From addiction to advocacy: A man's journey of hope
Guwahati: Once ensnared by the chains of drug addiction, Diganta Baruah intimately understands the devastating impact of substance abuse. It stripped him of his dignity, family, relationships, and hope.
Reflecting on the darkest chapter of his life, Baruah recalls how his addiction left him destitute, isolated from loved ones, and convinced he had nothing left to live for.
Starting his descent at the tender age of 14, Baruah's addiction spiraled out of control in Bombay. Despite multiple rehab attempts, he admits to relapsing several times. "It took me a while to understand addiction and accept myself as an addict. By the time I did, I had lost so much and felt utterly helpless," Baruah shares.
Today, Baruah's story is one of resilience, determination, and newfound purpose. Having clawed his way out of addiction, he now collaborates with the non-profit organization 'Kripa Foundation,' dedicating himself to helping young people still ensnared by addiction. "Sometimes they come to us willingly; other times, we must intervene to bring them to safety. Our mission is simple — to offer them a second chance to reclaim their lives before it's too late.

Society often views addicts as hopeless or morally flawed, but this perception must change. Addiction is an illness, not a reflection of character, and like any illness, it can be treated and overcome," Baruah says.
He emphasizes that conviction and discipline are as crucial as empathy in the recovery journey. "Every morning at the shelter begins with cleaning duties and group discussions. Then, they engage in skill-based activities followed by therapy sessions.
This holistic routine ensures they are mentally prepared to face the world once they leave the rehab center. Life is precious, and everyone has responsibilities toward their family.
Opportunities will arise throughout life, and they must not be squandered on substances," he adds.
"This isn't charity. It's about equipping them with tools to stand on their own. I know how easy it is to relapse even after rehab, so discipline is non-negotiable here," he adds.
