100 elite disabled players to feature at World Chess Championship

The 23rd IPCA World Individual Chess Championship 2024 was held in Gyumri, Armenia, last year Panaji: A total of 100 elite chess players from more than 20 countries are expected to take part in the 24th World IPCA (International Physically Disabled Chess Association) Individual Chess Championship in Dona Paula from Monday. The tournament celebrates inclusivity and competitive spirit and has attracted players from Russia, Israel, Poland, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Germany, South Africa, UAE, Sri Lanka, and others Positioned as part of Goa's 'Purple Fest', the championship dovetails with the state's mission to empower persons with disabilities through inclusive platforms. Organisers have described the event as a "unifying and empowering force," championing accessible global sporting excellence. The tournament is jointly organised by the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Govt of Goa, State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Goa Chess Association for Persons with Disabilities, and the Chess Federation for Physically Disabled. Social welfare minister Subhash Phal Dessai is the chairman of the organising committee. Three best federations overall, by ranking medals collected in all categories among men, women, juniors and girls, will receive trophies. For ranking, the number of gold medals will be considered first, and if there is a tie, then the number of silver medals, and if there is still a tie, the number of bronze medals will be added.

MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Tuesday distributed assistive devices to the differently-abled in Madikeri, under the Socially Oriented Civil Scheme of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. Distributing the aids at the Red Cross Bhavan, the MP said that 344 assistive devices worth ₹20 lakh were distributed to 201 differently-abled beneficiaries in the district. Speaking on the occasion, the MP said everyone is dependent in life in one way or the other. The differently-abled should be provided with more opportunities, and the government should distribute necessary assistive devices. Mr. Wadiyar said the differently-abled have also played a role in nation-building, and the government is providing several benefits so that they live like any other citizen. 'For building a strong and ideal society, everyone's contribution is essential. We must extend as much support as possible to the differently-abled in building a responsible society,' he added. Emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India, he said everyone's role is crucial for comprehensive and holistic development under Viksit Bharat. Everyone must contribute towards nation-building, he added. Speaking on the occasion, former Speaker K.G. Bopaiah said the Central government has implemented many schemes to help the differently-abled lead dignified and self-reliant lives. 'By 2047, India must become a developed nation. In this regard, efforts are being made to ensure that the benefits of various programmes reach the last person in society, including the differently-abled,' he added. Tipanna Sirasagi, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Development, said disability is not a curse; it should be overcome. Government facilities should be utilised to take up self-employment and live self-reliantly, he said. Ravindra Rai, president of the Red Cross Society, said the organisation is providing several facilities to the differently-abled and recently distributed raincoats to 25 persons. He urged the MP to support the construction of the top floor of the Red Cross building. District Officer for Differently-abled Welfare Vimal informed that assistive devices were being distributed across taluks due to rain.

Four major initiatives on AI launched

Four major initiatives focused on Artificial intelligence (AI) and accessibility which aim to harness AI for the creation of inclusive digital ecosystems and offer scalable solutions in assistive technology were launched on Friday. At a national conference on AI for Empowering Persons with Disabilities, held in Bengaluru, the four missions [Mission AI accessibility; Mission AI: Implementation of AI in Assistive Technologies and Tools for Empowering People with Disabilities; National Disability Support AI Chatbot, and United Benefits Interface (UBI)] were launched. Rajesh Aggarwal, secretary, Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, said: 'A new era of inclusion has been ushered in by Artificial Intelligence.' His keynote presentation covered advancements in deep learning, robotics, and computer vision, emphasising their potential in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. The conference also showcased how AI can be a force multiplier in creating a more inclusive and accessible India. It also brought together leading experts, government officials, technologists, and advocates to showcase how AI is enhancing accessibility and opportunities for persons with disabilities.
