Dubai Hosts SAMENA Summit Urging Inclusive and Sustainable Digital Transformation
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, inaugurated the SAMENA Council Leaders' Summit 2025 in Dubai today, calling for smarter, inclusive, and human-centric digital transformation across the region. Held under the patronage of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), the summit brought together policymakers, regulators, and tech leaders from across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa to address the evolving digital landscape. In his keynote, Sheikh Nahyan declared that digital transformation in the UAE is no longer an ambition but a lived reality, crediting the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He cited the UAE's early adoption of AI governance, digital skills investment, and the establishment of the world's first AI ministry as signs of its proactive strategy. He highlighted advancements in 5G, AI, and cloud infrastructure as key enablers reshaping sectors from healthcare to finance. Yet, he cautioned that global volatility, including protectionist trade policies, poses serious risks to supply chains and emerging market growth. 'Disruption also presents opportunity,' Sheikh Nahyan said, urging the region to strengthen innovation ecosystems, invest in future skills, and promote digital cooperation. He identified artificial intelligence as the defining force of the era—transformative yet fraught with ethical, security, and workforce challenges. Reflecting on the summit's theme—'Intelligent & Sustainable Transformation of Digital Economies'—he stressed that digital success hinges on responsible application and social impact. Throughout the day, the summit served as a high-level forum for regional collaboration, reinforcing the need for unified digital progress and resilient infrastructure to shape a secure, inclusive digital future. The annual event is expected to bring together renowned leaders, policymakers, regulators, investors, and industry executives from across the SA-ME-NA region, Central Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and ASEAN. Organizers revealed that global and regional ICT and industry development bodies, including ITU, DCO, and GSMA, will also participate. The Summit will be held under the chief-patronage of the UAE's Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). It is being organized with strategic industry collaboration from Huawei, Mobily, WBBA, stc, ZTE, and 7 Generation, alongside members of the SAMENA Council. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, collaboration, and investment to accelerate intelligent and secure AI integration within 5G environments. This year's theme, 'Intelligent & Sustainable Transformation of Digital Economies,' reflects a commitment to advancing smart, inclusive growth across SAMENA Council markets. The Summit aims to support discussions ahead of major global stakeholder events, including the G20 Summit. Key points revealed include: High-profile roundtables such as the G20 Inter-Ministerial Roundtable, organized with South Africa's Ministry of Communications. The Multi-TRA Forum, chaired by TDRA-UAE, which will explore strategies for leveraging 5G to enhance municipal and smart city services in the GCC. In addition, a roundtable on Space Development and WRC-27, and another focused on Cybersecurity, will be held. It was reported that the Summit will also examine the role of policies, regulations, and investments in fostering digital ecosystems. Organizers stated that the Summit will provide a platform for governments, businesses, and regulators to align efforts for inclusive digital advancement. With tools like the Digital Economy Navigator (DEN), participants will assess how to guide cross-border digital progress. Stakeholders will explore the adoption of 5G, 5G-Advanced, AI, and related technologies across industries and economic sectors. Ultimately, the Leaders' Summit 2025 will serve as a catalyst for collaboration and innovation to ensure digital transformation is inclusive, intelligent, and sustainable.
