Did an angry Denzel Washington leave Cannes Film Festival early after spat with paparazzi? Actor's rep breaks silence

Actor Denzel Washington got into a public spat with a photographer on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week. The Oscar winner, who was at Cannes for his new film Highest 2 Lowest, was captured on video giving a verbal lashing to one paparazzo in particular. Curiously, Denzel flew out of the French Riviera hours after that, sparking speculations that he had done so after being miffed at the exchange. The actor's representative has now addressed those rumours. As he walked the red carpet, he started exchanging words with one of the many photographers lined up there. Videos from the event show that Denzel walked up to the photographer, pointed his finger in his face, and appeared to reprimand him. Denzel was not present at the film's press conference the following day, having flown back to the US overnight. This led to speculation about his night being ruined by the altercation. However, in a statement, the actor's rep has denied it, saying the actor was 'always scheduled to be in and out of Cannes on Monday,' as it was his only day off from his Othello run on Broadway. 'The studio and festival were aware weeks ago, ahead of time, that he would not be available for the press conference today due to his work commitment on the play,' his rep told Us Weekly. Earlier, during his heated exchange on the red carpet, the photographer tried to lighten up the mood by grabbing the Oscar winner's arm, but this only worsened the issue. "Stop it, stop it, stop it," Denzel repeated as he flung the man's hand off his arm and walked away, as per the outlet. 'Don't put your hands on me again,' he was heard saying to the shutterbug. Before this incident, Denzel was busy interacting with his co-star A$AP Rocky. While director Spike Lee started his conversation with the rapper, the actor's attention was turned towards the camerapersons.

Source: Courtesy / Boardroom Today (May 20th) on Boardroom, legendary director and writer Spike Lee sat for the latest Billboard Cover Story. n the exclusive interview, the proud New Yorker and cinephile discusses his relationship with Michael Jordan, his experience working with A24, his love for the New York Knicks, what makes going to the theaters so special, casting A$AP Rocky opposite Denzel Washington in his upcoming movie Highest 2 Lowest , and much more. Continue reading to check out the full conversation! If there's one thing we know, it's that Spike Lee is always tapped in. Like everyone else in the world, the legendary filmmaker was a huge fan of the movie that has taken the world by storm this year, Sinners . Speaking on it, the 69 year-old said, 'I haven't seen a film like this in years. I was jumping up and down, like I'm courtside at the garden and we're kicking the Celtic's ass.' Although show business is oftentimes competitive, Lee made it clear that 2025 is the year of Black cinema. 'This is the year of black cinema! There is such love that Denzel and I have for Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan.' said Lee. 'It's love and affirmation where you want people to be the best they can be. There ain't no competition. There's room for everybody to thrive. For you to thrive doesn't mean you're hating on anyone else.' Speaking of Denzel Washington, Spike had high praises for his dear friend and frequent collaborator. As he discussed working with one of the greatest of all-time, he explained, 'There's different levels of greatness. And anytime Denzel is in front of the camera, he is going to put the work in. It's a blessing that Denzel and I got to work together – the dynamic duo! D n' Lee!' The dynamic duo's upcoming film (their fifth together) Highest 2 Lowest is scheduled to be released on August 22nd. Starring opposite of Washington is rapper A$AP Rocky. Spike Lee gave some insight on why he chose the Harlem native for the role. 'Denzel is a beast. When you see a championship fight, you want to see someone who is going to test him. In a movie, if you had two characters go head to head, you gotta cast someone who is gonna hold his ground with Denzel. And ASAP's from Harlem. They go toe to toe.' As one of the biggest New York Knick fans known to man, Spike knows a little about going to to toe. When Rich Kleiman asked him if the the late '60s/early '70s era of the Knicks was his favorite, he gave a heartwarming response. 'Yes. And the late Dick Barnett just passed. I knew all these guys. The late great Willis Reed. I love these guys. Every time I see John Starks I hug him.' The two-time Academy Award winner touched on these and so many other topics in the almost half hour interview. Denzel Washington confronts photographer at Cannes amid red carpet tension

The actor, 70, was captured on video pointing directly at the individual and saying 'Stop it!' after appearing visibly irritated by being tapped on the arm while posing for photos alongside co-star A$AP Rocky. Though the man appeared to shrug off the moment with a smile, Washington made it clear he did not appreciate the unsolicited contact. The clip quickly spread on social media, where fans rallied in support of the double Oscar winner. 'Idk what happened but I know Denzel is in the right,' wrote one user on X, while another added: 'The dude was touching him. I guarantee that's why he was pissed, I would be too. Good man.' A third commented: 'I don't get that stuff. These folks are around people all day, every day grabbing at them and asking them for stuff. Not a life I'd ever want, I see stuff like how Denzel reacted and I give him a total pass.' 'You can clearly see Denzel say 'do not put your hands on me' and then the guy does it again. What a clown,' a fourth claimed. Despite the flash of tension, the evening went on to deliver a major surprise. Washington, in Cannes for just one day—his only break from a New York stage run of Othello—was honoured with an unannounced lifetime achievement Palme d'Or, presented by longtime collaborator and Highest 2 Lowest director Spike Lee. 'This is my brother, right here,' Lee said on stage, as he handed the award to a visibly moved Washington. 'This is a total surprise for me!' the actor replied, holding the Palme as the audience applauded. The film, which was absent from the official Cannes schedule until the last minute, is a modern retelling of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 crime thriller High and Low. Backed by Apple and A24, the project will arrive in cinemas on August 22 before streaming on Apple TV+ from September 5.
