R&B Minister calls for completion of road works in Chittoor within six months

Minister for Roads and Buildings B.C. Janardhan Reddy on Friday instructed officials to expedite road construction works in the Chittoor, Palamaner, and Madanapalle divisions. Reviewing the progress of road development at Palamaner, the Minister stressed that projects sanctioned under various schemes must be completed within six months. He directed officials to immediately initiate the tender process. Emphasising the need for improved inter-State connectivity with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said the State government continues to prioritise road infrastructure. He stated that proposals would soon be submitted to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and asked officials to prepare the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) accordingly. Officials from the Roads and Buildings Department informed the Minister that the pothole-free road initiative had been completed 100% across the erstwhile Chittoor district. Mr. Janardhan Reddy warned contractors against unjustified delays in execution and urged strict adherence to timelines. Reiterating the importance of quality and transparency in all road works, the Minister instructed officials to ensure there was no compromise on either aspect. Palamaner MLA N. Amarnath Reddy, District Cooperative Central Bank chairman Amasa Rajasekhar Reddy, and senior officials from the Revenue, Roads and Buildings, and Panchayat Raj departments were present.

Tripartite river management project between West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand in the works: West Bengal Minister

The Minister of Irrigation and Waterways in West Bengal, Manas Ranjan Bhunia, on Thursday (July 31, 2025), announced that West Bengal is planning a 'mega river management project' with Bihar and Jharkhand, for the Gangetic plains of Malda and Murshidabad districts. 'A coordination meeting was held between Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal and the Ganga Flood Control Commission (GFCC) in Patna on July 24 this year. GFCC estimated that the brunt of the river lies 80% on West Bengal, 15% on Jharkhand and the rest on Bihar. They asked the three States to submit Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for erosion abatement. West Bengal is ready,' Mr Bhunia said on Thursday. He added that West Bengal has planned a project worth ₹610 crores, particularly in the Malda and Murshidabad districts, through which the Ganga enters West Bengal and takes a southward turn to the Bay of Bengal as the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River. 'The Ganga flows down from north India, passes through Bihar and Jharkhand, and slams against the Ratua 1 block of Katahadiara in Malda district with heavy flow and momentum. The land here is getting increasingly engulfed by the river. The lives and livelihoods of people are threatened,' Mr Bhunia said. The Minister explained that the proposed project would include measures for erosion abatement, flood management, dredging, and strengthening of the embankment, and aims to start with bank protection work and building five spurs in a 5 km stretch in Ratua from December this year. 'The idea is to control the velocity and momentum of the Ganga by draining out some portion of the river from the more vulnerable left bank in Bihar and West Bengal, to the more stable right bank towards Jharkhand, and reduce its impact particularly on Ratua block,' Mr Bhunia said. He added that the GFCC advised Jharkhand and Bihar to accord West Bengal 'no objection' to carry out dredging in a 15 km area in Jharkhand's Sakrigali. West Bengal losing land According to the Irrigation Minister, the problem of extreme river erosion and flooding in this State has existed since India's independence, with around 3,394.8 hectares of land in West Bengal being engulfed by the Ganga between 2005 and 2024. 'The entire stretch of river spanning 163.5 km through Malda, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts is very prone to erosion. The abatement of river erosion cannot be handled by West Bengal alone. It is a national problem,' Mr Bhunia said. The West Bengal government carried out anti-erosion work in Malda and Murshidabad earlier, with six different activities ongoing for a total length of 6.83 km for ₹58.77 crores. The Chief Minister had earlier written to the Prime Minister in 2022 about the severe extent of erosion, particularly in Malda's Manikchak block.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary directs APGENCO to fast-track power projects, improve efficiency

Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has directed APGENCO to enhance operational efficiency, fast-track project implementation, and strengthen financial management to meet the State's growing energy demands. Chairing a high-level review meeting at Vidyut Soudha on Monday, Mr. Vijayanand emphasised close monitoring of thermal and hydel generation, maintaining adequate coal stocks, and resolving financial dues without delay. The Chief Secretary noted a 10% increase in thermal power generation by APGENCO and APPDCL in FY25, reaching 35,547 million units (MU), while hydel output registered a sharp 95% rise. While appreciating the improved performance, he underscored the importance of sustaining this momentum through systematic maintenance and benchmarking practices. Key projects under review included NTTPS Stage V (800 MW), RTPP Stage IV (600 MW), and SDSTPS Stage I (2x800 MW). He flagged procurement delays and manpower deployment gaps for immediate resolution. Progress of major hydel projects such as Polavaram (960 MW) and proposed pumped storage schemes was also assessed. The Chief Secretary instructed APGENCO to expedite preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), land acquisition, and statutory clearances to avoid future bottlenecks. Addressing financial challenges, Mr. Vijayanand directed finance teams to prioritise clearing dues and improving cash flow. He called for weekly monitoring, better inter-departmental coordination, and a result-oriented approach to ensure long-term energy self-sufficiency for the State.

India's Bullet Train Network To Expand, Here's What's Next After Mumbai-Ahmedabad

Last Updated: Railways begin planning bullet train routes beyond Gujarat-Maharashtra corridor. India is gearing up for the next phase of its bullet train revolution. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has officially begun preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for new high-speed rail routes across the country. This step marks a major push to extend the bullet train network beyond the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. NHSRCL, a joint venture between the Central Government and various state governments, is responsible for implementing high-speed rail projects throughout India. Why is Expansion Being Considered? As per The Indian Express, in a recent written reply to the Lok Sabha on July 23, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government is actively working on expanding the high-speed rail (HSR) network. The aim is to improve connectivity between key commercial, economic, and tourist cities. However, Vaishnaw also highlighted that bullet train projects are highly capital-intensive, and new routes will be approved based on several factors — technical feasibility, financial viability, traffic demand, and availability of funds. These corridors are being studied to understand the demand, cost, and benefits of running bullet trains on these routes. When Will the First Bullet Train Start? The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is India's first bullet train route. It is being developed with help from the Government of Japan, both technically and financially. The government aims to complete the Gujarat stretch (Vapi to Sabarmati) by December 2027, and the entire route including Maharashtra by December 2029. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. NHSRCL is a joint venture (JV) between the Government of India and participating state governments, is tasked with implementing high-speed rail (HSR) projects across the country. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (July 23), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Ministry of Railways is actively working on plans to extend the HSR network beyond the MAHSR corridor. 'In order to expand the HSR network in India beyond MAHSR corridor and to meet the growing passenger demand between major cities of commercial/economic and tourist importance, Detailed Project Report (DPRs) are being prepared by National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL),' Vaishnaw said. The Union Minister further added that HSR projects are highly capital intensive and any decision for taking up new project is based on many factors such as technical feasibility, financial & economic viability, traffic demand and availability of funds and financing options, etc. The MAHSR project has been undertaken with technical collaboration and financial assistance from the Government of Japan. Earlier, the National Rail Plan mentions the following routes for future possible development for high speed rail network: The Ministry of Railways has targeted to complete entire MAHSR project by December 2029. 'The Gujarat portion of the corridor between Vapi and Sabarmati is planned to be completed by Dec, 2027. The entire project (Maharashtra to Sabarmati section) is expected to be completed by Dec, 2029,' the minister replied.
