Verona man charged with robbery and malicious wounding
A Verona man is being held without bond after being suspected of beating and robbing a victim, according to the Augusta County Sheriff's Office.
On Saturday, May 17, at approximately 9:00 p.m., deputies responded to a reported assault in the 100 block of Bobby's Way in the Fishersville area of Augusta County, resulting in the arrest of 35-year-old Derrick L. Barbour.
According to a press release, deputies determined that Barbour reportedly beat another man with a handgun. The victim sustained serious injuries to his face and head, the release said. Barbour is also accused of robbing the man after allegedly taking a bag from him that contained personal belongings.
The victim was taken to Augusta Health in Fishersville for treatment.
Following an investigation, deputies arrested Barbour during a traffic stop on Lee Highway in Verona on Thursday evening, May 22. He's charged with malicious wounding, robbery with serious injury, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
"This was an isolated incident between two acquaintances," said Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith. 'We have been working diligently to identify and locate Derrick Barbour, and I want to commend our deputies for their swift and professional response in safely bringing him into custody."
This case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Augusta County Sheriff's Office at (540) 245-5333.
