Sergiño Dest the latest USMNT star who'll miss the Gold Cup
When Zack Steffen left the U.S. men's national team's pre-Gold Cup camp on Wednesday because of a knee injury, it seemed the American roster for the regional championship was set. The veteran goalkeeper's departure reduced Mauricio Pochettino's team to 26 players — the same number in the final squad U.S. Soccer was required to submit to Concacaf later in the day. Apparently not. On Thursday morning, the USMNT announced that 24-year-old star right back Sergino Dest — a 2022 World Cup starter who has already played for elite European teams Ajax, Barcelona, AC Milan and current club PSV Eindhoven — will also miss the tournament, which the Americans kick off next weekend against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose, California. Dest returned to the field for PSV in March after missing almost a year with a torn ACL. He appeared in seven matches, five of them starts, and went all 90 minutes in the Eredivise finale on May 18. In a statement, Pochettino said Dest's health would be best served by sitting out the Gold Cup. He was replaced by left back John Tolkin. "The technical, medical and high performance staff have done a series of evaluations this week on all the players in camp, and in the case of Sergiño we determined the best decision is for the player to have an individualized training program for the summer so he can focus on being fully recovered and ready to perform next season," Pochettino said. Dest joins a laundry list of U.S. regulars who are out this summer. Christian Pulisic, exhausted after playing 100 competitive games for Milan over the last two seasons and with an eye on the all-important 2026 World Cup, asked for and was granted a break. Antonee Robinson just underwent knee surgery. Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah are participating in the Club World Cup instead. First choice strikers Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi are hurt. Given Dest's long absence — he hasn't played for his country since March 2024 — seeing him in action under Pochettino for the first time was supposed to be one of the few remaining silver linings this summer. On Tuesday, Matt Turner raved about the importance of having Dest back in camp. "Serg is awesome," Turner said. "He's such a fun guy, a fun teammate to play with. It's great to see him out playing again. In tranining he's looking good. His feet are as good as ever. "He definitely seems to have matured through this injury," Turner added. "I'm just super happy to have him back and involved with the team." Now that reunion is on hold for at least another few months. The final Gold Cup squad is as follows. Teams can replace an injured player up to 24 hours before their opening match. Goalkeepers: Matt Freese, New York City FC (MLS); Patrick Schulte, Columbus Crew (MLS); Matt Turner, Crystal Palace (England) Defenders: Max Arfsten, Columbus; Alex Freeman, Orlando (MLS); Nathan Harriel, Philadelphia Union (MLS); Mark McKenzie, Toulouse (France); Tim Ream, Charlotte (MLS); Chris Richards, Crystal Palace; Miles Robinson, Cincinnati (MLS); John Tolkin, Holstein Kiel (Germany); Walker Zimmerman, Nashville (MLS) Midfielders: Brenden Aaronson, Leeds (England); Tyler Adams, Bournemouth (England): Sebastian Berhalter, Vancouver (MLS); Johnny Cardoso, Real Betis (Spain); Luca de la Torre, San Diego (MLS); Diego Luna, Real Salt Lake (MLS); Jack McGlynn, Houston Dynamo (MLS); Quinn Sullivan, Philadelphia Union (MLS); Malik Tillman, PSV Forwards: Paxten Aaronson, Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany); Patrick Agyemang, Charlotte (MLS); Damion Downs, Cologne (Germany); Brian White, Vancouver; Haji Wright, Coventry (England) Doug McIntyre is a soccer reporter for FOX Sports who has covered United States men's and women's national teams at FIFA World Cups on five continents. PSV seizes control of Dutch title race thanks to USMNT stars, Ajax collapse
PSV's Eredivisie title defense received a massive boost in dramatic fashion on Wednesday. United States internationals Malik Tillman and Sergiño Dest played leading roles in a dominant PSV showing at home against Heracles Almelo, with the club winning 4-1 in the season's penultimate match. Tillman opened the scoring in the 18th minute before making it a double with a stellar long-range finish in the 40th, while he contributed an assist as well. Dest assisted on the other goal, his first goal contribution since returning from an ACL injury in early March. Advertisement Just as vital was a result roughly 260 kilometers north of Eindhoven, as 10-man FC Groningen stunned Ajax — which entered the day atop the standings — with an equalizer in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time. Ajax, which had topped the league table since overtaking PSV on February 16 and once led the title race by nine points, has now seen its months-long lead fully expire following the 2-2 draw, with PSV now leading by a