Review: The Cullinan, Dubai's sleek new steakhouse

Does Dubai have a really great high-end steakhouse? It's something I think to myself as I pull up at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab. The hotel – and its near dozen restaurants – are only six weeks into operation when we find ourselves heading to The Cullinan. But word has spread fast, and even though we're here for an early reservation, the dining room fills up quickly. Sure, in part, it can be credited to this being one of the newest tables in town. But I also suspect others also welcome the arrival of a glamourous steakhouse to Dubai's well-populated dining scene. The interiors are deliciously Art Deco. Think smooth white and grey marble, a monochrome tiled terrace, mirrored ceilings, and plenty of gold accents. If there was any doubt beforehand that this restaurant was a steakhouse, it melts away upon arrival, where grand meat display refrigerators, stocked with premium cuts, welcome guests. The dining room is expansive, but cleverly designed so it's still got soul. An open kitchen runs down one side, chefs bustling away at stations, while the other side opens out onto a long alfresco terrace that perfectly frames the Burj Al Arab for instant wow-factor. The Cullinan has a big focus on meat, but there's also seafood options across the starters, a page of salads, and a selection of mains that aren't steak for those not here to sample the premium cuts. The two pages of steaks might be overwhelming, but our friendly server is on hand to make expert recommendations and answer all our questions with a knowledge and passion that impresses. To start, we're told we have to try the steak tartare mille-feuille (Dhs118, pictured above), and we're very glad we do. It arrives as a beautifully plated ring of diced beef tenderloin topped with truffle caviar, cucumber pearls and gold leaf (this is Dubai, after all), with a creamy demi-glace poured into the middle. The flavours are powerful but balanced, and it's exceptionally good. The wood-fired prawns (Dhs95) are meaty but a little dry, despite the plate being dotted with a basil cream and yellow capsicum gel. Our steaks arrive, and the 300-day grain-fed Black Market ribeye I order (Dhs380) is near perfection. Each bite melts in the mouth, it's cooked just as I like it, and when dipped in a side of chimichurri (Dhs30), it creates the perfect pairing. You'll need to order sides too, and the garlic butter spinach (Dhs45) is one we'd order over and over again. For dessert, we like the look of almost all of them, but the white chocolate soufflé (Dhs85) is the ideally indulgent end to a meal that hits almost all the high notes. With a great soundtrack, sophisticated ambience, and a buzzy vibe that makes you want to keep the evening going at the bar after dinner, The Cullinan makes a solid case for one of Dubai's best new restaurants. Verdict: This is a sleek date night spot worth splashing out on. The Cullinan, Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, daily 12pm to 2am. There's a cool new Formula One-inspired mocktail in Abu Dhabi

Your love for sport and mixology, shaken and stirred… This race day-inspired mocktail is simply called Grand Prix , and it's part of La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi's cool new beverage menu, Déjà vu, that was unveiled last night on World Cocktail Day. With elderflower and pear taking pole position, the beverage, priced at Dhs52 (yes, LPM can be surprisingly affordable) celebrates one of the world's favourite races, the Monaco Grand Prix, known for taking place on a unique 'street-circuit' layout. Its cocktail counterpart is called, you guessed it, Monaco. Which should tell you how cleverly the new menu's been designed. It also packs in 9 other creatively conceptualised mocktails, including the Jane (Dhs118), with cantaloupe and tonic water (named after Jane Birkin). It's cocktail counterpart? The Birkin (also Dhs118) – served complete with a silk scarf. Talk about finesse. See a pattern? Déjà vu is cool, smart and clever – a mocktail list of 10 beverages, and a cocktail list serving 10 of its own – placed next to each other, the creations complement each other – all celebrating the Golden Age of the French Riviera. Media: Instagram, What's On archive Other interesting creations that grabbed our attention include the BB Sour/Tropezienne Sour , with lemon, honey and citrus olive oil, the Soleil/Solaris with pink grapefruit, cucumber and lemon, and of course, the Garden of Eden with salted pink apple and lavender soda. While we had to conclude things there since this was a Tuesday night, Déjà vu is an extensive, creative 'carte de boissons' of meticulous masterpieces designed and presented as a print magazine, rolling back the years to 1975. We'll go as far as to say this has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the Le Monde d'Hermès collectors' edition catalogues. French actress, singer, and model Brigitte Bardot makes the cover, before you flip through a whole new world of signature LPM hospitality. And if you're a traditionalist… …you can have a real déjà vu and order the evergreen Tomatini/Tomatino, or Lettre à Coco (inspired by Coco Chanel and Jean Cocteau's friendship). See more here. La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, noon to 1am. @lpmabudhabi > Sign up for FREE to get exclusive updates that you are interested in

UAE among best countries in quality of healthcare

In 2025, the UAE continues to strengthen its global position in the healthcare sector, achieving top rankings and outstanding performance indicators. The country ranked first globally in the number of accredited healthcare facilities, thanks to a healthcare system based on the highest international standards and enhanced preparedness to handle pandemics and health risks — making the UAE one of the leading nations in healthcare quality. The country also achieved advanced positions in healthcare quality indicators, showing significant progress in areas such as basic healthcare outcomes, infrastructure, and preventive healthcare. The UAE's leading position in these rankings is attributed to its ongoing strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure. For the 2025 fiscal year, the UAE allocated Dhs5.745 billion, equivalent to 8% of the federal budget, to healthcare and community prevention services, reflecting its sustained commitment to developing the health sector. The UAE is considered one of the world's top nations in healthcare, achieving high rankings across numerous international health indicators. It was ranked among the top 10 countries globally in 21 different health indicators, and secured 1st place regionally and 20th globally for healthcare quality. The UAE's leading status in these rankings is driven by a comprehensive national health strategy, significant investments in infrastructure, digital transformation in healthcare, and a strong focus on medical tourism. This reflects the nation's dedication to advancing healthcare services, meeting community needs, and enhancing its global standing. Mohaymen Abdelghany, CEO of Fakeeh University Hospital, Dubai, stated that the hospital earned 5-Star Rating in Global Hospital Rating by Newsweek & Statista. This highlights the hospital's role in setting new standards in patient-centered care, clinical excellence, and medical innovation, placing it among the world's elite hospitals. He explained that the global hospital ranking is one of the most comprehensive and trusted evaluations in the healthcare sector, assessing hospital performance through detailed quality indicators. Recent data and reports show that the UAE continues to expand its healthcare investments, with significant growth expected in the coming years. Healthcare spending in the UAE is projected to reach approximately Dhs151 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7%, driven by investments in infrastructure and services. A report by the Ministry of Economy anticipates that healthcare spending will reach $ 26 billion by 2028, while the UAE aims to invest Dhs118 billion in the healthcare sector by 2027, focusing on infrastructure development and enhancing public-private partnerships. In a major development in 2024, the UAE Cabinet approved a decision to introduce a health insurance system for workers registered with private sector institutions and domestic workers in the UAE who do not already have health insurance. The decision mandates private sector employers and sponsors of domestic workers to pay for the insurance coverage of their registered employees starting Jan.1, 2025. The Cabinet also adopted the National Policy for Improving Women's Health to ensure women have access to the highest standards of preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative healthcare services. WAM
