Woman arrested after school staff report suspected child abuse
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A woman has been arrested after staff at a local charter school suspected a child may have been abused and alerted authorities.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), staff members at the school contacted police around 10:35 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, with their concerns. Officers responded to conduct an initial investigation, and the Crimes Against Children and Forensic Interview Units then responded.
CSPD said detectives established probable cause to arrest 29-year-old Lizbeth Salinas Mijangos for felony child abuse.
The Department of Human Services responded to the home on South Chelton Road to ensure the safety of children in the home.
'CSPD would like to express appreciation for the staff members who noticed that something was wrong and who were diligent enough to report it,' CSPD said.
Anyone with concerns for a child's welfare should report suspected child abuse to CSPD at (719) 444-7000, or the Child Abuse Hotline at 844-CO-4-KIDS (844-264-5437).
