Ahead of Worli sea face opening, look at speed limit, toll, intersections Over a year after the inauguration of the first phase, Mumbai's coastal road, called the Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road, has eased the daily commute for city's motorists. The Worli promenade extension of the coastal road, too, is set to open this month, after seven years of construction work. As the coastal road inches forward, a detailed look at the project and how it boosts connectivity and reduces traffic congestion. The eight-lane, 29.2-km road extends from Marine Lines in south Mumbai to Dahisar in the northern suburbs. It is projected to be used by 130,000 vehicles daily, and is expected to reduce the travel time from two hours to only 40 minutes. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 13,060 crore. Its first phase from Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was opened on March 11, 2024. PHASE 3 (BANDRA TO DAHISAR) Status: Planned The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in February floated a notice to change the reservation of 60 land parcels between Goregaon and Dahisar for the Mumbai coastal road project. Plans are also underway to extend the coastal road from Dahisar to Virar, aiming to reduce travel time from 3 hours to 1 hour. WHERE CAN YOU ENTER OR EXIT? THE KEY INTERSECTIONS Marine Lines: Accessed via the Princess Street Flyover. Worli Seaface: Provides entry and exit points. Haji Ali Interchange: Facilitates movement to and from the road. Amarsons Garden: Offers access to the coastal road. Rajani Patel Junction (Lotus Junction): Another entry/exit point. Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction: Provides connectivity. Vehicle Restrictions: Currently, only cars and buses are permitted on the coastal road. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and heavy vehicles are restricted. Speed Limits Straight Sections: Up to 80 km/h Tunnels: 60 km/h 7am to midnight THE TOLL Vehicles that move directly onto the sea link have to pay Rs 100 at the Bandra exit. The Worli sea face is set to open as a coastal road 7.5-km promenade from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link . The 20-metre-wide, sea-facing walkway will boost public access and walkability along the city's western coastline. It will have: 20 underpasses spaced every 400 metres, enabling smooth and safe access between the seafront and the inland side of the road. The 17-hectare public space will have a five-hectare central median being developed by Tata Sons and a 12-hectare promenade developed by the BMC. This project is part of a larger vision to create nearly 70 hectares of open space along the coastal road. Approximately 70% of the new space will feature green landscaping, while the remaining 30% will include paved walkways, cycle tracks and public seating areas. THE ACCESS POINTS The stretch will be served by nine access points, including Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Atria Mall and Madraswadi in Worli.
