DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State Fair Board is getting closer to finding a new operator for the open Steer 'N' Stein location. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Board is hosting a special meeting to listen to the following proposals: 1:00 pm — Lucky's on Grand 1:30 pm — Blue Ribbon Bar and Eatery 2:00 pm — Lucky's Hideout 2:30 pm — Kenny's Place 3:00 pm — Lucky Leprechaun 3:30 pm — D Gee's 4:00 pm — Sham Rocks The State Fair received 27 proposals to operate the Steer 'N' Stein space after opting not to welcome back the former ownership group. That begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Administration Building at the fairgrounds. Des Moines Home and Garden Show kicks off final day

DES MOINES, Iowa — The final day of the Des Moines Home and Garden Show is underway at the Iowa Events Center. This is the 47th year of the show which aims to inspire Iowans with new ideas for home projects. One of the vendors this year is Korey Beemer with Beemer Landscaping. He started his company at the Des Moines Home and Garden Show in 2004 with water features. Over the last two decades, he was able to expand, including fire pits and pools. Beemer said the show is a huge benefit to local vendors like him because it accounts for about 35% of his annual sales. Another vendor is Designer Palms, a Kansas-based metal palm tree company that has also attended the show for the last two decades. A representative for the company, Kyle Adams, said the trees can be functional art pieces, as many can be tables, lamps, or showers. According to Adams, the trees are low maintenance and can last around 25 years. Iowa is the state with the most amount of metal palm trees provided by Designer Palms. Some Waukee residents may recognize the metal tree fixture located outside of The Palms Theaters and IMAX; however Adams said a majority of their customers are decorating their backyards. The Des Moines Home and Garden Show will go from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Phill the water buffalo in critical condition after sudden illness

OXFORD, Iowa — The water buffalo who escaped from a Pleasant Hill farm and was shot by police back in August is now fighting for his life. Phill's escape captivated the nation and his recovery has not been easy. After he was recaptured, Phill was surrendered by his owner to the Iowa Farm Sanctuary. He was joined there by two other water buffalos, Sal and Jane, who the same owner also surrendered. New EV charging stations in Iowa halted, drivers face limited options The sanctuary posted Thursday about a quick decline in Phill's condition, saying he 'was found lethargic, unsteady on his feet, and had stopped eating.' Phill was rushed to the Iowa State University Large Animal Hospital in Ames where he was determined to be in critical condition. The ISU veterinary team is working to determine what caused Phill's sickness. The post said they're examining whether the lead bullet that remained in Phill after being shot by police is causing lead toxicity. He's also showing signs of a severe infection that could cause rapid deterioration in his condition. Ultrasounds suggest there could be a gastrointestinal blockage and his rumen isn't functioning normally. According to the Iowa Farm Sanctuary, he is receiving care around the clock and may require surgery on Friday. They plan to post updates on the sanctuary's Facebook page.
