Des Moines police warn against keeping large sums of cash after armed robbery of $60,000

An 18-year-old from Des Moines was arrested and charged in connection with an armed home invasion during which he allegedly took about $60,000 in cash. The Des Moines Police Department began their investigation when an Oak Park neighborhood family reported that four people, one of them armed, entered their home and robbed them of about $60,000 in cash May 1, according to a news release from spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. Detectives learned a teenager who lived in the home posted images of the cash on a social media platform before the robbery, the news release said. The money belonged to the 16-year-old victim's mother, according to court documents. The victim said the suspect, Mohamed Osman Abukar, allegedly entered his home and threatened him with a firearm to get the money. The victim told police Abukar bit his arm, causing injury during a struggle, according to court documents. The 16-year-old said he knew Abukar and was able to identify him. A search warrant was served May 7, leading to the recovery of substantial amount of cash and the arrest Abukar, who was charged with first-degree robbery. Abukar allegedly was found to have a large sum of cash in a coat similar to what he was wearing during the robbery, according to court documents. Police did not say whether the three others allegedly involved in the robbery have been arrested or charged. Parizek warned against keeping such large sums of cash in the home. "While having some cash on hand could be helpful at some point, there is a lot of risk that comes with keeping large sums of cash in your home," he said. "The risk of fire, or theft, and the possibility that your insurance company may not cover a large loss of cash, makes a bank or other financial institution a much safer option." High speed chase through Des Moines ends with suspect in custody

DES MOINES, Iowa— Police say a high-speed chase through the streets of Des Moines on Friday ended with a suspect wanted on a felony warrant in custody. 'I saw a lot of lights behind me on Fleur, so I took it on the right side,' said Tito Hunter. 'And zoom past me- I would say at least 15 vehicles.' Those vehicles were made up of Des Moines Police and Iowa State Patrol Troopers who were in pursuit of a Blue Chevrolet Avalanche with a white male behind the wheel. Hunter was on his way home from work and shared video he took of the incident with WHO-13. He said he believed it may have started after a traffic stop around 3:30 Friday afternoon. The suspect allegedly refused to surrender and raced his speeding pick-up across the city from MLK Jr. Parkway, past the airport, and eventually off the road in Warren County. 'I was in my living room and I felt the whole house shake,' Grant Sodders told reporter Katie Kaplan. 'I thought it was a semi speeding.' Sodders shared his own video of what appeared to be the same vehicle as it sped by his home on Bell Avenue. At least three police cruisers trailed quickly behind. He estimated the vehicle was traveling at least 50 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone and said the Spring Break holiday was the only reason Bell Avenue was not more crowded with traffic. 'Usually, the school busses are running around that time too, but thankfully, Des Moines has been out of school for Spring Break,' Sodders said. 'So, while he was tearing down that street, you know, no one else was in any more danger.' A third video taken by Brian Green showed the Chevy cross into oncoming lanes with officers not far behind. 'Oh my Gosh! I have never seen that happen in real life before,' he can be heard yelling in the background. Green, who works for The Tree Service, LLC, told WHO-13 he was heading to a job site when he noticed the truck speeding toward him. It was just a few yards away when it crossed the median behind his own truck. The chase eventually extended into Warren County where the suspect allegedly ran off the road near the Echo Valley Golf Course. The extent of damage to the course was not immediately known. Police said they were working with the business on determining a damage estimate. WHO-13 reached out to the course for a statement but has not yet heard back. The suspect was eventually taken into custody around 4:30p.m. east of Norwalk. His identity was not immediately released, but the man had a felony warrant out for his arrest and police were still working on the case reports late into Friday night, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek. The agency expected to have more information available Saturday morning. While it was a shocking experience to encounter the pursuit, Hunter said he was impressed by the police response. 'I appreciate how they reacted. That gave you reassurance for, you know, how your local police will be responding when you need them,' he said. 'I hope he's not going to get out anytime soon.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Grimes man arrested with 17 charges in Cedar Rapids following stolen dog investigation

A Grimes man has been arrested in Cedar Rapids on 17 counts following an investigation into the shooting and stealing of a dog that ended in a standoff with police. Christopher Kern, 49, was arrested in Cedar Rapids Thursday after an 11-hour standoff. A warrant for his arrest was produced on the shooting of his dog and stealing it from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa Tuesday. Des Moines Police began an investigation of gunfire in the Watrous South neighborhood on the south side of Des Moines on Jan. 31, where they found a dog had been shot. The dog was taken to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa for care. The dog had a bullet removed from its leg and was treated for a fracture in the wrist area, a release from the ARL said Friday. The dog continued to recover in the care of the ARL but was stolen Feb. 18, according to a news release from Des Moines Police. Evidence pointed to Kern as the suspect, but police couldn't fine him and warrants for his arrest were requested, police said. At that time, Kern was also the subject of a petition for relief of elder abuse, according to court fillings. He had also been subject to a warrant for his arrest after not showing up to a scheduled court date in January related to drug possession charges. Kern was reported to be in Cedar Rapids Wednesday, according to the release. Cedar Rapids Police located Kern after receiving a tip that he was staying at The Chelsea, 525 Valor Way S.W., an apartment building in Cedar Rapids behind the Cedar Rapids Police Department. Kern opened fire at the officers who attempted to arrest him, who fired back, according to court filings. Kern continued for "several hours" to "hinder the execution of lawful duties" of Cedar Rapids Police by refusing to exit the apartment despite negotiation attempts, court filings say. KCRG reported the standoff lasted nearly 11 hours. Eventually, the door to the apartment was "blown open" and a robot was used to locate Kern, who was hiding beneath the covers of a bed in a bedroom. He was arrested and found to have three guns in his possession, including an AR-15, a 9-mm Taurus handgun and a 32-caliber revolver, police said. Kern was arrested on multiple charges including: Three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer. Three counts of possessing firearms as a felon. Three counts of interference of official acts with a dangerous weapon. Three counts of assault on persons engaged in certain occupations. Two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon. Use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime. Going armed with intent. Persons ineligible to carry dangerous weapons. Kern is being held at the Linn County Jail. Glen Laxamana, 45, reportedly denied that Kern was inside his apartment at The Chelsea when officers initially made contact. He was later arrested and charged with interfering with official acts and being an accessory of a felony after the fact. The dog, which has now been named Dionysus by ARL staff, was rescued in Cedar Rapids and was returned the the ARL Thursday. He was "limping but in good spirits," the release from the ARL said. He is undergoing further medical treatment at the ARL. Kyle Werner is a reporter for the Register.
