No, your Costco card cannot be used as a substitute for a REAL ID. What Tennesseans should know about travel

While a Costco membership has multiple perks, including bulk discounts and savings on gas, there are a few things the card can't provide. For example, access to board domestic flights or certain federal facilities, unlike the REAL ID. Since the May 7 implementation date, travelers in Tennessee and across the United States have relied on REAL ID — or other acceptable forms of identification — to pass through security and travel domestically. Some, however, have opted for other methods of identification, which has led the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to recently debunk the rumor that customers' warehouse club cards can substitute for a REAL ID. "We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not," wrote the administration in a post to social media. Despite some membership cards displaying a star and digital options displaying a photo, that doesn't qualify the cards as a valid form of identification. In order to fly, travelers must have either a REAL ID, a valid passport or another federally issued photo ID. As previously reported by USA TODAY, TSA Pacific spokesperson Lorie Dankers told SFGate that the rumor of Costco cards being accepted as official identification pops up every year or so. When people try to use their warehouse club cards at airports, for instance, it could lead to delays and travel headaches, she added. No — Tennesseans are not required to obtain a REAL ID compliant license or identification credential. A REAL ID is not necessary to drive, vote, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, access hospitals, visit the post office, access federal courts or apply for or receive federal benefits such as social security or veterans' benefits. If you don't have a REAL ID, here is the complete list of TSA acceptable IDs: State-issued Enhanced Driver's License U.S. passport U.S. passport card DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents Permanent resident card Border crossing card An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs). HSPD-12 PIV card Foreign government-issued passport Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card Transportation worker identification credential U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766) U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) Yes — Tennesseans can still obtain a REAL ID, with or without an appointment, although walk-in applicants should anticipate potentially long wait times. 'Like entering a bureaucratic purgatory.' Why this Nashville DMV location was ranked as one of the worst in the U.S.

While the DMV is often synonymous with packed waiting rooms, long lines and dreaded paperwork, some locations fare significantly worse than others, according to a recent study from Sudoku Bliss. The study examined reviews from over 100 DMV locations across 30 major U.S. cities to identify where wait times are longest and customer frustration is most palpable. Two Tennessee cities were included among the top three worst DMV locations in the United States — Memphis (No. 2) and Nashville (No. 3). Per the study, negative reviews make up nearly 30% of all reviews at the Nashville DMV location on Hart Lane. Also ranking prominently among the top five was Tennessee's neighbor to the east — North Carolina, particularly the city of Charlotte. The Queen City accounted for three of the five worst-performing DMV locations in the country. Where to live in Nashville: These Nashville neighborhoods are the best to call home in 2025, according to World Atlas The Hart Lane location is rated a 2.6 on Google, with the majority of reviews citing long wait times, inefficiency and disorganization. Additionally, the same location was ranked as the second least improved location over the past year. "Dante himself could not have imagined such torment," read one Google review. "Stepping into the Hart Lane Driver Services Center is like entering a bureaucratic purgatory, designed to test your patience and crush your spirit." Charlotte, North Carolina (West Arrowood Road) Memphis, Tennessee (Mullins Station Road) Nashville, Tennessee (Hart Lane) Charlotte, North Carolina ( Executive Circle) Charlotte, North Carolina (Brookshire Boulervard) Portland, Oregon (North Hayden Meadows Drives) Denver, Colorado (South Monaco Street Parkway) Austin, Texas (Ridgepoint Drive) Denver, Colorado (Peoria Street) Portland, Oregon (N.E. 181st Avenue) In March 2025, the Sudoku Online team analyzed Google reviews from the top 10 DMV locations in the 30 most populous U.S. cities, excluding non-DMV sites and those with fewer than 150 reviews — resulting in 140 locations. To assess negative customer experiences, especially related to long wait times, the team analyzed only reviews rated 3 stars or lower, then counted mentions of keywords like 'long,' 'slow,' 'wait,' 'bad,' 'horrible,' 'terrible,' 'delay,' 'crowded,' 'packed,' and 'inefficient.' Each DMV's score was calculated by dividing the number of these negative reviews by its total review count, creating a ranking of the worst and best-performing locations. A city-wide DMV score out of 100 was then derived by averaging the rankings of all DMV locations within that city. Trends over time were also examined using review timestamps and low-star ratings to highlight cities where DMV experiences are improving or declining. Only locations with at least 25 negative reviews in 2023 were included in the analysis. Diana Leyva covers trending news and service journalism for The Tennessean. With NOAA radio software down and incoming storms, here's how to get Nashville weather warnings

Amid a severe weather threat across Middle Tennessee, NOAA weather radios will be down due to scheduled maintenance of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) — a tool used daily by forecasters at the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. During the upgrade, all NOAA weather radio transmitters maintained by the Nashville office will be offline until May 21. This includes transmitters serving Clarksville, Waverly, Nashville, Centerville, Lobelville, Clifton, Lawrenceburg, Hickman, LaFayette, Cookeville, and Spencer. Here's what to know about the software and how else you can receive alerts during periods of severe weather. The weather service uses AWIPS software to display and integrate weather and water information and to send life-saving information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public. However, due to scheduled maintenance on the software, NOAA radios will be offline. Additionally, local graphical forecasts, climate data and probabilistic maps hosted on will not be updated. This includes all graphics on the Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook and Probabilistic DSS webpages. "No impacts to core services (forecast products, watches warnings and advisories) are expected as we'll have our backup offices involved in covering those functions," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Ryan Husted. Despite NOAA weather radios being offline, there are still plenty of ways to remain weather aware in the Nashville area. Here's how: MEANS (Metro Emergency Alert and Notification System) - MEANS is a public safety program that provides you critical information in a variety of situations, such as weather notifications, criminal activity and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods. Sign up online at or download the MEANS mobile app, available on the App Store of Google Play. Nashville Office of Emergency Management - Follow the Nashville Office of Emergency Management on Facebook and X to stay up to date and engaged. Although social media isn't always the most reliable way of receiving weather updates, the office routinely posts critical information. National Weather Service - For the most up-to-date weather updates, visit the Nashville office of the weather service on their official website and follow their social media channels. Be sure to enable push notifications to receive timely alerts. Tornado sirens - Davidson County's tornado warning siren system is designed to alert people when a tornado warning is issued for any part of the county. A tornado warning indicates that a tornado has either been detected by Doppler radar or visually confirmed by a trained spotter. This Middle Tennessee car show was named one of the best in the U.S. See why

A Middle Tennessee car show has been named as one of the best in the country by USA TODAY. The Triple Crown of Rodding, held at the Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, was named among the top ten car shows in the country as part of USA TODAY 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards 2025, which aim to feature the "very best in travel, food, drink, and lifestyle." This was the car show's third consecutive year being featured. The annual car show placed among the top 3 and claimed the No. 2 spot, beating out car shows in Minnesota, Florida and Kentucky. Mississippi's Cruisin' The Coast car show, considered 'America's largest block party,' took the No. 1 spot. Held every September at the Nashville Superspeedway, the Triple Crown of Rodding showcases hot rods, customs, classics, and muscle through 1972, as well as American-made trucks through 1998. The event features meet-and-greets with industry celebrities, a bustling vendor midway, and live music. In 2025, the event will be held Sept. 5-6.
