'Deeply shocked': school community in disbelief after stabbing death of Chinese exchange student
THE DEATH of a Chinese exchange student allegedly at the hands of another at their host family's Lake Macquarie home, has rattled a Hunter school community. The two girls, aged 13 and 14, were on exchange at Newcastle Waldorf School in Glendale through Beijing Depu Cultural Exchange, a Chinese private limited company based in Beijing, which focuses on cultural exchanges between the East and West in education, architecture, and agriculture. The students had been in Australia since last week as part of a tour group. In a joint statement, Newcastle Waldorf School co-principals Peter Muddle and Tracey Ashton said they were deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic incident involving the two visiting Chinese students. "Our priority has been to ensure care and professional support is in place for our school community as well as for the visiting students and their carers who find themselves dealing with grief far away from their families," they said. "We have arranged extra counselling to support everyone through this very difficult time." Mr Muddle and Ms Ashton confirmed the visit was organised through an external tour operator, and the school had agreed to its request for the students to attend and experience classes. "The tragedy occurred at a residence where both students were billeted," they said. "Although the host family is not connected with our school, we are thinking of them as they too, must cope with this ordeal. "Our thoughts and compassion are with the students, their families, and everyone affected at this time." Emergency services were called to an Edgeworth home just before 10.30pm on Monday. Early investigations indicate the two girls and the couple hosting them had retired to separate bedrooms for the night when the woman hosting heard a commotion. When she entered the 14-year-old girl's bedroom, she found her with one stab wound to her torso, police said. NSW Ambulance paramedics worked to save the child's life, rushing her to the hospital in a critical condition, where she later died. Police arrested a 13-year-old girl at the scene, and she was taken to Toronto police station. Officers also seized a kitchen knife for forensic examination. Detectives charged the girl with murder late on Tuesday night. At Broadmeadow Children's Court on Wednesday, the 13-year-old made no application for release on bail, and it was formally refused. Newcastle Waldorf School in Glendale offers a human-centred education based on Steiner principles. Depu, the Chinese company that placed the students in Newcastle, has an educational approach rooted in Waldorf education and 'Nature Pedagogy'. Depu was founded in 2012 in Beijing by Amerigo Sivelli, and originally focused on cultural exchange programs such as professional tours abroad and training. The Newcastle Herald has contacted Mr Sivelli for comment. The company organises travel for children and teenagers to "expose them to different cultures and languages". In Mandarin, "Depu" means the cultivation of virtuous seedlings. "Some of the targeted benefits are the inspiration to help shape their lives or the stewardship to form their worldview," Depu's website said. "The world is a stunning place, and experiencing it as a young person can trigger a more cultured, compassionate, and balanced personality." Today's Kaizer Chiefs news wrap has a hot take from Mike Makaab on the club's new signing. Meanwhile, Angolan star Depu is still a target. 'Masterchef' signs for Orlando Pirates Kaizer Chiefs sign Durban-born playmaker Chislett Chiefs have wrapped up a two-year deal for South African-born Ethan Chislett. The attacking midfielder can operate in several roles behind the striker and wore the number 10 for Port Vale, who were recently relegated to League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Agent Mike Makaab is a huge fan of his work, praising Chislett for his ability and knack for seeing a pass and scoring goals. ADVERTISEMENT Senior figure Maart signs new terms 29-year-old Yusuf Maart will stay on at Chiefs and play a vital role in their midfield, according to local reports from @UnplayableZA on X. Since arriving from Sekhukhune in July 2022, Maart has been a near ever-present in the Amakhosi engine room. Last season, he made 27 appearances in the league. Dodgy deal for Kaizer Chiefs? 25-year-old Angolan striker Laurindo Dilson Maria Aurélio, commonly known as Depú, got zero goals and one assist in 24 league games in Serbia last season. Not the most mind-blowing record. He did, however, excel for Angola in a recent Cosafa Cup match against Bafana. Kaizer Chiefs eye intriguing deal for star in Serbia
Kaizer Chiefs have sent their scouting network to Serbia in the hunt for new talent in the striking department. 25-year-old Angolan star Laurindo Dilson Aurelio, aka Depu, is on loan at Serbian side Vojvodina from Portugal's Gil Vicente. The striker has also played club football in Angola with Petro de Luanda. 25-year-old Angolan striker Laurindo Dilson Aurelio has zero goals and one assist in 24 league games in Serbia last season. Not the most mind-blowing record. He did, however, excel for Angola in a recent Cosafa Cup match against Bafana. Four new youngsters in the squad As you'll know by now, Chiefs are heading to the land of Dennis Bergkamp, Virgil van Dijk and Wesley Sneijder for their European pre-season tour adventure. The Glamour Boys jet out on 03 July and conclude the tour on 19 July. It should be a fun fortnight! George Matlou, somewhat surprisingly, will be on the flight. 'Mayele will only come to South Africa for a holiday and Amapiano' At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that has dwindled dramatically. In 27 league appearances last season, he only got four goals and an assist. Click for the story Is Depu worth chasing? Kaizer Chiefs have been questioned for their often baffling recruitment policy, which is very much hit and miss. Kaizer Chiefs news: Duba missing from training, Saleng latest
Wandile Duba was one of four players missing from Kaizer Chiefs' first training session back after the 2024/25 season concluded due to partaking in the COSAFA Cup. The additional talent who didn't feature are Mduduzi Shabalala, Bruce Bvuma and Aden McCarthy. The club granted them additional leave in order to recover properly before boarding the plane to Europe, where they will take on Dutch giants FC Utrecht. Earlier in the month, it was reported that Monnapule Saleng had signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs. However, this seems to be more myth than fact, with neither party confirming the news. AmaKhosi have several attackers in their sights, including Orlando Pirates target Laurindo Depu Aurelio. 'What I can tell you is that both teams had their scouts there. The scouts were all happy with what they saw in Depu and they enquired about him,' a source confirmed. 'Apparently Kaizer Chiefs wanted their defender Inacio Miguel to help them talk to the player and his representatives. And Orlando Pirates also believed to be willing to talk to the player. They have their different reasons but apparently the scouts from both clubs are happy with what they saw.' A second source confirmed the rumour, saying, 'Apparently Chiefs don't want to dwell much on Feisal Salum if the price is still that high and will now consider Depu.' 'But the problem is Depu is now based in Portugal and it could also be another challenge. However it's believed that they want to use Inacio Miguel to bring Depu to Naturena. So let's wait and see.'
