‘Shubman Gill not scared to poke the bear': Vaughan hypes India skipper for standing up for his teammates
Michael Vaughan has been impressed with Shubman Gill's bold leadership in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, noting how the young Indian skipper hasn't hesitated to challenge the opposition or stir things up when needed. The 25-year-old took the captaincy charge from Rohit Sharma ahead of the England tour and has entered the transition phase under him. The young Indian team has put up a solid fightback so far. Shubman and Co. are currently trailing the series 1-2, but they have managed to push every match to the final day. Shubman Gill has put up a solid show as captain in the England series so far.(@BCCI X) Shubman has silenced his critics in emphatic fashion, leading from the front with the bat and amassing 700 runs in the series so far. His prolific form has put to rest doubts over his red-ball credentials that surfaced before the England tour, reinforcing his stature as a reliable Test batter. Meanwhile, Vaughan lauded Gill for standing up for his teammates and being ready to do whatever it takes to exercise his authority as skipper. "I like to see a young captain with a little bit of authority. I've actually loved the way that he has spoken. He's not been scared to kind of poke the bear. You've got to stand up for your teammates, for what you believe as a team. So far, in Shubman Gill, I am seeing a captain that is willing to do that," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz. In the Manchester Test, India mounted a determined fightback after trailing by 311 runs in their second innings. Displaying remarkable grit, they ended day four at 425 for four after 143 overs, with standout performances from Shubman Gill (103), KL Rahul (90), Ravindra Jadeja (107*), and Washington Sundar (101*) anchoring the revival. 'We have got a bona fide superstar as a Test captain': Dinesh Karthik Veteran India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik highlights Gill's calm yet assertive presence and how the young skipper backed his instincts and motivated teammates to push for centuries, calling him a 'bona fide superstar' in the making. "He came in as a young captain and people were not sure how it is going to pan out, but I can tell you, we have got a bona fide superstar as a Test captain because of the guts that he is showing as a batter, because of how much he stands his ground about what he believes in. The last 10-15 minutes, the way it unfolded, he was just standing there in the balcony, literally poker face saying, 'Get out there, get your hundreds'," Dinesh Karthik said.

"India Cricket Is In Safe Hands": Shubman Gill Receives Big Praise After Record Ton
Former Indian wicketkeeper and batter Dinesh Karthik praised India's Test captain Shubman Gill after his fourth hundred in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Gill carved his name alongside legends as he smashed his fourth century of the series--a superbly composed 103 on the final day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on Sunday. While India still trailed by 88 runs at the time of his dismissal, Gill had already created history. In terms of overall World Test Championship (WTC) numbers, Gill's record continues to grow stronger. He now has nine centuries in the WTC era, equalling former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's tally--although Gill has done it in just 67 innings compared to Rohit's 69. "This young boy from Punjab, setting it alight in England. There were questions about him as a batter, and he's put that to bed. He's been outstanding. He's taken to leadership like a duck to water. India cricket is in safe hands," Karthik said on air, as quoted from Sky Sports. As the series stands, Gill has already amassed an unbeaten 722 runs, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 against England at home just last year. Only Sunil Gavaskar has scored more in a single Test series for India -- his 774 runs in the 1971 away tour of the West Indies and 732 at home in 1978/79. With the fifth Test still to come, Gill has every chance of surpassing both of Gavaskar's legendary marks. Coming to the match, Gill's exceptional innings of 103 keeps his side in the game as his side posted 223 runs with the loss of four wickets at the end of the first session on Day 5 against England. At the stroke of lunch, the visitors are 223/4, with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten at the crease. The Shubman Gill-led side still trails the Three Lions' total of 669 by 88 runs. Team India started the first session of the fifth and final day of the fourth Test from 174/2 with Gill (78*) and opener KL Rahul (87*) unbeaten at the crease.

