Rajkummar Rao's ‘Maalik' set to redefine gangster thrillers with wit and grit

Pen Movies has ignited fresh curiosity with the announcement of Maalik, a Hindi-language gangster action thriller slated for release on July 11, 2025. Starring the versatile Rajkummar Rao, the film promises a dark yet clever exploration of the underworld, served with a twist of wit and innovation. The official teaser drop on social media came with the cryptic line: 'Podcast ki nagri mein ab dikhega Raj. #Maalik se milne aa jaana 11 July ko sirf cinema gharon mein!' — blending menace with meta-humor. Accompanying the post is a sharp, podcast-style promo featuring Rajkummar Rao in a double role: one as himself, the other as the titular Maalik, delivering layered dialogue that balances menace with charisma. Directed by Pulkit and produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, Maalik features an impressive ensemble cast including Manushi Chhillar, Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Medha Shankr. The narrative unfolds across gritty North Indian landscapes — shot in Lucknow, Varanasi, and Unnao — adding authenticity to its visual depth. The music, too, is already making waves. The singles 'Naamumkin' and 'Dil Thaam Ke' — composed by Sachin-Jigar with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and vocals by Akasa and MC Square — are gaining traction for their edgy sound. Cinematographer Anuj Dhawan, production designer Rita Ghosh, and costume designer Niharika Bhasin Khan have worked to give Maalik a visually distinct identity, matching the film's genre-bending tone. With its sharp writing, stylized promos, and Rajkummar Rao at the helm, Maalik is shaping up to be more than a typical gangster flick. Expect humor, suspense, and surprises when the Maalik takes over theatres this July.

Huma's a natural — a joy to work with: Choreographer Vijay Ganguly on Huma Qureshi's performance in Dil Thaam Ke

Huma Qureshi in a still from Dil Thaam Ke and (right) Vijay Ganguly After Monica, O My Darling, Huma Qureshi is back in a bold, energetic avatar with Dil Thaam Ke — a high-octane dance number that showcases her flair for performance-driven choreography. Backed by stylised visuals and confident moves, the track has quickly caught the audience's attention. The song marks her second collaboration with choreographer Vijay Ganguly , who says working with her has been effortless and creatively fulfilling. 'Huma is one of the easiest actors to work with. We've done two songs together now, and both turned out well,' he shares. While Monica carried an old-school charm and retro vibe, Dil Thaam Ke leans more into narrative and character expression. 'The energy she brings is evident on screen — her expressions and body language are instinctive,' says Vijay, and adds, 'During Monica, she was a little unsure in rehearsals at first but gave it her all. And when it came to emoting, she hardly needed direction — she just got it.' For Dil Thaam Ke, the team raised the bar with more demanding choreography. 'We decided to make the choreography more challenging. When Huma saw it, she said, 'Let's take this as a challenge and do it'. And she did,' he recalls. One standout moment in the song involves her character approaching Malik with a mix of curiosity and confidence. 'We crafted a scene where she makes the first move — and she played it with just a smile and a glance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo That small moment added depth,' says Vijay. Dil Thaam Ke: Huma Qureshi song in Maalik leaves internet wondering why every dance number looks like Aaj Ki Raat

The new track from Rajkummar Rao-starrer Maalik, titled Dil Thaam Ke, was released on Friday. Picturised on Huma Qureshi, the peppy track sees the actor dancing up a storm in a shed with several other female dancers. Rajkummar also appears, but barely shakes a leg with her. Fans reacted to the song and gave a thumbs up for Huma, even as comparisons with Stree 2 song Aaj Ki Raat also cropped up. (Also read: Maalik teaser: Rajkummar Rao is finally not a small-town boy looking for a bride, turns ruthless gangster. Rajkummar, who plays a gangster, enters the shed with his men, which catches the attention of Huma. Even as she tried to tag him along to dance and loosen up a bit, he refused. Reacting to the song, a fan said, 'Huma can act and even dance so well. So good to see her.' A second fan noted, 'Huma Qureshi is such an underrated performer. What a look & those moves.' However, many users also noted the similar trend of dance numbers after the huge success of Tamannaah Bhatia's Aaj Ki Raat track from Stree 2. A user commented, 'The music, the dance steps and the whole vibe of the song are quite similar to Aj ki Raat maza husan ka song from Stree 2.' Another said, 'Why do I feel Raees vibes?' This was made in reference to the styling of Rajkummar's character, which looked quite similar to Shah Rukh Khan's style in the film Raees. 'Why is this song similar to Laila Mai Laila and even Aaj Ki Raat? Can't help,' noted another user in the comments. Produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakraman, Maalik is set to be a gritty tale of power, loyalty, betrayal, and one man's rise to rule it all. Pulkit, who is known for TV series like Bhakshak and Bose Dead/Alive, has directed the film, which will be released on July 11.
