Sekhukhune raid Orlando again to stun Pirates
The Buccaneers lose at home to Babina Noko for the second time this year. Sekhukhune United won at Orlando Stadium for the second time this year on Saturday, spoiling Orlando Pirates' first Betway Premiership game under Abdeslam Ouaddou with a 1-0 win. Eric Tinkler's Sekhukhune had won by the same scoreline at the end of April, as Pirates' title challenge faded into obscurity. Babina Noko needed a little luck on Saturday, the woodwork twice saving the away side. But they were also good value for their three points in a display of high-energy pressing football. It was Siphesihle Mkhize who grabbed the vital goal just after the break, as Pirates failed to capitalise on Sundowns' draw with Chippa earlier in the day. Sekhukhune got off to a good start in Orlando and veteran striker Bradley Grobler might have scored as early as the third minute. ALSO READ: Cardoso laments Sundowns' lack of intensity in Chippa stalemate Tsepo Masimibi's low cross picked out the 37 year-old at the near post but he could kick thin air. The ball then fell for Vuyo Letlaba, who fired just wide. Woodwork denies Pirates In the 11th minute, Deon Hotto burst onto a fine long ball down the left for from Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Hotto's cross evaded Boitumelo Radiopane but was turned onto his own post by Babina Noko defender Daniel Cardoso. Keletso Makgalwa had the most assists in the Premiership last season. And he nearly opened his account in the 17th minute, his cross finding Grobler, who took one touch and lashed an effort over the bar. Sipho Mbule has had a composed start to life in a Pirates shirt. And he tested Sekhukhune goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner with a long-range shot that had to be tipped over the bar. In the 39th minute, Patrick Maswanganyi skipped inside onto his left foot but his shot from just outside the box had no real pace on it and was easy for Leaner. On the stroke of half time, Relbohile Mofokeng jinked inside in typically silky fashion, but his effort flew just wide of the post. Pirates had a good chance to take the lead right at the start of the second half too. Deon Hotto skipped past a couple of challenges and set up Boitumelo Radiopane inside the area. The young Pirates striker's first touch was poor, however, and Cardoso intervened. Sekhukhune strike And the Buccaneers paid the price as Sekhukhune went in front in the 48th minute. Pirates failed to take several chances to clear the ball amid some ping pong in their own penalty area. And it all ended with Mkhize beating Sipho Chaine at his near post, the Pirates keeper not able to get to the ball before it had cross the line. Pirates tried for an immediate response, and Oswin Appolis' cross had to be palmed away by Leaner. Eventually Ouaddou did go to his substitutes bench, bringing on Abdoulaye Mariko and Yanela Mbuthuma on just before the hour mark for Mbule and Radiopane. Increasingly desperate The Buccaneers, however, seemed to get increasingly desperate, illustrated by two horribly wayward shots from distance from Mariko and Tshepo Mashiloane. ALSO READ: Stubborn Chippa hold Sundowns in season opener Pirates did come within inches of equalising in the 76th minute. Hotto's free kick found the head of Mbokazi and his effort beat Leaner but came back off the post. In the 81st minute, Maswanganyi hit a better long-range effort for Pirates, but his shot flew just over.

From Hanamub to Hotto: Top-performing foreign players in 2024/2025 PSL season
NAMIBIAN Riaan Hanamub of AmaZulu FC is challenged by Ashley du Preez of Kaizer Chiefs during a league match. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix THE pre-season player transfer window comes with performance analysis by numbers as teams look to offload and strengthen their arsenals for the upcoming season. For foreign players, this is usually means a great deal, with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) having foreign-player quotas in place. So, Independent Media looked at the best performing foreign nationals from the PSL's 2024/2025 Premiership season. Boasting names like Peter Shalulile, Riaan Hanamub, Deon Hotto and Elmo Kambindu, it is fair to say that Namibia were yet again the best represented country outside South Africa in the past season. However, not all Namibian players make our top five list of the best performing foreign nationals... Riaan Hanamub (Defender, AmaZulu – Namibia) The 30-year-old left fullback was yet again one of the best, if not the best, in his position in the previous season. His closest competition comes from the Zimbabwean-born Divine Lunga, who plays in the same position for Mamelodi Sundowns. Video Player is loading. Hanuman, though, was a regular for Usuthu, playing no less than 26 league games for the side that had at least three coaching changes. Hanamub was a starter under Pablo Franco Martin, who in October was replaced by Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane as co-coaches. Hanamub continued to hold his own even after Vilakazi left Zwane as the sole head coach with about 10 games remaining to finish the season. The Namibian recorded four assists to his name, proving to be an important cog in the team's attack as well. He remains an anchor for Usuthu, and in January, he was linked with a big move to Kaizer Chiefs. Deon Hotto (Left wing-back, Orlando Pirates – Namibia) Operating tirelessly with pace on the left flank from left back to left wing, Hotto is proving to be one of those age-defying players. At 34, Hotto made 49 appearances for Pirates in all five competitions the Buccaneers participated in. That includes 25 in the league and 14 Champions League games, where he produced six goals and eight assists. He remains clubless after Pirates announced his release at the end of the season. Peter Shalulile (Centre forward, Mamelodi Sundowns – Namibia) Although his impact was way less than the season before, the 31-year-old Shalulile still shone for the Brazilians, scoring crucial goals when needed the most. He made a total of 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals with two assists. Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Second striker, Mamelodi Sundowns – Brazil) By far the best performing player in the PSL for the season, the Brazilian has more numbers on his. Playing 50 games in all competitions, he scored 21 goals and made 14 assists. Ribeiro's influence is with the ball at his feet, as he is able to take on defenders with ease and open up space for his teammates to slot into scoring spaces – if he doesn't score himself. However, the 26-year-old will need to work on his temper as he raked in 12 yellow cards as well.

Orlando Pirates midfield veteran signs new contract
Orlando Pirates have rewarded Makhehleni Makhaula with a new one-year contract to keep him at the club until 2026. 35-year-old midfield enforcer Makhehleni Makhaula will stay with Pirates for another season. He made 44 appearances for the Sea Robbers across all competitions in 2024-2025, making him a virtually indispensable member of the first team. Big changes at Pirates for the senior players Club captain Innocent Maela and veteran midfielder Miguel Timm are both leaving Pirates. There are also whispers that top earner Deon Hotto could be following them out of the exit door. One X user said: 'Do not touch King Hotto,' presumably suggesting that the club would be foolish to release the versatile 34-year-old Deon Hotto. The Namibian is still a dependable player and popular among fans and teammates, and managers, comfortable in several positions and tactical systems. Since joining from Wits in 2020, club stalwart Hotto has notched up over 200 appearances, collecting six trophies. To say he's an underrated performer is a massive understatement.
