How Derrick White handled being traded to the Boston Celtics
Since joining the Boston Celtics, Derrick White has developed into one of the most reliable guards in the NBA — on both sides of the ball. Not only has White proven himself to be among the best two-way guards in the NBA, but he's also emerged as a vital piece of Joe Mazzulla's rotation. However, before White teamed up with the Celtics and then head coach Ime Udoka, he was learning from Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. White was slowly proving himself on the rebuilding Western Conference roster. However, the front office decided to swap him for Romeo Langford, Josh Richardson, a 2022 first-round draft pick and a 2028 pick swap. During the debut episode of his "White Noise" podcast, White discussed the range of emotions that he navigated after finding out the Spurs had decided to trade him. He also spoke about the acclimation process, both to his new team and a new city. You can watch the full segment by clicking on the embedded video above. What is the best-case scenario for the Boston Celtics next season?
As the Boston Celtics prepare for the new season, they're faced with a genuine question over their ability to compete in the Eastern Conference. With Jaylen Brown and Derrick White in the rotation, Joe Mazzulla's team will be too good to tank and chase a lottery pick. However, with their limited depth, especially in the front court, they won't be anywhere near good enough to contend. When you're in the NBA, the last place you want to find yourself is in the middle of the pack. There's no reward for being mediocre. The bad teams usually get the best picks, and the top teams fight it out for a championship. There's no value to sitting in the middle of the road. Therefore, Brad Stevens and Mazzulla may have some soul-searching to do. According to Jeff Goodman, who was speaking via a recent episode of the "Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman Podcast," Boston's best-case scenario for the upcoming campaign is to bottom out and chase a high draft pick while also retooling the roster and preparing for the 2026-27 season. Derrick White on how he felt about his trade to the Boston Celtics from the Spurs at first
The Boston Celtics are home to point guard Derrick White now, but there was a moment in his NBA career where the move felt like a bit of a slap in the face, even after hearing from the head coach of his tea, the iconic San Antonio Spurs head honcho Gregg Popovich. Coming from a background at the NCAA level where, when he started, it was not even clear he'd make the NBA, never mind excel in it, the Spurs were the team that believed in White and helped mold him into the borderline All-Star he has become today. And the University of Colorado alum had a lot going on at the moment in his personal life, which he related in the first episode of his own podcast, "White Noise podcast with Derrick White". "Getting traded during the season is one of the craziest things I've had to deal with in my NBA career," he explained. "You're on a team, you're committed to them, you're trying to do everything you can to help them win games. And then one day they're like, 'All right, you're on the Celtics.'" "I was hurt," he added. "Definitely, when they traded me ... I think Jakob Poeltl came to my room after I got traded. And I was like, 'Why don't they want me?' That's kind of what it's like—Why don't they believe in me? Why don't they see their future with me there? I was just like, 'Why don't they want me?'" "I was cool with the rebuild… but obviously, getting traded is crazy," continued White. "My wife was seven months pregnant—that makes things even crazier. And I think getting traded to Boston makes it even crazier— The roads make zero sense. You don't know where you're going. Everything's so confusing." Thankfully, we know that the story had a happy ending, with Boston welcoming the Colorado alum, the team letting him spread his wings on the way to a title in 2024. But it had a bit of a rocky start, with infamous articles questioning whether his deal was an overpay, and White himself second-guessing the move. Can we expect a change in play style from the Boston Celtics next season?
Heading into the new NBA season, the Boston Celtics are expected to tweak their play style. Brad Stevens has already discussed the franchise's desire to see the team play at a higher pace with quicker decision-making. Stevens has added multiple young talents to the rotation, likely in the hope that Mazzulla will feel empowered to see the team put the pedal to the floor as often as possible. Of course, when you have Jaylen Brown and Derrick White on your roster, you also need to be comfortable playing in the half-court, which is where Boston has excelled in recent years. Mazzulla's job will be to find a balance between the two approaches and figure out how to blend them together, and what play calls can work out of each situation. During a recent segment on "98.5 The Sports Hub," Coley Mick joined James Stewart to discuss the issues with Boston's play style last season, and the changes we could expect to see, both this season and in the years to come. The two hosts also touched on the stagnation we saw from the Celtics roster as the 2024-25 season wore on. You can watch the full podcast episode by clicking on the embedded video above.
