KP arrests man from Himachal for '22 bank fraud
Kolkata: The Kolkata Police's detective department arrested a man from Solan, Himachal Pradesh, in connection with a Rs 8.5 lakh bank fraud case dating back to 2022. The accused, Dheeraj Kumar, a resident of West Champaran, Bihar, was apprehended following a lengthy probe into the fraudulent withdrawal of a fixed deposit from a state-owned bank's Kasba branch. According to Rupesh Kumar, head of Kolkata Police's detective department, the fraud came to light when the victim, Soma Pal, discovered her FD was withdrawn without her knowledge upon its maturity. Probe revealed that members of the notorious Jamtara gang obtained Pal's confidential bank details and used them to break the FD. The money was subsequently used to settle a credit card bill, leading investigators to Kumar. "The case was transferred to the bank fraud division in 2025 following a Kolkata High Court order," a senior police official said. "Our surveillance team tracked the suspect to Solan, where he was arrested." Kumar is being brought to Kolkata on transit remand. Police officials believe his interrogation could help uncover other members of the fraud ring. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, which began with a complaint filed at Kasba police station by the victim, a resident of Kumarpara Lane.

Days After Cow Vigilante Rampage in Aligarh, Forensic Report Belies Beef Allegations
New Delhi: Days after four Muslim men were waylaid and assaulted by members of Hindutva outfits in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh on May 24 over allegations of smuggling beef, police sources have told The Wire that the meat was, in fact, not cow meat. Dheeraj Kumar, station house officer (SHO) at the Harduaganj police station, confirmed that a forensic report has debunked the beef smuggling allegations. The samples had been sent to a government laboratory in Mathura for testing. Earlier today (May 28), the Aligarh police posted on X that the allegations of beef smuggling are false. — ALIGARH POLICE (@aligarhpolice) May 28, 2025 Notably, this was the second time in the last 15 days that the same group of men targeted the victims' meat-transporting vehicle at the same spot. This time, they also set the vehicle ablaze and blocked the highway. New footage of the attack has emerged on social media in which the accused can be seen dragging one of the visibly unconscious victims out of a police car. The four men identified as Arbaz, Aqeel, Kadim, and Munna Khan – all residents of the Atrauli town in Aligarh – were allegedly stripped by the mob and attacked with sharp weapons, bricks, sticks and rods. SHO Dheeraj told The Wire that the police have arrested four accused persons, including three who had been named. The fourth accused was identified through visual evidence of the attack. They have been booked under various sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 191(3) (rioting with a deadly weapon), 109 (attempt to murder), 308(5) (extortion by issuing death threats), 310(2) and (dacoity). The four victims are understood to have been rescued by the local police after sustaining grievous injuries. Speaking to the press, SSP Amrit Jain had said that the four men were rescued and admitted to a hospital – Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital – by the police. Three of them were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Following the attack, and now after the revelations by the FSL report, families of the victims have demanded that the administration arrest all the attackers and drop the counter charges against the four victims. An FIR was filed against the four Muslim men by one Vijay Bajrangi under Sections 3, 5, and 8 of the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955. The FIR says that the meat-laden car was followed after a tip-off that it was carrying beef. Bajrangi has been arrested by the police, but the FIR has still not been cancelled. Mohammad Sajid, Aqeel's brother, said that the FSL report has made it clear that the meat was 'buffalo meat', and now the counter FIR should be dropped. 'The truth is before the whole world and media. They pressed these charges to save themselves. If the government doesn't drop the fake case by itself then nothing can be more disgusting. It's a double whammy for us,' Sajid said, adding, 'We have been promised representatives of different political parties that the fake case will be dropped.' Leaders of opposition parties like the Congress, SP, AAP and AIMIM condemned the attack and have met with families of the victims. On May 27, Nagina MP and the Bhim Army chief, Chandrashekhar Aazad, met the injured men at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Aligarh. Aazad said , 'This is a premeditated violence. It is not just an attack on the law and order of the state, but also an organised attack on the livelihood of the poor and Muslims.' Aqeel's father Salim had previously noted that their livelihoods had been at stake for a while now. He had told The Wire in the previous report that their work had been destroyed since the Adityanath-led BJP government came to power in Uttar Pradesh. He said that they were attacked despite having a license and despite sending samples of the meat to the police. Meanwhile, Sajid said that the cow vigilantes have turned into an extortion gang. 'This happened 15 days ago but luckily they were saved. These people have so much impunity because of the government…This time it happened in police presence. He was pulled out of a police car. They are all the same—BJP, RSS, Bajrang Dal. They have created this goon culture to divide society in the name of Hindu Muslim. They catch and attack random Muslims and that's it. There was nothing illegal but they still attacked people.'

