LUTA polls: Anitya Gaurav elected LU teachers' body president, Ram Milan gen secy
Anitya Gaurav of Ancient Indian history department was elected as the new president in the Lucknow University Teachers' Association (LUTA) elections held on Saturday, said Prof Dinesh Kumar, the returning officer for the polls. Ram Milan of the commerce department was elected the new LUTA general secretary, he added. Gaurav, who was the LUTA general secretary when the teachers' body polls were last held in 2023, defeated Vineet Kumar Verma by 22 votes. Verma, a mathematics department faculty member, is also a former LUTA president and general secretary. Anitya Gaurav polled 197 votes while Verma managed 175. The new LUTA general secretary Ram Milan got 196 votes, defeating philosophy department's Rajendra Kumar Verma who polled 171 votes. As many as 405 faculty members were voters in the LUTA polls and 389 votes were cast, said returning officer Prof Dinesh Kumar. Meanwhile, CR Gautam, SAA Jafri and Monisha Banerjee won the post of vice president. Akash Asthana, Ashok Kumar and Karuna Shankar Kanaujia will be the new joint secretaries of the LU teachers' body, while Dinesh Yadav is the new treasurer. Sanjay Medhavi defeated Priya to become the representative of management sciences, while Annamali Senthil Kumar, Gaurav Singh and Shyamlesh Kumar Tiwari were elected as arts representatives unopposed. Bharat Kumar, Sangeeta Srivastava and Suchit Swaroop were elected as science representatives unopposed. Others who have won the elections unopposed are Chandrakant Kushwaha, Sanjay Singh Yadav, Alok Kumar and Niharika as commerce, education, fine arts and law representatives respectively. 'I will fulfil the promises I made in my manifesto, including getting promotion committees in the remaining departments, cashless health insurance for dependent children, getting the age limit for cashless health insurance increased to 65 and upto ₹5 lakh, the working conditions of state and central universities to be similar, PhD increments, getting the bar for retirement raised to 65 years. We will begin working as soon as possible with the permission of the election returning officer,' Gaurav said.

Yoga day events at four tourist spots in ASR district
As part of the 'Yogandhra' initiative, the Alluri Sitharama Raju district administration has decided to organise yoga events at four tourist places in the district. At a meeting held in Paderu on Tuesday, District Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar announced that, as per State government directions, yoga sessions will be conducted at Borra, Chaparai, Araku Tribal Museum and Maredumilli, with a minimum participation of 1,000 people at each location. He said the first event will be held on May 29 at the school grounds in Borra, Ananthagiri mandal, with Borra Caves as the focal point. On June 4, yoga sessions will be held at the Araku Tribal Museum in Araku. On the same day, a massive yoga session with the participation of over 5,000 tribals will be organised in the district headquarters. He further stated that they have also decided to organise yoga events at Chaparai Waterfalls in Dumbriguda mandal on June 11 and at Maredumilli Vanavihari on June 17. The Collector has urged the public, people's representatives, tourists, mandal-level officials and their staff to participate in these events. The Collector also instructed District Yoga Nodal Officer M.V.S. Lokeshwara Rao and District Tourism Officer G. Dasu to make necessary arrangements at each location to ensure the smooth conduct of the yoga events. These preparations are in view of the month-long International Yoga Day celebrations leading up to June 21 in Visakhapatnam, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend as a special guest.

Currency exchanger killed, son injured in Rs 12 lakh robbery in Amritsar
1 2 Amritsar: Two unidentified persons, under the pretext of exchanging old and torn notes, entered a shop and attacked a father and his son with a sickle to rob money. The father, Kuldeep Kumar, died in the attack, while his son, Dinesh Kumar, was seriously injured. The attackers fled with Rs 12 lakh from the shop. According to police reports, the incident took place at 12 noon. According to shopkeepers, the father and son have been running the business of exchanging old and torn notes for years. The accused called in the morning, asking for new notes worth Rs 10-12 lakh. When they arrived at the shop, the victims invited them inside. While pretending to count the cash, the attackers suddenly struck Kuldeep Kumar on the neck with a sickle before fleeing with the money. The police are investigating the case and reviewing the footage of the CCTV cameras from the area.

46 Bangladeshi nationals nabbed from Haryana's Sonepat
Sonepat police arrested 46 Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, allegedly staying without any legal documents, during a raid at a brick kiln at Kharkhauda in Sonepat, officials said on Sunday. A spokesperson of the Sonepat police said that the raid was conducted acting on a tip-off. 'Their documents are being checked, and the police officials are ascertaining when and how these people entered India illegally,' he added. Two days ago, Palwal police also arrested 59 Bangladeshi nationals working at a brick kiln without documents. As many as 10 persons, including six men and four women, were arrested in Bhiwani on May 21 and 39, including 11 women and 14 children, were held from Hansi in Hisar. Upon receiving information about illegal Bangladeshis, a police team conducted a surveillance and verification drive in Wazirpur JJ Colony on May 23, which led to the detention of one such person. His interrogation helped the police apprehend eight other Bangladeshi nationals, including a newborn, of the same family who were living in India without valid documents, an official said. They initially claimed Indian nationality but were found to be from Bangladesh, Kurigram district, police said. The apprehended individuals, including a 45-day-old infant, were handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for deportation proceedings.
