Kerala cabinet approves ordinance for permanent V-C at digital university

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In light of the recent court directives, the state government is all set to go for a permanent vice chancellor at the Digital University of Kerala (DUK). The cabinet on Wednesday gave nod to bring in amendments to the 2021 Digital University Act through an ordinance. Amendments will be introduced in sub-sections (3), (4) and (6) of Section 11 of the Act based on the 2018 UGC regulations and the court directives. The move comes five days after Governor Rajendra Arlekar reappointed Ciza Thomas as the university's interim V-C. The cabinet has recommended the governor to promulgate the ordinance. As part of eradicating extreme poverty in the state, the cabinet has also decided to provide relaxation of the norms to eligible people in municipal corporations and rural areas with an urban nature. The minimum area to apply for financial aid for home construction under the scheme has been reduced from 3 cents to 2 cents. If revenue land or other options are unavailable, the applicants can avail of up to `2 lakh. key decisions

Digital university, Tata Elxsi enter into MoU

The Digital University of Kerala (DUK) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Tata Elxsi Limited to collaborate on technology-driven initiatives and cybersecurity projects. The agreement was officially exchanged on the university campus on July 4 by Vice-Chancellor in-charge Ciza Thomas and Tata Elxsi vice president K.P. Sreekumar. This strategic partnership aims to foster capacity building, knowledge exchange and the joint development of innovative technology solutions. As part of the collaboration, Tata Elxsi and DUK will work together on a Ministry of Electronics and IT-funded project for automated security product development, an official release stated. DUK Registrar A. Mujeeb, Dean (Academics) Asharaf S., and Project Investigator & Chair, School of Computer Science and Engineering Preetam Mukherjee were also present on the occasion.

Govt to launch ‘Freedom Square' at IT park Phase IV

T'puram: In a major push to promote innovation and youth entrepreneurship , Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), in collaboration with department of tourism, is all set to roll out the first-of-its-kind ' Freedom Square ' project at Technopark Phase IV in Pallippuram. The project is designed to become a vibrant, round-the-clock co-creation hub for students, startups, investors and industry leaders. According to KSUM, the project will become a reality in the current financial year. The inaugural facility is set to come up on five acres of land owned by tourism department, located near Digital University of Kerala. It will be an open space with a building so that they can spend a whole day and night with events and recreation. According to Ashok Kurian Panjikkaran, business head, KSUM, Freedom Squares are not just buildings; they are movements. "We want to give young minds a space where they can brainstorm freely, build on ideas and engage directly with mentors, corporate leaders and investors. This initiative ties in with our mission to transform Kerala into a knowledge society. We hope to start the first such facility in Technopark Phase-IV before March 2026," he said. The centre will be open 24/7 and include coworking spaces, meeting rooms, dormitories, recreational areas and high-speed internet connectivity. It will also act as a nodal centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centres that function in various educational institutions across Kerala. Tourism department's involvement is intended to add cultural and aesthetic value to the space while encouraging community participation and social innovation. Tourism features include a VR-powered experience zone, amphitheatre, gaming arenas, and cultural integration spaces showcasing Kerala's heritage. Wellness facilities, including a mini hospital and meditation areas, will further enhance the visitor experience.
