Welding training institute proposed in city to meet growing demand for skilled workers

Nagpur: State director of steam boilers Dhawal Prakash Antapurkar has proposed setting up a welding training institute in the city. This would be the first of its type in the country. The officer was in the city to attend 'WeldConnect', an event on boiler performance and safety during which he put up the boilers, which are used for heat generation, are utilised in a number of sectors, with a major use in power generation. Due to safety related issues and the complex nature of the machine, its regulation comes under a separate is a key function of the boiler making industry, and welders are considered to be highly skilled workers, drawing up to Rs1 lakh a month. This is because there are numerous high-pressure joints in a boiler that have to be skilfully welded in a way that can sustain high pressure and even temperature. Each joint has to undergo intense inspection. At present, ITI passouts certified as welders by the directorate can carry out the job, said Antapurkar."The Nagpur institute would be the first of its kind training centre, which is also aimed at plugging the gap between the supply and demand of skilled welders," he have a major use in power plants. As eight to nine power plants are coming up in the central Indian region, which includes Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh, there would be a major demand for welders. Each unit may take 400 welders, he put up the proposals at the WeldConnect conference in the presence of the state's minister of labour Akash Fundkar.
