31 July 2025 18:20 ABU DHABI (WAM) Hotel establishments in Abu Dhabi continued their positive performance in May 2025, driven by higher occupancy rates and an increasing number of international sector recorded total revenues of Dh682 million, reflecting the sustained growth of the emirate's tourism and hospitality to preliminary data from the Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi, released by the Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi, the breakdown of hotel revenues for the month includes Dh408 million from room revenues, Dh224 million from food and beverage services, and Dh50 million from other Dhabi's hotels welcomed approximately 481,000 guests in May 2025, highlighting the emirate's growing appeal as a world-class tourism destination. This growth is supported by the diversity of accommodation options and the high standards of hospitality services.A total of 172 hotel establishments were in operation in Abu Dhabi during the month, offering 34,383 rooms. The total number of guest nights exceeded 1.345 million, with an occupancy rate of 80%. The average revenue per available room reached from non-Arab Asian countries topped the list with 155,000 visitors, followed by Europeans with 112,000, and UAE nationals with 88,000, indicating the sector's continued momentum and the emirate's position as a preferred destination for global also hosted 31,000 guests from GCC countries, 52,000 from other Arab nations, 25,000 from North and South America, and 8,000 from non-Arab African countries, along with visitors from various other global category, five-star hotels received the largest number of guests, with 236,000 visitors, led by 72,000 European guests. Meanwhile, four-star hotels accommodated 126,000 guests, while hotels rated three stars or below welcomed 70,000, and hotel apartments hosted 50,000 guests.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to offer 350 distinctive two, three, four, and five-digit vehicle number plates in its 80th online auction for private and classic vehicles. The auction will feature plates from the following codes: H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z — including Classic. Registration opens on Monday, August 4, while the auction will go live on August 11, and will run for five days. All sales are subject to a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT), and participants must hold a valid traffic file in the Emirate of Dubai. To participate, bidders are required to submit a security cheque payable to RTA in the amount of Dh5,000, along with a non-refundable participation fee of Dh120. Red light violations in Abu Dhabi come with more than just a fine – they can lead to your vehicle being impounded, a mountain of black points on your licence and in some cases, even jail time. Authorities in the capital are cracking down hard on dangerous driving behaviour, especially at intersections. Whether you're checking your phone or rushing to beat the light, the consequences can be steep and immediate. According to Abu Dhabi's Law No. 5 of 2020, if you're caught running a red light, expect your vehicle to be impounded on the spot. To get it back? You'll need to pay a hefty Dh50,000 fine. That's on top of a 30-day impoundment period, and if the vehicle isn't claimed within three months, it may be auctioned off. This same law applies to a range of reckless driving offences including illegal racing, obscured or tampered licence plates, deliberate damage to police vehicles and dangerous driving. Jumping red lights is considered one of the most serious violations due to the risk it poses to other road users. Distracted driving – particularly using mobile phones – is one of the main reasons drivers fail to stop in time. The police regularly remind residents that even hands-free phone use can drastically reduce your reaction time. And it doesn't stop at fines and black points. If running a red light leads to a fatal accident, you could face prison time and fines of up to Dh100,000 under Article 40 of UAE traffic law. That's especially true if you're driving under the influence, using a cancelled licence, or attempting to cross flooded wadis. If you want to stay safe and avoid harsh penalties, Abu Dhabi authorities recommend slowing down when you approach intersections, stopping at amber lights instead of speeding through them and staying fully focused on the road. Pedestrians are also urged to follow signal rules and not cross on a red. As for the rest of the country, red light laws apply everywhere – but Dubai drivers should know that under Decree No. 30 of 2023, you'll also have to pay Dh50,000 to release an impounded vehicle after a red light violation. Dubai also allows for impoundment due to mobile phone use while driving. Bottom line: slow down, stay off your phone and don't risk it at intersections – in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else.
