The 3 Dubai taxi rules that will give you a free trip
If you're one of the millions of people taking a Dubai taxi trip every year, you may not have realised that your ride could have been completely free. A series of rules and regulations are posted on the windows of every single Roads and Transport Authority taxi in Dubai, outlining the dos and don'ts of riding – and the conditions for when a ride is free. Dubai taxi rides are completely free of charge in three different instances, but the rules are easily missed if you like to bury your head in your phone or take in the city scenery. Firstly, keep an eye on the meter. If it isn't being operated properly, then you're entitled to a free trip. The fee on the meter should increase at a steady rate depending on how many kilometres you've travelled. And if you've ever taken a trip and the driver has refused to use a credit card machine or the credit card machine then you should know that you don't need to find an ATM. Instead, you're allowed to get a free trip. There may be a disagreement at this point, but make sure to point towards the sticker stuck to the window next to where you're sitting, and you'll be fine. If you're in a cab, then there is strictly no eating, drinking or smoking allowed, and you must not bring any pets with you either. Passengers are also informed that they're liable for any Salik toll gate charges, so if you want the driver to avoid going through any of the 10 gates, then you must inform them at the start of your journey. Taxi fares are set at a minimum of Dhs12 with a waiting charge of 50 fils per minute. Trips are cheaper if you're picked up on the street as opposed to booking through an app. Between 6am and 10pm, fares start at Dhs5, whereas online bookings start at Dhs8 during the same time frame. At night, street pickup starts at Dhs5.50 between 10pm and 6am while online bookings are priced from Dhs9. The RTA also has a handy equation available to explain your total taxi fare. Your final fare takes into consideration the base fare, kilometre charge, waiting time charges, a Dhs20 fee if you pass Sharjah, additional fees if you enter port Rashid, any applicable Salik fees and any applicable DARB (Abu Dhabi's version of Salik) fees. Gang jailed in Dubai for stealing Dhs9,900 from a man's account after forcing him to reveal bank details over phone
Dubai Misdemeanour and minor offences court sentenced a five-member Asian gang to one month in jail, to be followed by deportation, and fined them Dhs9,900 for defrauding an Arab national by impersonating a police officer and stealing funds from his bank account. The case dates back to March 2025, when the victim filed a report with Dubai Police, stating he had lost Dhs9,900 after receiving a call from one of the suspects claiming he was a police officer tasked by the Central Bank to update his bank account details. The gangster threatened the victim that his account would be frozen if the victim did not disclose his card details and PIN so the victim complied, only to discover the amounts were withdrawn moments later. Dubai Police's Cybercrime Unit found out that the gangsters used a residential apartment in Deira as a hub for targeting victims across the UAE. Investigations revealed that smart phones used to contact victims and commit crimes were found hidden in plastic bags and shoes. Forensic analysis affirmed one device was used in the victim's case. On being questioned, the gangsters admitted to impersonating police, bank, or government officials, tricking victims into revealing bank details. They confessed that they were recruited and directed by a fugitive who had rented the apartment for them before fleeing the country. They added that he used to contact them via phone, instructing them to collect victims' bank card details and PINs. Once the data was obtained, he used to withdraw money from the victims' accounts and send the gang members monthly payments ranging from Dhs1,800 to Dhs2,000.