Complaint, counter-complaint filed in alleged cow vigilantism episode in Aligarh, 3 arrested
A day after a group of persons allegedly assaulted four people from the minority community and set their truck on fire over suspicion of it being laden with beef near Alhadadpur village in Aligarh, the police Sunday first issued a notice and then arrested three accused of carrying out the attack. 'This is to inform the general public that on May 24, a photo has come to our notice related to an incident that occurred between Panaithi Road and Sadhu Ashram Road under Harduaganj police station. 'In the incident an FIR has been registered at the Harduaganj police station under BNS sections 191 (2)/191 (3)/190/109/308 (5)/310 (2)/3 (5). If any person has any information about those… visible in the… photo, then please inform the investigating officer, Dheeraj Kumar, SHO, Harduaganj, on his mobile number. The identity and address of the person will be kept a secret,' reads the notice issued by Sarjana Singh, Circle Officer, Atrauli. Talking to The Indian Express, an official said that the four victims were admitted to the JNMC Hospital in Aligarh. 'They were injured, but the injuries were not fatal,' he added. Two FIRs were registered in connection with the matter at the Harduaganj police station on Saturday. The first FIR was registered under sections of the UP Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, based on the complaint of one Vijay Bajrangi. Bajrangi, 35, has said that on Saturday, at around 8.40 am, on receiving information, he followed a Max vehicle at the Panaithi Road in Alhadadpur village. 'To stop them, I put my bike beside their vehicle. The driver of the vehicle tried to crush me, and so my bike went out of control,' reads his FIR. 'Seeing this, the labourers and farmers working in the nearby field ran towards the spot, and four men in the vehicle attacked them. When I looked inside the truck, I saw seven decapitated cows,' he further said in his complaint. The complainant has also levelled allegations against the police. 'When these four men were caught and interrogated, they said that they were smuggling cow meat by bribing the police with Rs 3 lakh,' he said. Bajrangi has further said in his complaint that the Harduaganj police station was informed about the same vehicle carrying beef about 15 days ago. Dheeraj Kumar, Station House Officer, Harduaganj, said that Bajrangi owns land in the area, but he has denied any connection with Hindutva organisations. 'We are investigating all his allegations,' he added. Nearly five hours later on Saturday, another FIR was filed by Salim Khan, father of one of the victims and uncle to another, under sections 191 (2) (rioting), 191 (3) (unlawful assembly), 190 (unlawful assembly to commit an offense), 109 (attempt to murder), 308 (extortion), 310 (2) (robbery), 3 (5) (joint criminal liability) of the BNS against 13 identified and 20 to 25 unidentified men. Khan, in his complaint, told the police that the four victims were on their way to sell meat from the factory located in Al-Ambar in Aligarh. 'The moment the vehicle reached Panaithi Road, Ram Kumar Arya and Arjun, planning a conspiracy, sent other men, Chetan Lodhi, Shivam Hindu Lodhi, Lavkush, Anuj Bhura, Vijay, Girish Kumar, Ankit, resident of Mahmudpur, Rana, resident of Alhadadpur, and Vijay Kumar Gupta to extort Chauth. (Chauth was a 25 per cent annual tax levied in areas of Mughal control by the Maratha empire.) 'They pulled four of them from the vehicle and demanded Rs 50,000. When they were denied, they were brutally beaten with wood, iron rods, and also robbed of their mobile phones and money,' Khan told the police. 'Fifteen days ago, a similar incident had happened where these men were demanding chauth of Rs 50,000, but because of the Akrabad police station, our vehicle was released,' said Khan.
