazing." Jackson stars opposite Gerard Butler in the heist films. The 33-year-old actor said he's forever grateful to Butler and director Christian Gudegast for believing in him when he was cast in Den of Thieves in 2018. "After I did Straight Outta Compton, I didn't get work for a year. Critics [said], 'Of course he could play his dad.' So for a year I didn't get work and it bothered me," he said. "But Christian and Gerard, they gave me a shot. Those dudes, they are my guys. I take those types of things to heart and I'm grateful for them. Whenever they need me, let's do it." Less than three weeks after the sequel hit theaters, Den of Thieves 3 was announced. We have an idea of what's to come in the next installment, Jackson said. "Christian is thinking of expensive stuff," he laughed, but promised fans that the next movie won't take seven years to make. "We're still in the process of figuring everything out. We've been having phone conversations with Christian to make it right and a lot quicker than we made the second one so everybody can relax!" One of Jackson's favorite parts of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was the dynamic shift between his character and Butler's, and how the two got to lean into the "buddy action" vibe. "We knew that we had to get that chemistry together," he said. While that didn't involve a wild night clubbing like in the second film, he said he and Butler had a fun two days while filming in the Canary Islands. Jackson said he picked Butler's brain about the entertainment industry and got "the same advice that my dad gave me." "[He said] just to really take care of me," he explained. "It's very similar to what my dad tells me — never do a movie that you wouldn't go see yourself and always be prepared to say no. ... [Gerard pays] such attention to audience details." Jackson said he put a lot of pressure on himself after Straight Outta Compton. "I was so scared shooting Straight Outta Compton because I had thought my life was going to go in a different direction. I was [studying] screenwriting at USC. I had these plans that I set out to do... I didn't practice [acting] enough in my mind to go this route," he said. "I was thinking if I have one bad movie, it's over." When the film came out in 2015, it broke records and was a critical and commercial success. Many expected that it would be one of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and many thought it had been snubbed. (The film was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.) "Ten movies every year get nominated for Best Picture, it's like, 'This year we're gonna do [eight],'" he joked. Although the actor still finds it "crazy," there are no hard feelings. "We were fine being the people's champions." Looking back on making Straight Outta Compton, Jackson's confidence as an actor grew. "Every project after that, I just wanted to keep my head down, not make waves and show that I can do great work. Show up on time, be ready. And now when I look back on the things that I've done and the career that I've laid out and where we're headed now, I feel like I had nothing to worry about back then, but anxiety keeps you on your toes," he said. "What I really want to do is work." Jackson hopes Den of Thieves is the next Fast and Furious-type franchise. "I keep telling Gerard, I'm a big fan of Fast and Furious, I'm gonna use you until you're 90, bro," he laughed. "We're gonna do this forever." is on streaming platforms now.

Den of Thieves 3 in Development, Returning Cast & Director Announced
is a go at Lionsgate. The first Den of Thieves movie was released in 2018. It was followed by the 2025 sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Christian Gudegast directed both films, which see Gerard Butler play Detective Nick 'Big Nick' O'Brien and O'Shea Jackson Jr. portray Donnie Wilson. Following the recent box office success of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Lionsgate, Tucker Tooley Entertainment, and G-BASE have announced that Den of Thieves 3 is now in active development. Gerard Butler is expected to return as Big Nick in Den of Thieves 3. He's also expected to produce the movie through his G-Base banner alongside his G-BASE banner. O'Shea Jackson Jr. is also expected to return, while Gudegest is in talks with Lionsgate to write and produce the film. Tucker Tooley Entertainment will co-produce and jointly finance Den of Thieves 3. A release date has not yet been set. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera hit theaters on January 10, 2025. It has grossed approximately $47.5 million at the worldwide box office. Speaking to ComingSoon about Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Gudegast said, 'The long form of the story was sort of mapped out from the beginning. When researching Den 1, we came across so much material that we couldn't jam it into one movie. It's almost like we have material for several seasons of a show. Then we knew we'd sort of sparse it out over the course of several films. So, you know, we were trying to build a franchise from the very beginning based on very elaborate, fascinating heists all over the world.' Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is now available on digital, while it will arrive on 4K UHD and standard Blu-ray (with DVD/digital copies) on March 4, 2025. The first movie is currently streaming on Max, TNT, TBS, and TruTV.
