3 Houston Restaurants to Try This Weekend: May 30
Each week, we'll provide a trusty list of recommendations to answer the most pressing of questions: 'Where should I eat?' Here are three places to check out this weekend in Houston. And if you need ideas on where to drink, here's our list of the hottest places to get cocktails in town . For Detroit-style pizza: Gold Tooth Tony's 1901 North Shepherd Drive, Suite 4, Heights 5225 Bellaire Boulevard, Bellaire 2010 Waugh Drive, Montrose Pizza is always an easy, no-cooking way to end a long week, and while ordering delivery from a chain might seem easiest (Domino's is my go-to lately), sometimes it's good to treat yourself to something special. Fortunately, Houston is brimming with different styles, including Neapolitan; ironclad, a newer-Texas style; and my personal kryptonite, Detroit-style. Anthony Calleo, the pizza mastermind behind Gold Tooth Tony's, has spent a long time working on his craft, starting with his days at the now-closed Pi Pizza to slinging pizzas at Rudyard's and consulting at Betelegeuse Betelgeuse, where the round ironclad-style pizzas have his fingerprints all over them. Now, Calleo has three pizzerias of his own where he dishes out some of the best cheesy Detroit-style pizzas in town, built on a base that offers a pillowy combination of focaccia and sourdough with crispy edges and generous lines of tomato sauce. Diners can build their own pizza with a selection of toppings, but the signature combinations cover all the bases, with classics including pepperoni and cheese pizzas and more adventurous renditions, like the carb-loaded Mac Attack is Back with macaroni and cheese and bacon. Favorites include the Detroit Supreme, which is covered with a mixture of meats and veggies, and Sebastian's Big Idea, a pie that hits all the notes of sweet and salty with spam, togarashi-roasted pineapple, and furikake seasoning. Be sure to look at some of the menu's other items, which include doughy garlic knots, pizza tots, and an assortment of wings served with two styles of homemade ranch (appropriately listed on the menu as the Nectar of the Gods). For a cinematic experience: Haii Keii 3300 Kirby Drive, Suite 9-A, Upper Kirby If you or someone you know would love to dine on what feels like the set of Kill Bill , this one is for you. This new Japanese restaurant in Upper Kirby will make you feel like you're in a movie, with dark and moody interiors illuminated by neon signs, sultry two-person booths separated by red ropes, a bar with an overhanging upside-down bonsai tree, and an LED display of mysterious, shadowy figures floating through the dining room. Go for a few cocktails or stay awhile to soak in the ambiance and dine in. The food and cocktails are captivating, too, with purple-hued ube espresso martinis, soft-shell crab fried rice, and a menu of sushi. Aside from its standout vegetarian nigiri made with delicate slivers of eggplant and bell pepper, Haii Keii also offers the most decadent Murimake roll, which is stuffed with king crab and topped with A5 wagyu and kaluga caviar. The touch of gold leaf on the roll is nice, but the best part is the accompanying crackling crab butter candle. Made from a boiled-down and molded combination of crab and butter, the lit candle sits at the end of the plate in a hunk of wasabi to keep it steady, dripping butter for your dipping pleasure. For a seafood splurge: Little's Oyster Bar 3001 South Shepherd Drive, Montrose One of the newest additions to the Pappas Restaurants catalog has recently switched up its menu, reminding me why we named Little's Oyster Bar the Best New Restaurant in 2023. From start to finish, the menu bedazzles, with quality cold bar offerings, refreshing appetizers like the delicate Local Greens salad, which is paired with a honey dressing and the creamiest goat cheese, and a tender grilled octopus (arguably the best in the city) served with a luxurious zhug you'll want to sop up with the marbled potatoes. Aside from its fresh catches, including a standout Gulf Grouper (ask for the heirloom tomato sauce vierge), the lobster gnocchi is the dish that captivates, with an herbaceous sauce composed of blistered cherry tomatoes with bits of crunchy potato chips for added texture. Dining here, however, will cost you a pretty penny. Most dishes will run you over $20, with entrees priced at $43 and up (and that's not including sides). But you could also pop in for oysters and a martini, or a heart-warming bowl of cioppino with buttery sourdough and a side of Pappas's irresistibly crispy fries. Little's is one of those restaurants you should treat yourself to every once in a while. Sign up for our newsletter.