point. PSV, which hit the 100-goal plateau in league play on Wednesday, has notched a far healthier goal differential than Ajax, with a +62 margin dwarfing their rivals' +33, Ajax had claimed command over the standings, though, in part thanks to winning both head-to-head battles: first at home in November before stunning PSV with a 2-0 win in Eindhoven on March 30. However, Ajax has stumbled down the stretch, taking just one point from its three most recent matches entering Wednesday. It was briefly given a shock when Groningen equalized in the 52nd minute Wednesday, but former Manchester Untied loanee Wout Weghorst re-established Ajax's lead in the 68th minute. The result seemed safe in the third minute of stoppage time, as Groningen midfielder Luciano Valente was sent off for a challenge on England international Jordan Henderson. The extra time as Valente exited and Henderson received treatment led to a dramatic and potentially decisive moment in the title race, though, as the blocked shot from a well-worked set piece fell to Thijmen Blokzijl for a stunning equalizer. As it stands, a win from PSV on the final day will be enough to thwart Ajax's hopes of returning to the top of the Netherlands' pecking order. Crazily enough, Ajax entered the day able to clinch the title, if it had won while PSV lost, and the Eredivisie trophy was present at its match in case that scenario unfolded. That may be the closest the club gets to that silverware this season, with PSV now in command of its title destiny. Advertisement Arguably no team in Europe's top leagues is impacted more by Americans than PSV, with the 22-year-old Tillman and 24-year-old Dest joined by 22-year-old USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi, who saw his season end in late January due to a knee injury. U.S.-eligible right back Richy Ledezma, 24, is also part of the club, whose sporting director since 2023 has been former U.S. striker Earnie Stewart. Tillman's brace brought him into a tie for second among PSV's goalscorers, with his 11 strikes in league play trailing Luuk de Jong's 13. Pepi also bagged 11 league goals before his abrupt end to the season, while Tillman added three and Pepi two to PSV's Champions League campaign. Tillman's league goal tally also marks a single-season career best, which was previously 10 (on loan with Rangers in 2022-23) 20/10 – 22-year-old Malik Tillman (20 goals, 12 assists) is one of two players under 23 years old to record 20 goals and 10 assists over the last two Eredivisie seasons (Johan Bakayoko). Promising. — OptaJack⚽️ (@OptaJack) May 14, 2025 All games in the Eredivisie's final matchday kick off concurrently on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Both remaining title hopefuls will have their matches streamed stateside on ESPN+, with PSV visiting 11th-ranked Sparta Rotterdam while Ajax will host 6th-ranked FC Twente. Both are already assured places in the 2025-26 Champions League league phase, as the Eredivisie now enjoys two automatic berths in the field as part of the competition's recent restructuring.

USMNT defender Sergiño Dest makes return from ACL injury with PSV
US men's national team defender Sergiño Dest has returned from knee surgery after more than 10 months out of action. The 24-year-old entered in the 67th minute for PSV Eindhoven against Heerenveen in the Eredivisie on Saturday, coming on in place of fellow American Richy Ledesma. 'Of course I have to take it easy and be careful, but it felt good,' Dest told the club website afterward. Dest's return could be especially well-timed for the US national team, which will announce its squad for the upcoming Nations League finals on Tuesday. The two-game tournament will be the last major competition that will involve all of the team's first-choice players until the 2026 World Cup. The US is set to play Panama in the semi-final on 20 March, with Mexico and Canada playing in the other semi-final that same day. The final and third place game will be on 23 March. Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion If Dest is named to the US squad and plays in the Nations League finals, it will mark almost exactly a year since his last international appearance, which came in the 2024 Nations League final victory over Mexico. His ACL injury meant that Dest missed the 2024 Copa América in which the US was eliminated in the group stage, which resulted in the dismissal of head coach Gregg Berhalter. A call-up would represent Dest's first time in camp with Berhalter's replacement, Mauricio Pochettino. Dest was loaned from Barcelona to PSV in August 2023 and agreed to a four-year contract with PSV last June. The outside back scored two goals in 25 league matches and 37 overall games before tearing an ACL in training on 20 April, an injury that needed surgery. He has two goals in 33 international appearances and started all four US matches at the 2022 World Cup. PSV beat Heerenveen 2-1 and is now second in the Dutch top tier behind leader Ajax.
