Retired consultant, software firm staffer lose over Rs90 lakh in share-trading frauds

Pune: A retired company consultant based in the Sinhagad Road area on Wednesday evening lodged a complaint with the Pune cyber police, stating that online fraudsters cheated him of Rs57 lakh between April and June, promising him handsome returns on investment in online share-trading. According to the complaint, the victim's phone number was added to a messaging application group. Its members discussed high returns from trading shares online and praised the group admin for sharing valuable tips. Inspector Sangeeta Deokar of the Cyber police said, "After reading the messages, the victim was impressed with the group admin, and contacted the latter. The group admin told him to download a share trading application — a manipulative screen software in reality." The group admin contacted him and told him to buy high-value shares for higher profits. The group admin then promised to help him out in buying high-value shares and IPOs." The police said the group admin shared details of five bank accounts with the retired consultant, and the latter transferred Rs57 lakh to these bank accounts. "After transferring money to the fraudsters, the screen software showed good profit to the victim. He tried to sell some shares, but the fraudsters did not allow him to do so. The retired consultant then realised that he was cheated," she said. In another incident, a man (40) from Dhayari, off Sinhagad Road, lodged a complaint with the Nanded City police, stating that online fraudsters cheated him out of Rs33.46 lakh by promising him handsome returns on investment in online shares. The complainant, an employee of a software company, exhausted all his savings between June 4 and July 22 in a similar fashion after his phone number was added to a messaging application group. Suryakant Deokar, assistant health officer, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), who issued these notices, said, "The municipal corporation inspects private hospitals twice a year. There are about 850 hospitals and clinics, both small and big, in the city. Notices were sent to three hospitals last week and eight this week." The hospitals in which the PMC has sent notices on Monday are in Aundh, Kasba Peth, Ghole Road and Kothrud. Deokar said, "Action is taken against hospital administrations under the Bombay Nursing Home Act. The PMC's health department inspects private hospitals at an interval of six months to ensure that these facilities comply with the norms under the acts. The health hubs are mainly checked for compliance with fire safety norms, and display of patients' rights boards and charges boards at a visible location. The hospitals are also required to display the 24x7 toll-free number given for patients to raise complaints. A source said that PMC has issued notices to the eight private hospitals on Monday after its officials found that the fire safety norms were not in place and the boards that are supposed to display charges were not visible.

HC denies pre-arrest bail to doctor accused of molesting juniors, says must consider victims' trauma

Mumbai, The Bombay High Court has denied pre-arrest bail to a senior doctor of the civic-run KEM Hospital, accused of molesting six women junior doctors, noting that it must consider the "emotional and psychological trauma" caused to the victims. The high court on May 8 rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Ravindra Deokar, additional professor in the department of forensic medicine at KEM Hospital. The victims, working as assistant professors of the hospital, have alleged that Deokar harassed them by touching them inappropriately and passing offensive comments. A bench of Justice Rajesh Patil said Deokar had been behaving inappropriately for a long time, taking advantage of his influential post. The court noted that until now, no one was ready to file a complaint against the senior doctor, as they were traumatised and feared that their career would be affected. If Deokar is granted anticipatory bail, there is every likelihood he would take revenge against all the complainant victims, and there is also a high chance that he would repeat the same act, the bench said. "Eventually, one has to consider the emotional and psychological harm caused to the victims who are pursuing their medical courses, and considering the safety in a workplace like a hospital, and to morally and legally protect women's dignity, the present pre-arrest bail application requires to be rejected," the court stated. A case has been registered against Deokar with the Bhoiwada police station. In his plea, Deokar, who was suspended after the case was registered, said the complaint against him was a result of a personal grudge and internal hospital politics. The court, in its order, noted that Deokar was also a member of the hospital's internal committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act. "This is a case where the allegations are against a doctor who is a member of the POSH committee of inappropriate behaviour with female doctors, by not one, but six persons," it said. This is also not the first time such a complaint has been raised against Deokar, the court remarked, noting that a woman doctor had also filed a similar complaint in 2021. Justice Patil noted that Deokar has been suspended and not terminated. "Therefore, if he succeeds in the proceedings initiated against him for suspension, there is likelihood that he will come back to the hospital and resume his duty," the court said. The court further said apart from doctors, even medical students are now approaching the police to lodge complaints against Deokar for inappropriate behaviour.