I spent 8 years living in big cities on the East Coast before realizing my ideal home was the smaller one where I grew up
After living in Miami, Boston, and NYC, my husband and I chose to buy a home in Rochester, NY. For a midsize city, we think the access to nature and fabulous food are unparalleled. We also love the variety of art and culture available through museums and festivals. Within 24 hours of graduating from college, I hit the road and drove 1,500 miles away from my hometown to begin my first full-time job. I was officially in the "real world." For the next eight years, I moved from apartment to apartment and city to city, spending my 20s exploring Miami's vibrant art scene, Boston's rich history, and New York City's — well, everything. Still, when it came time to sign another yearlong lease on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, my husband and I reconsidered. With dreams to start a family and possibly a business someday, we decided to move back to my hometown of Rochester, New York, in June 2024. Upstate New York has so much to offer For a midsize city, I think Rochester has earned some major bragging rights. It's the birthplace of Wegmans, has over 140 annual festivals, and is home to the largest variety of lilacs on earth (a fun fact that requires its own festival, of course). The area's greatness is catching on, too. This year, Redfin named Fairport, New York, (a suburb of Rochester) one of the hottest neighborhoods in the country. The food and beverage scene is incredible I may have been spoiled by New York City's global cuisine, but it's safe to say that Rochester has impressed me, too. If I'm in the mood to go out, I like to make reservations at the upscale steakhouse Patron Saint, the buzzy farm-to-table space Good Luck, or the seven-time Michelin-starred restaurant Redd. Meanwhile, if the day calls for casual eats, you'll find my husband and I at the beloved hot dog joint Dogtown, the family-owned Mexican eatery Peach Blossom, or a local favorite, Pizza Wizard, for a Detroit-style slice. Award-winning wineries, breweries, and distilleries are also rising in popularity everywhere from Rochester's downtown to suburbs like Fairport. The beautiful nature is next-level We traded taxis and turnstiles for scenic trails, and we couldn't be happier. With more than 12,000 acres of parkland, this part of New York has plenty of wide open spaces to explore, all a relatively short drive from Rochester's city limits. Our favorite place to hike is Highland Park, which was designed by the same landscape architect who created Central Park. Although we enjoyed our days biking alongside the Hudson River and relaxing on the esplanade in Boston's Back Bay, our close proximity to the Finger Lakes is yet another reason we chose to grow roots in Rochester. We love spending weekends in the summer visiting the numerous vineyards in New York's wine country. Living in Rochester also means we can plan a mountain escape to the Adirondacks, a day trip to Niagara Falls, or a last-minute attempt to see the Northern Lights over Lake Ontario. There's always a museum to visit or an event to attend We may not be catching Broadway shows on Tuesday nights anymore, but the variety of art and culture here in Rochester is off the charts. I recommend visiting the Strong National Museum of Play, George Eastman House, and the world-class performances at the Rochester International Jazz Festival. My favorite event of the year is Fairport Canal Days, a weekend-long celebration featuring local artisans, trendy food trucks, and a whimsical rubber duck charity race held on the Erie Canal. I'm so glad I found my way back to my hometown After a year of being back in Rochester, I couldn't be happier with my decision to return. When I was younger, I didn't necessarily appreciate the delicious food, proximity to nature, or thriving art scene. But now, I understand just how special Rochester really is.

The best places to eat in Napa before and after BottleRock this weekend
Napa's BottleRock Napa Valley is arguably more famous for its food than its musical acts. (It even has a star-studded culinary stage.) Nevertheless, festival food is expensive, often requires waiting in long lines and doesn't always live up to the hype. Luckily, some of Napa's best restaurants are within walking distance of the festival grounds. Here are the top casual food options — recommended by a longtime Napa local — for breakfast, lunch and late night if you're headed to BottleRock, which runs Friday-Sunday, May 23-25. Breakfast San Francisco Chronicle associate restaurant critic Cesar Hernandez crowned Contimo's fluffy, buttery biscuits the Bay Area's best. Try them with the Ham & Jam breakfast sandwich ($8.75) — add Pimento cheese for a surprising twist — or whatever the 'Baller Biscuit' special is on Friday, and pair with coffee or a mimosa. Napa Farmers Market Swing by the Napa Farmers Market on Saturday morning and piece together a robust breakfast spread consisting of Toasted's bagels, breakfast tacos from Ray Ray's, Frenchy Gourmet's insanely creamy yogurt and fresh fruit from a local farm. 1100 West St., Napa. 8 a.m.-noon Saturday. Croccante Find Napa's best hangover brunch in an unexpected location: Detroit-style pizza joint Croccante. Recover from the previous night's festivities with steak and eggs ($26), a massive stack of buttermilk pancakes ($18) and khachapuri ($18), a cheesy, egg-topped Georgian specialty. Rory's Bakehouse 2766 Old Sonoma Rd., Napa. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Lunch One of downtown Napa's longest-running eateries, Small World serves criminally underrated Mediterranean fare. Get the lamb salad ($18); it should keep you full until dinner. Armistice Brewing This chill Napa brewery offers a two-for-one: Pre-game with a pint or two while you scarf down a filling, juicy burger made by French Laundry alum Christopher Ruiz of Butter's Burgers. If you're feeling especially hangry, opt for the incredibly messy pastrami burger ($17). The brewery will also stay open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday for BottleRock. Joella's Deli The fried chicken sandwich ($18) stuffed with a spicy ranch slaw at Joella's Deli food truck — founded by another French Laundry alum — ranks among the best fried chicken sandwiches in the Bay Area, according to the Chronicle's Hernandez. If you're in an empty industrial park, you're in the right place. 2410 Second St., Napa. 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Rutherford Pizza at Frankie's Deli Napa's first New York City-inspired slice shop opened just in time for BottleRock, and it's the best deal in town. This satellite location of Napa's Rutherford Family Pizza slings $5 slices, including pepperoni, chicken alfredo and Hawaiian, until 3 a.m. (yes, seriously) on Friday and Saturday. 1331 First St., Napa. 4 p.m.-3 a.m. Friday-Saturday. The Fink The Fink has the most extensive and inventive cocktail menu in Napa, but don't sleep on its bar food, like the Japanese-inspired egg sandwich ($15), Korean-style fried chicken ($15) and Maine lobster roll ($26). 530 Main St., Napa. 4 p.m.-12 a.m. Friday-Saturday, 4 p.m.-11 p.m. Sunday. Oxbow Public Market One block from the festival grounds, the Oxbow Public Market is throwing a cover-free, after-party on Saturday featuring a D.J. and food from its vendors, including Hog Island Oyster Co. and Loveski Deli. 61 First. St., Napa. 10 p.m.-12 a.m. Saturday.

