‘He was a top lad': Man charged with murder after 15-year-old e-bike rider mowed down in horror crash

A 59-year-old UK man has been charged with murder after a 15-year-old boy was mowed down while riding an e-bike through a council estate in Middleton, Greater Manchester. Terrence King was arrested on suspicion of murder following the horror crash just before midday on Tuesday, after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) responded to reports of a collision between a car and an e-bike on Rowrah Crescent. The victim has been identified as Devon Simmonds, with locals describing the teen as a 'top lad' and 'very respectable'. Picture: Supplied As the teen turns around to ride back the way he came, the car veers left and smashes into him headfirst. Emergency services immediately attended but Simmonds was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are being supported by specialist officers. Police announced on Thursday afternoon that Mr King, of Caslterigg Drive, Middleton, had been charged with murder. He was remanded in custody to appear Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday, July 28. He is run down by a black car. A 15-year-old boy previously arrested on suspicion of theft as part of the wider investigation has been bailed pending further enquiries. One neighbour who knew Simmonds and his family told the Manchester Evening News, 'This involves the family of my friend. When something like this happens you just try to keep out of the way because it's a sad thing.' The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. He was very respectable, obviously it's a horrible thing to happen to him and his family.' Detective Inspector Andrew Naismith, from GMP's Major Incident Team, said the investigation was 'already moving at considerable pace and we have now secured a murder charge as part of our work'. 'I am aware of footage of the incident circulating online, and I would ask people to not share this footage due to ongoing proceedings, and out of respect for the boy's family, who I would remind people are grieving at this time. As we continue with our investigation, I would urge anyone with information to please get in touch — either to GMP directly or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.' Police had earlier urged members of the public not to 'speculate' about the incident. 'I want to remind people that at the heart of this is a grieving family, and I would ask the community to not speculate on social media while we piece together the events of earlier today,' Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Dean, from GMP's Rochdale district, said on Tuesday. Devon Simmonds: Murder charge over death of boy, 15, in crash
A man has been charged with murder after a 15-year-old boy was killed in a crash involving a car and an electric bike. Devon Simmonds, 15, died after the crash on Rowrah Crescent in Middleton at about 11:55 BST on Manchester Police (GMP) said Terrence King, 59, has been charged with murder in connection with the incident. Police said Mr King appeared before Manchester Magistrates Court earlier and was remanded in custody. The force said another 15-year-old boy who had been arrested on suspicion of theft, in relation to the same incident, was bailed pending further inquiries. Mr King is set to appear before Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on 28 July. Detective Insp Andrew Naismith of GMP said he was aware of footage of the incident circulating online which he asked people not to share due to ongoing proceedings and out of respect for the boy's grieving family. "There is still much to do, and our officers are carefully combing through all available evidence to build a picture of the events of that day," he said. Fireworks set off in 'memorial' for dead teenager as police called to 'disorder'
Fireworks were set off as 'hundreds' of youths gathered at a 'memorial' for a teenager who tragically died after a crash in Middleton. Police were called to reports of 'disorder' on the Langley estate on Tuesday night (July 22) where people gathered in tribute to the boy who died. Devon Simmonds, 15, lost his life in the collision on Rowrah Crescent. Police said it involved an e-bike and a car. Flowers, balloons and candles have been left in tribute to the teenager outside shuttered shops on a precinct in Longthwaite Close. Dozens of youths were still gathered at the precinct on Wednesday afternoon (July 23) with some spraying graffiti onto the walls. Sign up to the MEN Court newsletter here Greater Manchester Police attended the scene overnight following reports of 'disorder' while four fire crews were also in attendance. Pervaiz Iqbal, who works at a shop on the precinct, said that 'hundreds' of youths were gathered on the estate from around 6pm. He told the Manchester Evening News that some people climbed on top of the precinct but said that this was not uncommon. His colleague said that fireworks were being set off throughout the night, as late as 11pm, and claimed some were thrown at cars. However, another shopkeeper said that she was not aware of 'trouble', explaining that the youths had gathered for a 'memorial'. Mr Iqbal said: "A lot of people obviously, the customers are scared coming into the shop, especially old people. "They are very scared of coming into the shops because a lot of the boys, teenagers, are here and they did fireworks and stuff." Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, Devon Simmonds was sadly pronounced dead at the scene on Tuesday (July 22). A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning. Another 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of theft as part of the investigation. One resident who knew of the teenager said: "He was a top, top lad. Lived on this estate all his life and a lot of people knew him. "He was very respectable, obviously it's a horrible thing to happen to him and his family." Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that four crews were sent to the scene in Middleton after midnight. GMP were also in attendance following reports of 'disorder'. Local officers remain in the area, working with Rochdale council. Chief Inspector Nicola Hopkinson, of our Rochdale District, said: 'What happened yesterday was a tragic event that saw a young boy lose their life and our thoughts remain with Devon's family at this time. 'Officers are aware of antisocial behaviour taking place in the local area following this incident. This will not be tolerated and is completely unacceptable. 'We understand the emotions of the wider community and their need to grieve, but we will take action against anyone found to be involved in criminality. 'As part of our investigation, officers will be on hand to deal with any queries members of the public have. Feel free to raise any issues and speak to them if you have any concerns. Devon Simmonds: Tributes paid to 15-year-old boy killed in crash
Tributes have been paid to a 15-year-old boy who was killed in a crash involving an electric bike and a Simmonds was declared dead at the scene on Rowrah Crescent in Middleton shortly before 12:00 BST on Tuesday.A 59-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder, Greater Manchester Police said.A row of flowers have been left near the crash scene while other tributes including colourful balloons and candles have been placed at Lakeland Court shopping precinct. Mourners have also left messages of condolences on balloons and cards. One person wrote: "Rest in paradise Devon" while another message read: "RIP Dev. Always making everyone smile. You will be forever missed."Another said: "Forever 15 Dev. The biggest soul. Shine bright as always." The force said investigations were ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the crash after officers were called to reports of a collision on Rowrah are also looking into an alleged theft, over which another 15-year-old boy has been arrested, before the crash. Det Ch Insp Christopher Dean said: "This terrible incident has seen the death of a teenage boy."We are working hard to establish the full facts of this case, in what is the very early stages of an investigation."The force said the teenager's family was being supported by officers.
