CEA seeks to fix upper limit of spending by candidates
Announcing that it has conducted 159 elections since March 2024, the Cooperative Election Authority said that it wants the upper limit of expenditure by the contesting candidates to be fixed, among other things. Addressing the first consultative meeting with State Cooperative Election Authorities, CEA Chairperson Devendra Kumar Singh said, 'The Cooperative Election Authority has so far conducted 159 elections since March 2024 and is in the process of conducting 69 more such Cooperative Elections.' During the meeting, Singh said that the election process in Cooperative Societies need to be streamlined to foster transparency in order to make the elections in cooperative societies free and fair. 'The Chairperson, Cooperative Election Authority said that there is a need for standard manuals and codes of conduct for cooperative elections. The discussion revolved around matters relating to framing of Code of Conduct for contesting candidates and Multi-State Cooperative Society (MSCs), to fix upper limit of expenditure by the contesting candidates, publication of handbook for the Returning Officers, election of delegates from member Cooperative Societies who are members in National Cooperative Societies and other agenda received from State,' the Cooperative Ministry said in a statement. 'One of the agenda proposed by participating State Cooperative Election Authorities included introduction of Electronic Voting Machine in cooperative election,' the statement said. 'The CEA decided to hold the consultative committee meeting every three months to take forward the reform process in cooperative elections,' the statement said. The CEA was notified on March 11, 2024, by the Centre under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002. It is responsible for conducting elections of the Multi State Co-operative Society; and supervise, direct and control the matters relating to preparation of electoral rolls.

Co-op authority holds 1st consultative meet over free and fair polls
NEW DELHI: The Cooperative Election Authority Monday held its first consultative meeting with state cooperative election bodies, where the issue of whether EVMs can be used in cooperative polls was discussed, among others. The discussions, held to develop a mechanism to hold free and fair elections in cooperative societies, also took up matters relating to framing of a code of conduct for contesting candidates and Multi-State Cooperative Societies and fixing of an upper limit of expenditure for contesting candidates. The Cooperative Election Authority, notified in Mar last year as part of multiple reforms in the cooperative sector, has so far conducted 159 elections and is in the process of conducting 69 more cooperative elections. The meeting, helmed by CEA chairperson Devendra Kumar Singh, saw participation of the state poll commissioners from Odisha, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Maharashtra.

State cooperative election authorities suggest the use of EVMs in cooperative society elections
The State Cooperative Election Authorities have suggested the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in cooperative elections, the Union Ministry of Cooperation said in a statement on Monday (August 11, 2025). The Cooperative Election Authority held its first consultative meeting with the State Cooperative Election Authorities (SCEA) on Monday (August 11, 2025) to develop a mechanism to conduct elections in the sector in a free and fair manner. The meeting was chaired by Devendra Kumar Singh, Chairperson, Cooperative Election Authority, and attended by State Cooperative Election Commissioners from Odisha, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Maharashtra. 'The Cooperative Election Authority has so far conducted 159 elections since March 2024 and is in the process of conducting 69 more elections,' Mr. Singh said. The Cooperative Election Authority was notified on March 11, 2024, in exercise of the Union government's powers conferred by Section 45 of the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002, and its amendment of 2023. 'The election process in cooperative societies need to be streamlined to foster transparency,' Mr. Singh said. 'There is a need for standard manuals and codes of conduct for cooperative elections,' members of the State Cooperative Election Authorities said. The discussion included matters relating to the framing of the Code of Conduct for contesting candidates, and for Multi-State Cooperative Societies; fixing the upper limit of expenditure for contesting candidates; publication of a handbook for Returning Officers; election of delegates from member cooperative societies, who are members in national cooperative societies; and other agendas received from States. One of the agenda items proposed by participating State Cooperative Election Authorities included the introduction of Electronic Voting Machines in cooperative elections, the Cooperation Ministry said.

Lucknow: Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' campaign, institutions across Lucknow undertook largescale plantation drives to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Lucknow University planted 300 saplings on its main and second campuses on Wednesday, featuring fruit-bearing, ornamental and medicinal species like mango, amla, lemon, guava, palms, amaltas, kachnar, Ashok, champa, tulsi and aloe vera, with plans to add 1000 more by July end. LU vice-chancellor Alok Kumar Rai said: "This campaign is about more than just planting saplings it is about building a culture of environmental responsibility. By planting saplings, we are strengthening the emotional bond with nature and inspiring future generations to care for the environment." At National PG College, about 200 saplings, including mango, Ashoka, and sheesham, were planted. NPGC principal Devendra Kumar Singh said: "Our goal is to raise awareness about environmental protection in current times. Planting these saplings is a step toward tackling global warming and securing the future of our planet. We encourage our students to dedicate their trees to their mothers to make the gesture even more meaningful." Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University also participated in the campaign by planting saplings on its campus.