The Best Chef-Approved Midwestern Pizza Comes...From This Gas Station?
If you think about it, pizza tells the most beautiful immigrant tale. What started out with very humble beginnings in Naples, Italy traveled across the ocean, landed in America and did the impossible. Not only did it survive but wait for it, pizza thrived and became a staple food across the country. (Could pizza be the culinary peer of Alexander Hamilton?) From New Haven clam pizzas to Chicago deep-dish and Detroit-style pan pizza to the oh-so-controversial Hawaiian, everyone has a different regional claim to what the best pizza should be. And Midwesterners are no exception. If you crave a solid pizza in the heartland (outside of Chicago), there's a high chance you'll get in your car and head straight to the bright red-roofed building of your local Casey's gas station. Related: Founded in 1959, Casey's is the third-largest convenience store retailer and the fifth-largest pizza chain in the United States. Casey's has a devout following, and for good reason. Chief among them? Casey's iconic made-from-scratch Midwestern-style pizzas. Ask anyone who's road-tripped through Kansas or Iowa and they'll tell you a pizza pit stop at Casey's is a must. Even celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern is a huge fan of Casey's pizza. 'I love gas station food and have tasted three lifetimes' worth throughout my travels, and Casey's pizza rises to the top,' Zimmern told Parade in an exclusive interview. And Zimmern is far from the only fan. The pizzas are so beloved that in 2024, Casey's sold 45 million pizzas. Related: 😋😋SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter. 🍳🍔 Casey's pizza isn't just regarded as the best gas station pizza in the Midwest. It's regarded as the best pizza in the Midwest—full stop. And like any good pizza, the magic comes down to the dough, which is made fresh every morning by the kitchen team working at every Casey's location. "Pizza comes down to the crust. If the crust isn't good, there's no saving the pizza," Zimmern explains to Parade. "You can put the most artisanal, glorious stuff on there and I would say you're ruining those glorious artisanal ingredients because the platform isn't right. It's like having bad rice with sushi." The love and attention to detail Casey's puts into every pizza is why it stands out in a noisy market of mass-market chain pizzas. As a Casey's fan and brand collaborator, Zimmern has visited Casey's locations to see how the pies are made. "They (the kitchen team) are docking the dough (putting holes in it) and what that does is promote even cooking. Better ingredients, smarter cooking. It's really a Midwestern icon," he says. Related: Casey's offers a variety of classic pizza toppings, like sausage and pepperoni, plus specialty pies, including BBQ Chicken and Taco Pizza, but the Breakfast Pizza is probably the pizza the chain is most known for. It's a fan favorite and comes loaded with scrambled eggs and cheese, topped with your choice of bacon, sausage or vegetables. Every so often, Casey's will also offer limited-edition pizzas. And this year, just in time for National Barbecue Day, the regional chain is bringing back its beloved BBQ Brisket Pizza. Related: Casey's BBQ Brisket Pizza features their signature made-from-scratch dough topped with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, jalapeños, red onions and a creamy ranch dressing drizzle. The star of the pie is the double-hardwood, pit-smoked beef brisket that's dry-rubbed, slow-smoked for up to 16 hours, hand-trimmed and piled high for a smoky, savory bite in every slice. 'Their homemade pizza is packed with big flavors, unique textures and fresh ingredients. The BBQ Brisket Pizza is a perfect example of that," says Zimmern. "I can't wait for their guests to rediscover it this summer. Gas station pizza is my guilty pleasure—been saying it for about 20 years—and Casey's is simply the best.'
