NINE Orlando Pirates players make final Bafana squad

Orlando Pirates are strongly represented in the latest Bafana Bafana squad for friendlies in early June. Nine players are in there. Sipho Chaine, Deano van Rooyen, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Simphiwe Selepe, Thalente Mbatha, Patrick Maswanganyi, Rele Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota are the nine selected. Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa were in the preliminary group but didn't make the final cut. Latest Pirates transfer rumours Orlando Pirates have taken to X to say farewell to former Marumo Gallants midfielder Miguel Timm. The 33-year-old has become a bit-part player in the Bucs engine room. Thalente Mbatha and Makhehlene Makhaula are the preferred duo, while even attacking midfielder Kabelo Dlamini has been used in a more withdrawn role ahead of Timm. Orlando Pirates fans are expectant on Soweto Derby Day. It was Maela's swansong appearance after which he got a standing ovation and sendoff by the home fans. Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring for the Buccaneers in the 7th minute, and Zimbabwean veteran Edmore Chirambare equalised for the visitors on 32 minutes. Orlando Pirates identify Spanish boss to replace Riveiro?

Orlando Pirates are keeping things Iberian in their search for a new head coach. Is this the man to replace Jose Riveiro? 'There have been talks between Pablo Franco Martin and Orlando Pirates,' an inside source revealed. 'An offer has been made, but he is not the only coach the club is looking at, and there are other candidates. He is very interested in the Pirates job, and he has since parted ways with the club he was coaching in Saudi Arabia, despite being made an offer to increase his salary to renew his contract.' According to Soccer-Laduma , Orlando Pirates will soon seal a deal for Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi. The same publication sounds less optimistic about their chances of snapping up Bafana winger Oswin Appollis. The 23-year-old reportedly has his heart set on Kaizer Chiefs. Is this a blessing in disguise for the Buccaneers? Click for the latest Orlando Pirates fans are expectant on Soweto Derby Day. Image: BackpagePix Would you like to see Martin take the job? Hibs striker Lia Tweedie to leave the Club this summer.

Hibs striker Lia Tweedie will leave the Club this summer. The 27-year-old amassed 124 appearances and scored 47 goals in Green and White across two spells. Tweedie joined the Hibs Girls Academy aged 11 in 2009. At 16 years old, she scored on her senior debut in a 9-1 victory over Buchan on 18 May 2014. After a brief spell away from Leith, the forward returned to Hibernian Women in August 2022. Over two stints at Hibs, the forward won seven trophies in total – including two Scottish Cups and four Scottish League Cups. The striker has netted a number of hat-tricks in Hibs colours, including in key victories over Rangers, Motherwell and Forfar Farmington, and reached a century of appearances for the Club in April 2023. Tweedie was also fond of a crucial Derby Day goal against Hearts, with none more memorable than her unforgettable long-range volley during the 2023/24 campaign – which was subsequently voted as the Club's Goal of the Season. She leaves on a high after earning a first league winners' medal with the Club – with the forward coming on as a late substitute at Ibrox as Hibs defeated Rangers to secure the SWPL title. On Lia's departure, Hibs Women head coach Grant Scott said: 'I want to thank Lia for her outstanding contribution to Hibernian. She is a great person who has deservedly picked up plenty of winners' medals with the Club. 'From coming through the Hibs Academy to performing on the European stage and winning silverware, Lia has always remained a fantastic servant to this Club and will be a big loss to the group – both on and off the pitch. 'I wish Lia the best of luck with what comes next for her in her career.' A Club spokesperson said: 'Everybody at Hibernian FC wishes all the best to Lia and thank her for all her contributions throughout her time at the Club.' Like this: Like Related

Damysus and Nightwalker pass muster in Epsom gallop

The pair were last seen finishing runner-up and fifth in the Dante Stakes at York – a race Gosden senior won with Benny The Dip and Golden Horn before landing the premier Classic. Thady Gosden said: 'It's a great thing to do with them when it's quiet, relaxed and not overly stressful. 'It's a very unique track which is impossible to emulate anywhere and just for them to get a feel for it and perhaps get them a few strides quicker in the race can only be a positive thing. 'They both handled it very well. They're very intelligent horses, the pair of them, really taking it in. You could see Damysus (James Doyle) pricking his ears coming to the line. 'They're slightly different types, you would assume, but their first introduction to the place and they've both travelled smoothly through it and when they came to join each other they quicken up nicely over the line.' Of their efforts at York, Gosden said: 'Neither of them had hugely hard races in the Dante, they were both doing their best work late on. 'They're both talented colts, both have a good turn of foot and both travel well in their races. Also, we know it's a big occasion and it's very easy for it to get to them a little bit but just on the evidence here this morning they seem to handle everything very well. 'Of course, with tens of thousands of people here on Derby Day it changes the dynamic slightly, but on the evidence of this morning I couldn't be happier with them.' On the chances of Damysus, Gosden went on: 'James (Doyle) was very happy with him today. He's a horse who's a very laid-back character, but every start this year he's become more alert, woken up and made progress. 'The way he travelled round there this morning, he's done everything James has asked him to do, he's very well balanced and a very together horse and he handled the track great this morning. 'With the Wathnan team we'd earmarked this race for him a while back and planned the route to it which hopefully is going as we'd hoped.' On Nightwalker, who was partnered by Robert Havlin, he added: 'He's always shaped like a horse who would get the mile and a half no problem and of course he's bred to as well, and you'd like to think he'll take another step forward and improve for it. 'He's pretty laid-back. He's obviously a horse that we inherited from Sir Michael Stoute at the end of last year so we were getting to know him early in the year and he really seems to have matured this year.' On which one might hold the best, he said: 'They're both talented colts and I guess we'll have a definitive answer to that in a couple of weeks!'
