Ex-Blackburn man Williams joins Reading from MLS
Reading have signed Derrick Williams on a two-year deal from Major League Soccer club Atlanta 32, has spent over four years in the MLS with LA Galaxy, DC United and then Atlanta after he left Blackburn Rovers in Republic of Ireland defender played more than 150 games for Rovers in almost five seasons at Ewood Park, winning promotion from League One as he had done previously with Bristol City."Derrick is a fantastic addition for us," Royals manager Noel Hunt told the club website, external. "He's an experienced professional with a great pedigree, great experience at a higher level, knows what it takes to get promoted from this level as he's done it twice, and has played in another country."

August 15 - Atlanta United transferred defender Derrick Williams to English third-division club Reading FC on Friday. Williams, 32, recorded one goal and two assists in 44 MLS matches (41 starts) with the Five Stripes from 2024-25. "Derrick has been a great teammate and a true professional during his time with the club. This is a great opportunity for him to continue his career and is in the best interest of all parties involved," Atlanta chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson said. He played for D.C. United (2023) and the L.A. Galaxy (2021-22) before joining Atlanta in the 2023 re-entry draft. --Field Level Media

Atlanta (3-7-5) won for the first time since it beat New York City FC 4-3 on March 29. Advertisement Brad Guzan had seven saves for Atlanta. Slisz scored in the 66th minute to give Atlanta a 3-1 lead. Saba Lobjanidze played a corner kick to the back post, where Williams headed back to in front of the net and Slisz tapped the finish inside the front post. Alexey Miranchuk played a ball-in on a free kick the Williams redirected into the net from point-blank range to open the scoring in the 16th minute. Fortune scored on a one-touch finish off a cross played by Lobjanidze that somehow slipped through three defenders to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead in the 20th. Miles Robinson headed home a corner kick played in by Evander in the 48th minute and Gerardo Valenzuela scored on a sliding first-touch finish off a cross by Lukas Engel in the 70th for Cincinnati. Roman Celantano had two saves. Advertisement Cincinnati (9-4-2), which had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped, had 59% possession and outshot Atlanta 27-12, 9-6 on target.
