Spot power prices dropped to zero in India on May 25, reflecting risk of 'Solar Maximum': Report
New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): In an unprecedented development, India's spot power prices fell to zero on May 25 because of the subdued weekend demand, says a report by IIFL Capital. The situation came due to the twin impact of early monsoon rains and a huge 25-gigawatt solar capacity addition over the past year. According to the IIFL Capital report, the situation was further compounded by limited thermal power backup, which created a rare surplus that sent prices on the power exchange tumbling to the bottom. The situation arises because India has not created a sufficient pumped or battery power storage system to store the surplus power generation. The IIFL report analysed the impact of the incident on various parts of the energy ecosystem. In India, we need both Pumped Storage Projects and Battery Energy Storage Systems that will benefit from surplus renewable energy (RE) supply available at very low prices. The situation is positive for the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) storage players, especially those with access to captive demand (TPWR, JSWEL, etc.), allowing RE capacity addition irrespective of grid-level supply constraints. The current situation is also beneficial for the exchanges as higher liquidity and lower prices equate with higher exchange volumes. The government is also actively promoting energy storage solutions, including both Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to improve grid stability and harness renewable energy sources. Specifically, the Ministry of Power and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) are involved in approving Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for PSPs and formulating schemes for BESS, like the Viability Gap Funding scheme. The report says green hydrogen and centres will sustain future growth. 'In addition to increased dependence on pumped storage and battery projects, we expect accelerated forays into adjacencies like green hydrogen, centres, and electricity-intensive manufacturing processes to sustain growth and enhance value capture.' It adds that the increasing requirement for adding larger storage capacities to RE projects will firm up supply and forward integration into adjacencies for enhanced value capture. It will also materially drive up capex per MW. Recent government data suggests India added a total power-generating capacity of 13,495 megawatts (MW) in the first quarter (1Q) of 2025, in which renewables accounted for 78.9 per cent of all new capacity additions. Solar power was the main contributor to this growth, accounting for 57.7 per cent of the total capacity addition. (ANI)

Hyd'bad Metro Phase II B DPRs finalised
Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail announced on Thursday that the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the proposed Phase II B corridors—JBS-Medchal-Shameerpet, and Airport—Future City Metro corridors—have been finalised. These metro corridors will cover a total distance of 86.1 kilometres and are estimated to cost Rs 19,579 crore. This has come into forefront after a few reports on incomplete preparation of DPRs for Medchal, Shameerpet, and Future City Metro Rail project were circulated recently. Claiming that this is false, NVS Reddy, Managing Director, Hyderabad Metro Rail, said, 'The DPRs for these proposed corridors for the next phase were prepared and approved by the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited Board on May 8. They are currently under review by the State government. The DPRs for these new corridors have been comprehensively prepared and submitted to the State government, considering the Central government guidelines, metro rail construction estimates in other States, and traffic needs of the Hyderabad capital region.' Highlighting that 18 stations have been planned in a 24.5 km JBS- Medchal route, a senior officer said, 'The JBS Station - Medchal route will be a fully elevated corridor of 24.5 kilometres with 18 stations, while the JBS Station - Shameerpet route will be a 22-kilometre corridor with 14 stations. This route will be 20.35 km of elevated section and 1.65 km of underground section near the Hakimpet Air Force Station.' He added that the RGIA-Future City (Skill University) corridor spans a total of 39.6 kilometres, including a 1.5-kilometre underground stretch at RGIA airport. The rest of the route comprises 21 kilometres of elevated track and 17 kilometres at grade (on the ground). This corridor will connect Shamshabad International Airport to Skills University, passing through Pedda Golconda and the Raviryala ORR exits. 'Full details will be out once the State government approves the DPRs and submits the proposal to the Central government. These reports have several aspects, including transforming the JBS region into an international hub,' added NVS Reddy.

HMRTC gets single bid for 2 proposed Gurugram Metro corridors
The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has received only one bid for preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two new proposed metro corridors in Gurugram — from Bhondsi to Gurugram railway station and from Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 4/5 — officials familiar with the matter said. The bid is currently undergoing technical evaluation. The financial bid will be opened only after the technical assessment is complete, officials said. The bid was invited on March 19 to appoint a consultant for the DPR preparation of these two Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) corridors. 'The HMRTC Board had accorded the approval for the preparation of a DPR of the above two MRTS corridors. Tender for the appointment of a consultant for the preparation of DPR has been floated. One bid has been received, which is under examination,' stated an official HMRTC communique. According to officials, the Bhondsi to Gurugram railway station metro line will span 17 km, passing through Vatika Chowk, Subash Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Sadar Bazar, and Gurugram bus stand, largely following Sohna Road. It will connect with the proposed Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar RRTS corridor at Rajiv Chowk and link up with the approved Metro extension from Millennium City Centre Metro station near Gurugram railway station. The second corridor, from Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 5, will be 13.6 km long. It is proposed to have stopped at Millennium City Centre Metro station, Signature Tower crossing, Rana Pratap Chowk, and Atul Kataria Chowk, following the Sheetla Mata Road alignment, officials said. A GMDA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these corridors will integrate with the existing Gurugram metro project and the RRTS network along National Highway-48 through key interchange stations. Meanwhile, the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) — a special purpose vehicle of the Haryana government — has already floated tenders for the civil construction of the 15-km Gurugram metro line connecting Millennium City Metro station to Sector 9.

SMC to engage multiple consultants for drainage projects
Surat: In a bid to ensure more transparency and expedite the execution of drainage network development projects, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to involve multiple consultants , shifting from the current practice of relying on a single firm for city-wide planning and implementation. Since the city's limits expanded in 2020 to cover 462 sq km, the need for an efficient drainage network has grown alongside its rapidly increasing population. Until now, only one consultancy—Green Design and Engineering Services Pvt Ltd—had been tasked with planning, designing, and preparing the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for both stormwater and sewage drainage systems. The firm was awarded a five-year contract in 2023 to develop a comprehensive drainage master plan. However, considering the large-scale infrastructure, municipal commissioner Shalini Agarwal proposed to the Standing Committee that multiple consultants be engaged to speed up the project timeline. The committee approved the proposal on Thursday for a tender-based appointment of additional agencies. "Appointing more than one consultant will allow for faster execution of key infrastructure projects. With the city expanding and its population growing, we need multiple professional agencies to manage the workload effectively," said Rajan Patel, Chairman of the Standing Committee. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thousands Are Saving Money Using This Wall Plug elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Click Here Undo The consultants will be engaged in various segments of the drainage infrastructure, including the development of sewage networks, pumping stations, sewage treatment plants, disposal lines, and stormwater drainage systems . The SMC's drainage department noted in its report that involving more consultants will foster healthy competition and result in more competitive pricing. Sources in the SMC said that projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore are currently under execution. Notably, the existing consultancy firm drew criticism over the controversial Asarma Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP) project, where the cost and scale of the work were reportedly escalated without approvals from senior officials.
