PSV seizes control of Dutch title race thanks to USMNT stars, Ajax collapse

New York Times14-05-2025

PSV's Eredivisie title defense received a massive boost in dramatic fashion on Wednesday.
United States internationals Malik Tillman and Sergiño Dest played leading roles in a dominant PSV showing at home against Heracles Almelo, with the club winning 4-1 in the season's penultimate match. Tillman opened the scoring in the 18th minute before making it a double with a stellar long-range finish in the 40th, while he contributed an assist as well. Dest assisted on the other goal, his first goal contribution since returning from an ACL injury in early March.

Just as vital was a result roughly 260 kilometers north of Eindhoven, as 10-man FC Groningen stunned Ajax — which entered the day atop the standings — with an equalizer in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time. Ajax, which had topped the league table since overtaking PSV on February 16 and once led the title race by nine points, has now seen its months-long lead fully expire following the 2-2 draw, with PSV now leading by a point.
PSV, which hit the 100-goal plateau in league play on Wednesday, has notched a far healthier goal differential than Ajax, with a +62 margin dwarfing their rivals' +33, Ajax had claimed command over the standings, though, in part thanks to winning both head-to-head battles: first at home in November before stunning PSV with a 2-0 win in Eindhoven on March 30.
However, Ajax has stumbled down the stretch, taking just one point from its three most recent matches entering Wednesday. It was briefly given a shock when Groningen equalized in the 52nd minute Wednesday, but former Manchester Untied loanee Wout Weghorst re-established Ajax's lead in the 68th minute. The result seemed safe in the third minute of stoppage time, as Groningen midfielder Luciano Valente was sent off for a challenge on England international Jordan Henderson.
The extra time as Valente exited and Henderson received treatment led to a dramatic and potentially decisive moment in the title race, though, as the blocked shot from a well-worked set piece fell to Thijmen Blokzijl for a stunning equalizer. As it stands, a win from PSV on the final day will be enough to thwart Ajax's hopes of returning to the top of the Netherlands' pecking order. Crazily enough, Ajax entered the day able to clinch the title, if it had won while PSV lost, and the Eredivisie trophy was present at its match in case that scenario unfolded. That may be the closest the club gets to that silverware this season, with PSV now in command of its title destiny.

Arguably no team in Europe's top leagues is impacted more by Americans than PSV, with the 22-year-old Tillman and 24-year-old Dest joined by 22-year-old USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi, who saw his season end in late January due to a knee injury. U.S.-eligible right back Richy Ledezma, 24, is also part of the club, whose sporting director since 2023 has been former U.S. striker Earnie Stewart.
Tillman's brace brought him into a tie for second among PSV's goalscorers, with his 11 strikes in league play trailing Luuk de Jong's 13. Pepi also bagged 11 league goals before his abrupt end to the season, while Tillman added three and Pepi two to PSV's Champions League campaign. Tillman's league goal tally also marks a single-season career best, which was previously 10 (on loan with Rangers in 2022-23)

All games in the Eredivisie's final matchday kick off concurrently on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Both remaining title hopefuls will have their matches streamed stateside on ESPN+, with PSV visiting 11th-ranked Sparta Rotterdam while Ajax will host 6th-ranked FC Twente. Both are already assured places in the 2025-26 Champions League league phase, as the Eredivisie now enjoys two automatic berths in the field as part of the competition's recent restructuring.

2025 USA Diving American Cup held at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Thirty-nine competitors across six countries came to Morgantown on Thursday to kick off the 2025 USA Diving American Cup at Mylan Park, where the best divers compete for spots in other international meets later in the year. Among the competitors are 16 Americans, eight female and eight male, who represent some of the best divers in the United States. The 2025 American Cup will have four days of competitions, and officially kicked off Thursday. The events on Thursday and Friday are preliminary competitions, where the athletes aim to make the finals, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday. During the finals, the top 12 competitors will face off for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place positions, and from there, they'll look to move on to some other international competitions or national competitions for their respective home countries. According to National Events Manager Michael Retcher, the Morgantown Aquatic Center has been home to many USA Diving national meets over the past few years, adding that the hospitality they've experienced there has been incredible. 'This is a world-class facility, truly, that is well-known amongst our athletes and the diving community,' he said. Power Up 2025 Conference looks to help small businesses in Morgantown Retcher also said that Visit Mountaineer Country and Peak Health Aquatic Center have been great partners with USA Diving, which is why the organization keeps coming back to hold competitions in Morgantown. 'The people, the experience here that we've had at our national-level events is awesome,' he said. 'Now we're showing the world on the international stage how awesome Morgantown, West Virginia, is and what a great job they do.' According to Retcher, international meets like this one can provide the first opportunity, and at other times additional opportunities, to get experience on the international stage. He also said that although there are U.S. athletes competing at this event, competitors in this international cup are trying to get experience to compete in the World Aquatics Championships and hopefully secure a spot in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. USA Diving wants to pack the stands throughout the duration of the 2025 USA Diving American Cup, and they encourage people in the Greater Morgantown Area to stop by. 'You don't have to know a thing about diving, you don't have to have ever seen diving before,' Retcher added. 'But it is so much fun to be here—to be up close and personal watching these divers, and it's just really an electric event.' Tickets for the event can be purchased online via Mylan Park's website. There, you can find a full event schedule for the coming days and also find information about volunteer opportunities. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rams reportedly sign veteran OL D.J. Humphries

Rams reportedly sign veteran OL D.J. Humphries The Los Angeles Rams added another depth piece to their offensive line Thursday after veteran offensive lineman D.J. Humphries reportedly signed with the Rams, his agency announced. Terms of the deal were not immediately available. Humphries, 32, most recently played two games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 following eight years with the Arizona Cardinals. He was an eight-year start for Arizona and made the Prow Bowl in 2021. Injuries have befallen Humphries recently. He tore his ACL at the end of the 2023 season for the Cardinals and didn't play again until Week 13 with the Chiefs. Humphries then missed three games with a hamstring injury and lost his starting role for the playoffs. The Rams, who have also recently signed lineman David Quessenberry, now have another veteran backup for their offensive line. Alaric Jackson and Rob Havenstein are the two starting tackles, but it's always good to have some experienced depth behind them.

Cameron McAdoo update: 'I still have a couple months until the doctors will release me'

Cameron McAdoo will not return to action until at least the end of the 2025 Pro Motocross season, according to an update by the rider on social media. 'Wanted to jump on and give everyone an update on my progress with the knee,' McAdoo posted on Instagram. 'Things have been going well and moving forward as planned with the recovery, I still have a couple months until the doctors will release me to be back on the motorcycle.' If McAdoo and the doctors are accurate in their timing, that would coincide with the week between Rounds 9 at Ironman and 10 at Unadilla. After starting only three rounds of the Monster Energy Supercross season, and finishing last in two of those (earning zero points), McAdoo is 48th in the combined SuperMotocross League standings with a gap of 38 points to 30th, which is the cutline to receiving an invitation to the playoffs without an overall win. 'This one has been a bit longer recovery due to it being my second time having this ACL worked on,' McAdoo continued. 'I am missing being on the bike and getting to go race on the weekends more than anything right now but as I know in due time I will get that opportunity. In the meantime, I've spent a lot of time pedaling bikes, at [Range Sports Therapy], lots of [physical therapy], and checking off some honey-do projects haha.' It is possible that McAdoo would choose to skip the last two rounds even if his knee is healthy enough for Unadilla or Budds Creek. His last attempt in the Pro Motocross series was in 2022 when he finished 18th in the standings with 83 points.
