How Tigers surprised Zach McKinstry with MLB All-Star announcement

Ichiro Suzuki and Barry Bonds. Those are the two names Zach McKinstry said he first thinks of when he recalls MLB All-Star Game memories from his childhood. Well, now he needs to add his own name to that list, after the Detroit Tigers' do-it-all utility man was officially added to the team Wednesday, July 9, shortly after 5 p.m. Advertisement The public announcement came over the public address system at Comerica Park, when a graphic flashed on the scoreboard in left field that the former Central Michigan standout would become the fifth Tigers player to go to the Midsummer Classic in 2025. Detroit Tigers Zach McKinstry smiles as he celebrates after hitting a home run against the Twins at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday, June 28, 2025. But the private announcement came the evening before, when manager A.J. Hinch had compiled the others, including Javier Báez, Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres and Tarik Skubal into his office when he called "Z-Mac" too "Super cool," McKinstry said following the Tigers' 7-3 loss on Wednesday. "When I looked around the room, I kind of felt it was coming and it was just a pretty cool moment to have those guys in there with me. A.J. just said 'all the players here are All Stars' so that was pretty cool." Advertisement McKinstry also had to keep his cool for about 18 hours, from when he found out on Tuesday, July 8, until the embargo broke the following afternoon. He joked he intentionally stayed away from media prior to the game, and he and his inner circle did a good job of keeping it on the "down low." DETROIT SPORTS HAVING A MOMENT: Here are 29 reasons why There were, of course, a few people he told: his wife, agent, parents, brother, sister, his wife's family and a handful of friends. Hinch said he was surprised that media gathered outside the clubhouse didn't hear the eruption from outside the locker room. Hinch almost blew it pregame, too, when he was asked about sending five people to Atlanta, including bat boy Frankie Boyd, when he said its six, then quickly talked it back and said, yeah, maybe five. Advertisement "I almost ruined it today, but I can count," Hinch quipped. "We weren't allowed to talk about it (publicly) but I could tell him ... we all just talked about his journey a little bit, (president of baseball operations) Scott (Harris) was in there and he traded for him to bring him into the organization, George (Lombard) was in there who worked so hard with him on baserunning and outfield, Joey Cora was in there, you know, infield coach. "Just everybody was so proud of him ... very rewarding moment for me as a manager, but more importantly for Z-Mac as a player amongst the elite." Detroit Tigers third baseman Zach McKinstry (39) slides to third base after hitting a triple against the Chicago Cubs during the fifth inning of the game at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday, June 7, 2025. The journey certainly has not been the typical one of an All-Star, even one making it for the first time at age 30. Prior to 2025, McKinstry had never hit better than his 2023 season, his first in Detroit, when he batted .231 with a .302 OBP and 1.2 wins above replacement. Advertisement This year, however, he's already on pace to smash those numbers. His average (.286) and OBP (.358) are both more than 50 points higher, while his OPS (.826) is nearly 170 points north of his previous best. When he woke up Thursday, July 10, following his latest two-double performance, his batting WAR (2.7) was tied for No. 31 in baseball, along with teammate Riley Greene, directly ahead of players like Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Max Muncy. Detroit Tigers third baseman Zach McKinstry (39) hits an RBI double in the fourth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. McKinstry's eight triples are second best in the American League (Jarren Duran, 10) and already a career-high, while his seven home runs are two shy (9), his 14 doubles are seven shy (21) and his 13 steals are three back (16) of his career bests, all posted in 148 games played in 2023. Advertisement These 2025 numbers have come in just 85 games. "Just honestly, I couldn't think of a human more deserving," catcher Jake Rogers said. "All of his ups and downs, teams he's been, yeah, he's definitely a grinder. It's pretty cool to see a guy like that do well at all the positions around the field. "Gave him a big hug, everyone was super excited for him and we were all hoping he was going to get in." Detroit Tigers outfielders, from left: Riley Greene, Parker Meadows and Zach McKinstry celebrate their win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Comerica Park in Detroit on Monday, July 7, 2025. With five All-Stars now selected, it's the most since the organization had six in 2013: Miguel Cabrera (3B), Prince Fielder (1B), Torii Hunter (OF), Jhonny Peralta (SS), Justin Verlander (P) and Max Scherzer (P). Advertisement Now, all that's left — other than making sure he packs both his infield and outfield gloves — is getting in touch with his "people" that he still uses for formal events from Los Angeles, whom he connected with during his time in the Dodgers organization. There's going to be a new suit on the way, marking the biggest milestone of his career to wear to the red carpet. No, he won't match with his teammates he joked. "Definitely going to be some Detroit stuff going on on the suit," McKinstry said. "It will be pretty cool." Email Tony Garcia at apgarcia@ and follow him on X at @RealTonyGarcia. (AP Photo/Jose Juarez) WASHINGTON (AP) — The Detroit Tigers placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right hamstring strain. The move was retroactive to Monday. The 27-year-old, who is hitting .257 with 16 homers and 32 RBIs this season, was lifted in the fifth inning of Sunday's game against Minnesota for a pinch runner. Advertisement Manager A.J. Hinch indicated Carpenter will not return before the All-Star break. 'It's mild. It's very similar to what he's been playing through, but this is the second time we've had this scare on the field where we're not sure if he can continue to go — the outfield play, the running,' Hinch said. 'So we have to err on the side of caution here and give him the break and see if we can knock this out over this course of these next few weeks.' Detroit recalled infielder Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo to take Carpenter's roster spot before Wednesday's doubleheader against the Washington Nationals. Sweeney, who is hitting .221 with four home runs and 23 RBIs in 70 games, was sent to the minors Saturday. 'I joked with him that in 48 hours he fixed all the things we talked about that he had to work on in Triple-A,' Hinch said. 'But I'm glad he's back because as our roster fills up, the versatility still matters.' Advertisement The Tigers also placed right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list with neck stiffness and recalled righty Tyler Owens from Toledo. Detroit also summoned left-hander Bailey Horn from Toledo as its 27th man for the doubleheader. Detroit's staff could also soon get bolstered by the return of right-hander Reese Olson, who has been out with a finger injury since May 18. He is 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA in nine starts this season. 'His next outing is going to be in the big leagues,' Hinch said. 'It's unlikely to be here in Washington, but he's doing fine and just kind of waiting to be activated.' ___ AP MLB:

Erie Seawolves — Detroit Tigers' Double-A team — will be renamed Moon Mammoths by John Oliver's HBO show

NEW YORK — The Detroit Tigers' Double-A Erie Seawolves will be renamed the Erie Moon Mammoths after being picked by John Oliver of HBO's 'Last Week Tonight.' Oliver devoted a May 4 segment to names and promotions of minor league baseball teams, announcing: 'We are willing to use all of our resources and stupidity to give one Minor League Baseball team a total rebrand. We will give you a new team name, a new mascot. We will even throw you a theme night. It will be personalized and it will be bespoke.' Two weeks later, Oliver selected Erie from among 47 team submissions. Oliver said the northwestern Pennsylvania team had given 11 reasons it should be picked, including the team had pioneered cotton candy hot dogs and pointed out 'The SeaWolves play baseball nowhere near the sea.' Oliver announced Sunday he had chosen Moon Mammoths, using Bob Costas' voice as narrator of a promotional video introducing the moniker. The name was inspired by the 1991 discovery of woolly mammoth remains by George Moon, a Summit Township resident who found a bone while scuba diving in Lake Pleasant, about 8 miles south of Erie. The mammoth remains are housed in the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Erie, which has won the past two Eastern League championships, will be renamed the Moon Mammoths for games on July 19, Aug. 19, Sept. 12 and Sept. 13. Major League Baseball said Monday the team will wear jerseys with a rising moon with the team's name across the chest, a moon on sleeves and a patch with a woolly mammoth wearing a space helmet. Oliver is expected to attend the July 19 game against Chesapeake, called a 'Mammoth Fun' night. The first 1,000 ticketed fans will receive a Moon Mammoths squishy toy and there will be postgame fireworks. George Moon was also invited to attend.

Who is Tarik Skubal, the American professional baseball pitcher? Net worth, love life, and more

Image: You may have heard left-handed fireballer Tarik Skubal's name blazing across headlines—he's the Detroit Tigers' ace, 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner, and Triple Crown champ. But there's a lot more to the man than flaming fastballs. Born November 20, 1996, in Hayward, California, and raised in Kingman, Arizona, Skubal flew under the radar early in his career. He attended Seattle University—silent yet determined, with only one Division I offer—and overcame Tommy John surgery during his college years. Drafted in the ninth round by the Tigers in 2018, he didn't immediately shimmer—he worked his way up, posting eyebrow-raising stats across the minors before debuting in August 2020. But 2024 was the year everything clicked. Skubal led the AL in wins (18), ERA (2.39), and strikeouts (228)—earning the coveted Triple Crown and being voted AL Cy Young unanimously with all 30 first-place votes. His rise is the baseball version of a feel-good movie. Tarik Skubal net worth So, how much is he worth? Exact figures aren't public, but rough estimates for 2025 place his net worth between $2 million and $3 million—not bad for someone a few years into their major-league career. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! Expertinspector Click Here Undo As per reports in 2025 he has earned $10.15 million, via a one-year deal. Tarik Skubal love life Behind the mound, Skubal's biggest milestone is his high school sweetheart, Jessica. Their love story began in Kingman, AZ—they weathered high school, college, and a long-distance phase before Tarik popped the question in December 2020. They tied the knot on November 23, 2021, in Phoenix, with their dogs serving as ring‑bearers—cutest wedding ever? And then came baby Kasen Tyler, born October 18, 2023—parenthood has mellowed Tarik, he says, teaching him patience in a whole new way. They juggle lives between Phoenix (off-season home base) and Detroit during the season. There are cute moments, too: Jessica gifted him a sweet set of wheels—a new car for his 28th birthday, soon after he snagged that Cy Young trophy in November 2024. Beyond marriage and parenthood, the couple keeps things low‑key, supportive, and very real. Family ties go deeper: he's one of five brothers (including adoptive brother Wil, a SWAT sergeant), and Tarik admires their support and bravery. Off the field? Pizza preferences, fashion quirks—he's the classic laid-back athlete who owns it. Once led an AMA with MLB's YouTube channel where he opened up about everything from pizza style to clothes.
