Mackerel now a popular fish to catch and eat

Mackerel were, at one time, not on the menu for Scots who preferred staples like cod, haddock or salmon. Many fishmongers in the UK 50 years ago did not stock or display the fish. Fast forward to now and they are an extremely popular fish to eat and to catch. Why? They are considered a healthy fish to eat because they are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids. They are closely related to tuna and are also a source of protein and other essential nutrients. What's more, they are now in the Forth area. Derek Anderson, boss of Aquamarine Charters out of Eyemouth, said anglers on his charters along the Berwickshire coast have landed 'huge' mackerel. Word has gone round and his regular trips on Sagittarius, a Blyth Workboat 33 catamaran, are popular with anglers from as far afield as Glasgow and Newcastle and, of course, the Lothians. He does half-day, full-day and evening trips. Leanne Taylor of Forth Sea Safaris based at Burntisland is now regularly dropping a line from her boat to monitor the situation. As yet, mackerel have not arrived around Burntisland, but you can book your spot on her wide-decked Pathfinder boat for a two-hour trip out of the Fife harbour. The trips are set to start in July, but, if the mackerel arrive then dates may change. Both charter bosses state that 7ft rods are required. Equipment can be hired. Further afield, anglers on the MV Rachel May off the North-East Coast are catching mackerel. The boat is run by Gordon Morrison and anglers on Misty Angling trips from Fraserburgh Harbour can also catch codling, haddock, ling and dab. Fishing note. Mackerel are normally easy to catch, just ask two young girls who were on the Misty trip recently. They using several feathers on a line with a weight and simply dropped that over the side of a boat. Bingo. They went home with a carrier bag full. Feathers can also be cast from a harbour or jetty and the fish also responds to a wide range of lures which are available in local tackle shops. Rory McIlroy handed 5 apologies from PGA Tour rival's caddie after golf incident

Derek Anderson caddied for PGA Tour pro Kevin Chappell at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where he was up against Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry on the opening two days Former NFL quarterback Derek Anderson - now a caddy on the PGA Tour - had to sheepishly apologise to Rory McIlroy not once, but five times at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. It came after Anderson inadvertently distracted the golfing ace during his shot. Anderson is best known for an impressive 14-year stint in the NFL with teams including the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers. But he was also celebrated as one of the league's keenest golfers during his time. His affinity with the sport led to friendly connections with numerous golf greats, resulting in his first-ever caddie role this April. ‌ At 41, Anderson found himself assisting Kevin Chappell alongside partner Tom Hoge in the pairs' event, where they competed against Shane Lowry and a freshly-crowned 2025 Masters champion, McIlroy, for the first two rounds. But Anderson's inexperience shone through embarrassingly when he caused a stir with the Northern Irishman. ‌ Reminiscing about the gaffe on GOLF's Subpar podcast, Anderson remarked humorously, "Oh yeah, that was great. "I felt 5'1" tall. Kevin hit that shot on 17 on Friday. Shane missed the hosel by an inch. I kind of walked back and I'm kind of not really sure where to go, because the flag was over there and Shane's chipping. "I was like, 'I just want to go put this bag down, get my guy's putter. Let's get this over with.' So I go behind the green and Rory's chipping from the front-right of the green, right back at me. "Michael Collins says something to me and I look down [to the side], I don't even know what he was saying and all of a sudden I hear Chappie (Chappell) yell from 40 yards away, 'DA, stop moving!' "I was like, 'Oh s***.' I grabbed the bag and went right behind the camera guy and I just stood there and I froze. I thought, 'Oh my God, I don't even know what to do, what am I doing, there's all these people here.' Kinda freaking out. ‌ "Meanwhile, Rory had stepped off the chip. Apparently, when I looked down I bothered him. And then he steps up and proceeds to lay sod over it, and I'm like 'Oh, no.' And then they made a bogey. "As we were walking off, I tapped him with the putter like, 'I'm so sorry dude.' Going up 18, I'm just staying as far away from him as I could. I apologised to him like five times." Anderson, who is a scratch golfer himself, shared how Lowry jokingly shouted across the green: "It took you two days and you finally screwed it up!". Anderson began his NFL career with the Ravens in 2005 before moving to the Browns. His journey continued through Arizona and led him on a seven-season stint with the Panthers before he retired in Buffalo. In 2017, ESPN reported that Anderson had aspirations to compete in the Masters by winning the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Meanwhile, McIlroy failed to defend his Zurich Classic title alongside Lowry, finishing the tournament T12 and six strokes behind the victorious duo of Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin.

NFL quarterback forced to apologize to Rory McIlroy 'five times' for bizarre New Orleans incident

A strange encounter in New Orleans between Rory McIlroy and Derek Anderson left the former NFL quarterback groveling to the new Masters champion, it has been revealed. The story emerged from Anderson himself after he opened up on his experience caddying for Kevin Chappell at the recent Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Chappell was a late replacement for Billy Horschel, meaning that Anderson suddenly found himself on the bag for Chappell alongside McIlroy in his first tournament since his historic Masters victory. Anderson played the first two rounds alongside McIlroy and his playing partner Shane Lowry, who were also the defending champions of the Louisiana tournament. 'I felt 5-foot-1-inches tall,' Anderson said, reflecting on his error in an appearance on the Subpar podcast. 'I'll set the scene a little bit. Kevin hit that shot on 17 on Friday. Shane missed the hosel by an inch. He's short right. And I kind of like walked back and I'm kind of not really sure where to go, because the flag was over there and Shane's chipping. 'And I kind of just want to go put this bag down, get my guy's putter, let's get this over with. So I go behind the green and Michael Collins (of ESPN) says something to me, and Rory's chipping from the front-right of the green, right back at me. 'Collins says something and I like look down, and I don't even know what he's saying, and all of a sudden I hear from 40 yards away, "DA! Stop moving!"' It was Chappell, calling out to his caddy. Anderson continued: 'I was like "oh s***". I grabbed the bag and went right behind the camera guy and I just stood there and I froze. 'I didn't even know what to do, what am I doing, oh my God, there's all these people here. Kinda freaking out. 'Meanwhile, Rory had stepped off the chip. Apparently, when I looked down I bothered him. And then he steps up and proceeds to lay sod over it, and I'm like, Oh no. And then they make bogey. 'We were walking off, and I tapped McIlroy with the putter like, "I'm so sorry, dude". 'Going up 18, I'm just trying to stay as far away from him as I could the rest of the way. I apologized to him like five times.' Derek Anderson will always remember getting in Rory McIlroy's way at the Zurich because Shane Lowry is never going to let him forget it. The NFL QB turned PGA Tour caddie joined the show to talk about his journey to Kevin Chappell's bag with @ColtKnost and @thesleezyman. — Subpar (@golf_subpar) May 7, 2025 In his time on the football field, Anderson was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens but was waived monthslayer before the Cleveland Browns took him. He also spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills, where he was a mentor and backup to none other than Josh Allen in his rookie season. McIlroy, meanwhile, is gearing up for the second major of the season next week at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. In perhaps an ominous sign for the rest of the field at the US Open, McIlroy has enjoyed four victories across his career at the course.
