Why dietary precautions are taken during Chaturmas; From scientific and religious perspectives

Every year, Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi and ends on Devuthani Ekadashi. During this period, millions of followers of Hinduism actively participate in religious activities and also observe strict dietary precautions. This year, Chaturmas will be observed from 6th July to 1st November. According to Celebrity Astrologer Parduman Suri, the scriptures state that consumption of alcohol, meat, onion, and garlic is considered inappropriate during Chaturmas. Additionally, leafy vegetables, eggplant, kadhi (a yogurt-based dish), and heavily fried foods are also discouraged. There are strong scientific reasons behind this dietary discipline. Scientifically, the four-month Chaturmas period coincides with the monsoon season. During this time, the body's digestive power weakens, and due to the increased humidity in the air, a large number of bacteria, insects, and microorganisms breed. Bacteria start developing in vegetables and water, especially in leafy greens, which are more prone to infestations. Hence, extra caution is advised regarding food during these months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like '이것' 부족하면 운동 소용없다.. 갱년기 살찐 진짜 이유 워킹맘 로즈 더 알아보기 Undo Religious texts also recommend light, balanced, and easily digestible meals during Chaturmas. This time is considered ideal for self-discipline, fasting, penance, devotional singing (bhajans), meditation, and spiritual practices. Devout Hindus often engage in self-control, fasting, spiritual gatherings, and listening to discourses by saints during this sacred period. It is noteworthy that in Hinduism, from Devshayani Ekadashi until Devuthani Ekadashi (a span of four months), auspicious activities like marriages, engagements, child's first mundan, housewarming, purchase of new vehicles or property, and any kind of construction work are avoided.