'Did He Get His Captaincy Right?': Dinesh Karthik Questions Shubman Gill's Leadership
Dinesh Karthik has reviewed Shubman Gill's captaincy, noting his enjoyment and control despite strategic errors. Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has said that although Shubman Gill is probably enjoying the fact that he is the captain and can control the narrative in multiple ways, he didn't always get his strategies right and would look back on certain decisions and ponder over them. Coming on the back of a string of poor scores, including one in the first innings of the Manchester Test, Gill had a huge role to play with the score reading 0/2 in the second innings. Gill stood tall for the team when needed, responding with his fourth half-century of the series. He finished unbeaten on 78 runs off 167 balls to keep India alive in the contest ahead of the final day. 'I think he's enjoying the fact that he is a captain because he can control the narrative in a lot of ways. Did he get his captaincy right? I don't think so. There are areas where he will look back and say, 'I could have done this better,'" Karthik said while speaking on Cricbuzz. 'Starting from the playing XI he chose, to the kind of bowling changes he made," Karthik added. Gill has scored 697 runs in eight innings in the series till now at a stunning average of 99.57. The skilled duo of Gill and KL Rahul could have taken more risks against left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, but both did play some sizzling drives against the pacers. England tried plenty of things in the final session, including peppering the well-set pair with short balls, but Rahul and Gill were unfazed. England have targeted Gill's pads, sensing a weakness, but the Indian skipper found a way to survive a lethal spell from Jofra Archer. In the afternoon session, Gill overcame initial jitters for a hard-fought half-century, leading India's show of resistance in a wicketless afternoon session to leave the visitors at 86/2. England pacers, especially Archer, hurled inswingers into Gill's pads, but the Indian skipper was able to survive those testing moments before playing sumptuous strokes. Gill had the luck on his side as well, as he was dropped by Dawson off Brydon Carse at backward point on 46. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Microphone blunder! Nasser Hussain roasts Dinesh Karthik on-air during Old Trafford Test
Nasser Hussain and Dinesh Karthik Former England captain Nasser Hussain couldn't resist poking fun at fellow Sky Sports commentator Dinesh Karthik after a light-hearted on-air blunder during Day 4 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Hussain took a playful dig at Karthik for forgetting his microphone during a tea break chat with Ian Ward. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Dinesh Karthik, it's been a long day and you're new to this commentary gig. But I'd say your microphone is equally important,' Hussain said. He then turned his humour toward his former teammate Michael Atherton , adding, 'Don't worry, happens to the best. Atherton once tried to commentate using a coffee cup.' Karthik, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2024, has transitioned into commentary and coaching—now serving as Royal Challengers Bengaluru's batting coach for IPL 2025. On the field, India clawed their way back after a nightmare start to the second innings, when Chris Woakes dismissed both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the opening over. From 0/2, Shubman Gill (78*) and KL Rahul (87*) steadied the innings with an unbroken 174-run stand for the third wicket. Morne Morkel on Jasprit Bumrah's workload and pace, Kuldeep Yadav, and Anshul Kamboj's debut India began their innings trailing by a hefty 311 runs after England racked up a massive 669, powered by Ben Stokes ' commanding 141 off 198 balls—his 14th Test century. India reached 174 for 2 at stumps—still 137 runs behind. Ravindra Jadeja was India's most effective bowler, finishing with four wickets. 'I don't think India can take 90 seconds': DK gives befitting reply to Hussain after ex-England captain found Gill's remark laughable
Former England skipper Nasser Hussain and ex-India batter Dinesh Karthik engaged in a healthy discussion over what Shubman Gill said ahead of the start of the 4th Test in Manchester. read more The intense exchange between India's Shubman Gill and England's Zak Crawley during the Lord's Test's Day 3 continues to spark debate among cricket experts. The incident remains a hot topic of discussion and became a subject of amicable debate between former England captain Nasser Hussain and ex-India batter Dinesh Karthik. The base of the conversation was the recent statement by Gill, who did not mince words when he questioned the hosts' 'spirit of the game' while headlining the episode in the pre-Manchester Test presser. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Yes, a lot of people have been talking about it, so let me just clear the air, once and for all. The English batsmen on that day had seven minutes of play left; they were 90 seconds late to come to the crease — not 10, not 20 — 90 seconds late,' Gill had said in the press conference. Hussain admitted that he could not help but 'laugh' at the statement made by Gill. According to the ex-England captain, India would not have done anything different if they were in England's place. Upon listening to Hussain, DK came up with a fitting reply, stating that India would never get the opportunity to delay the game for 90 seconds. Here's how the exchange went: Nasser Hussain: The umpires were concerned about the light, I think, in the last over. I haven't seen any light metres out there. Dinesh Karthik: I think that's quite clever, that's fine, to just go and put that small little seed in the umpire's mind. Is it okay to, like, especially with the new ball around the corner, and we've seen a couple of collapses for India as well. And that's cheeky. Not a bad idea. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Nasser Hussain: That's what made me laugh about Shubman Gill's press conference, really, about England not being in the spirit of the game by delaying things, and England did delay it. Day three, that one over, it was ridiculous, but every side does it, and India will do it tonight. Why would they want extra overs of Jofra Archer under the lights? Who would? Dinesh Karthik: Difference being, I don't think India can take 90 seconds not wanting to bat, or rather not wanting to come down to bat. I think that's the problem that Shubman Gill said he had. It was just the fact that they came late to take the strike, that he had a problem with. Thrilling start to the fourth Test While the 3rd Test left a lot to be discussed, the series has moved to the 4th Test. Day 1 of the Manchester Test saw India batting first and finishing at 264/4 at Stumps. Besides the wickets, India suffered a huge injury setback in the form of Rishabh Pant. Pant was well-set at 37* when Chris Woakes' deadly yorker struck his right foot. The batter immediately felt the discomfort was taken off the field subsequently. Initial scans have showcased that Pant has sustained a foot fracture.
