Vengsarkar Donates 39-Year-Old Treasure From Kapil Dev's Iconic Triumph: 'When People See...'
Last Updated: Dilip Vengsarkar donated his Test sweater and blazer to the Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum, celebrating Mumbai's cricket legacy. He wore the sweater during the 1986 Lord's Test. Dilip Vengsarkar, former India captain and one of the country's finest batters, has shown a special gesture to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) by donating his Test sweater and blazer to the soon-to-be-inaugurated Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum. The museum, dedicated to celebrating Mumbai's glorious cricketing legacy, is set to be inaugurated on Saturday, August 23. The sweater holds immense historical significance as Vengsarkar wore it during the famous Lord's Test in June 1986, where he scored an unbeaten 126 runs against England. His innings laid the foundation for India's five-wicket victory under Kapil Dev's captaincy, a match still remembered as one of Indian cricket's most iconic overseas wins. What Did Dilip Vengsarkar Say? Speaking to Mid-Day, Vengsarkar explained his decision to donate the memorabilia. He shared, 'I have given MCA the sweater I wore during the 1986 Lord's Test. I had worn it throughout the England tour. I have also given my India blazer, but I don't remember exactly in which series I used that blazer. In the future as well, I will give my bats and other gear to the museum." Vengsarkar, who represented India from the mid-1970s until 1992, expressed his deep bond with MCA. 'Right from the age of 12 when I played Giles Shield till I retired [from international cricket] in 1992, I played all MCA matches, so Mumbai Cricket Association means everything to me. And right from the beginning, every official has supported me hugely, whether it is school, college, university, office, club cricket or while playing for Mumbai and India. And we played for Mumbai with a lot of pride. Whatever I've learnt is because of Mumbai cricket," he added. The 69-year-old veteran, who accumulated 6,868 Test runs and 3,508 ODI runs for India, has previously donated memorabilia, including a helmet and blazer, to the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association's museum in Indore. Vengsarkar believes such contributions inspire young cricketers. 'When people see an international cricketer's bats, gloves, pads, sweaters, or a fast bowler's shoes, etc, they will surely be motivated to work hard," said Vengsarkar. The 1986 Lord's Test remains memorable not just for Vengsarkar's century but also for Kapil Dev's all-round brilliance. The Indian captain claimed four wickets in the second innings and then sealed the chase of 134 with a blistering 23 not out off just 10 balls, hitting four fours and a six. India went on to win the series 2-0, having also triumphed at Headingley. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Not Virat Kohli & Sourav Ganguly! These 5 Indians Have Won Asia Cup As Captain
1/5 Sunil Gavaskar etched his name in history by captaining India to victory in the inaugural Asia Cup held in Sharjah in 1984, where India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan and laid the foundation for their regional dominance, marking the beginning of a glorious chapter in continental cricket supremacy. In 1988, India once again proved their supremacy in Asian cricket when Dilip Vengsarkar led the team to the title, continuing the momentum from the inaugural win and stamping India's authority over its continental rivals, thereby reinforcing the team's growing reputation as the powerhouse of subcontinental cricket. 3/5 Mohammad Azharuddin became the first Indian captain to lift the Asia Cup twice, guiding the team to victories in 1991 and 1995, both times overcoming Sri Lanka in decisive clashes, and cementing India's position as the most successful side in the competition's early years with back-to-back dominant campaigns. After a gap of 15 years, MS Dhoni restored India's Asia Cup glory in 2010 by defeating Sri Lanka, and then again in 2016, when the tournament switched to the T20 format, showing his adaptability as a leader while reaffirming India's dominance in both ODI and T20 cricket. Rohit Sharma stepped in as captain in 2018 and delivered immediate success by leading India to another Asia Cup triumph, showcasing his leadership qualities in the absence of Virat Kohli, while displaying calmness and tactical sharpness, which eventually strengthened his credentials as one of India's most successful leaders.

Would have told Virat Kohli to retire after England Tests: Ex-India chief selector
Former India captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has said the national selectors should have persuaded Virat Kohli to delay his retirement from Test cricket until after the recent five-match series in announced his decision to retire from Test cricket just days before the start of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, shortly after Rohit Sharma also retired from Tests. Their absence left India with a fresh leadership group under Shubman Gill, who impressed both as captain and batsman, steering the side to a 2-2 who served as chief selector from 2006 to 2008, said Kohli's experience could have been crucial in the series. "If I were the Indian chief selector, I would have persuaded Virat to bid goodbye to Test cricket after playing the England series. We needed his class and experience in this series," Vengsarkar told The Times of India. Kohli's record in England has been mixed. After a disappointing debut tour in 2014, he returned in 2018 to score 655 runs as captain. However, he struggled during the 2021-22 visit, which included the World Test Championship final. Explaining his choice, he said: "I just coloured my beard two days ago. You know it's time when you are colouring your beard every four days."Neither Kohli nor Rohit has played competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 season. With India not scheduled to play ODI cricket until the end of the year in Australia and South Africa, their extended absence has added to speculation about their international retired with 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, placing him fourth on India's all-time list behind Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar. As captain, he led in 68 Tests, winning 40 - the most by any Indian skipper and the fourth-best in is expected to return to action in a three-match ODI series against Australia in October, followed by a home series against South Africa.- EndsYou May Also Like
