Gavin Rossdale keeping everything zen at home, on the road
Gavin Rossdale's home studio is his happy place. 'I love this room,' the English rock star and feng shui enthusiast says over a video call from his Los Angeles abode. Wearing a Harley-Davidson tee with his hair tucked casually but deliberately behind his ears, Rossdale is seated in the corner of a white room with red acoustic panelling. There's a keyboard and a guitar nearby. His workstation is, importantly, facing the door. 'I once had a studio in my old life, where my back was at the top of the stairs. It was really annoying because you'd be playing and waiting for someone to scare you the whole time,' he laughs. The 59-year-old frontman of British rock band Bush has always been particular about his surroundings. 'When I was writing for Sixteen Stone, I lived in an apartment with, like, five people; there was graffiti everywhere, no carpet on the floor, but I still needed it to be tidy,' he says of the band's breakout 1994 album. 'I'd vacuum the hallway because I couldn't stand the dust and the dirt, and once I'd done that, I could be creative. 'When I got into a bit of feng shui, I realized I'm not mental.' Rossdale isn't spending much time at home these days, but he is spending a lot of time in the Bush heyday. The band — which includes Chris Traynor, Corey Britz and Nik Hughes — is in the midst of a global tour supporting Loaded: The Greatest Hits 1994–2023, a career-spanning compilation album released two years ago. The tour stops at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday. Rossdale isn't one for nostalgia and prefers not to dwell on the meanings of songs such as '90s radio mainstays Swallowed, Glycerine, Machinehead, Everything Zen and Comedown he wrote 30 years ago. However, he is looking forward to returning to Canada after a one-off show in Toronto last summer. 'They've given us so much, we have so much history in Canada,' Rossdale says of the country where his band once had to tour as BushX, owing to a copyright snafu with a Canadian band of the same name. 'I like the idea of going to places we haven't been for so long or places we haven't been at all — it's exciting and feels more exotic to go out to places that are off the beaten path.' It's been a minute since the band visited Winnipeg. Bush last played at the arena with Veruca Salt in 1997 and Rossdale performed solo at the Burt in 2009. Attendees at Tuesday's show can expect to hear early hits and songs from newer Bush albums, including 2022's The Art of Survival and the forthcoming I Beat Loneliness, set for release in July. 'My excitement is bubbling over for people to hear it,' Rossdale says, adding the first single, 60 Ways To Forget People, from the band's 10th studio album is sure to be on the setlist. Prior to heading out on the Canadian leg of the Loaded tour, he was spending a few precious weeks at home playing tennis, going for long walks with his dog and cooking for his three sons — whom he shares custody of with his ex-wife, singer Gwen Stefani. In addition to his studio, Rossdale also misses his kitchen while on the road. An avid cook who's taken the hobby to a professional level, he recently released the first season of Dinner with Gavin Rossdale. The cooking and interview show features the musician whipping up charred pineapple and avocado mousse for tennis pro Serena Williams and beef Wellington for singer Tom Jones while chatting (and singing) in Rossdale's sprawling hilltop L.A. mansion. 'I was taken by surprise how I have an affinity for it, and if you see food as a really incredible opportunity to sit and chat about your life, which is what I see it as, it's really fun.' he says. The show is, unfortunately, currently unavailable to stream in Canada. And with proper cooking facilities lacking on the road, Rossdale's usual home-cooked gourmet fare is also unavailable in Canada. 'When I'm in a touring mode, all I know to do is boil eggs and put them in soy sauce and rice wine vinegar to munch on,' he says. Rocker Gavin Rossdale reveals eggs are his secret weapon on tour, here's why
Gavin Rossdale has found success on stage as the lead singer of the band Bush. Now, he's hoping to sizzle in the kitchen. The 59-year-old London-born musician is the host of a new TV series, "Dinner with Gavin Rossdale." The six-episode debut season features celebrity guests such as Serena Williams, Tom Jones and Brooke Shields, who speak about their careers and motivations while enjoying dinner that Rossdale makes for them at his Los Angeles home. It's a change of pace for the Bush frontman, who has spent a good deal of his professional life on the road. Eating healthfully while on tour is "traditionally quite difficult," Rossdale told Fox News Digital, "unless you travel with catering." (See the video at the top of this article.) Traveling from location to location without catering can result in "some dodgy meals on tour," Rossdale said — such as green beans that are "cooked beyond recognition." His go-to food before a concert, Rossdale revealed, is boiled eggs. "I just boil, usually, about three or four eggs, and I just let them sit in soy sauce and rice wine vinegar, a bit of mirin maybe," Rossdale said. He called it "an instant sort of jolt." "I'm a three-egg kind of guy," Rossdale added. In the "Dinner with Gavin Rossdale" trailer, Rossdale reflects on what an American jazz trumpeter once proclaimed. "Miles Davis said that every musician should be able to cook, so I took that as a great inspiration with my love affair with food," Rossdale said. Rossdale told Fox News Digital his interest in cooking really started when he was living on his own. "I didn't have any money, so I had to cook something to eat," he said. Rossdale knew how to make "a bit of a tomato sauce" and, because he lived near a market, shrimp stir-fry. When a good friend who had grown up around the restaurant industry moved in, Rossdale was impressed by his roommate's "big repertoire" and became "super competitive." "I was not going to be left in the dust with my shrimp stir-fry," Rossdale said. He soon developed a "feel for it." "And there's so many things I really don't have a feel for," Rossdale said. "I've put a plate of food together – and people like it." He said he's not sure how he developed his "little secret superpower." But, he added, "I've put a plate of food together – and people like it." Rossdale told Fox News Digital that he recently made chicken tacos for fellow musicians Brent Smith, the lead singer of Shinedown, and Morgan Wade. "I knew that with red cabbage, it's too crunchy," he said. "So, you've got to put vinegar. You've got to kill that. You've got to macerate that. You've got to make it soft." It was "really basic" and "nothing complicated," he confessed. "I didn't reinvent any wheels," Rossdale said. "And I'm not going to get any prizes, and no one's going to get me in their Hall of Fame for that. But they liked it."

Gavin Rossdale's desire to be a good dad led rock star to the kitchen
Gavin Rossdale has made some career adjustments to ensure he's a good dad to his four kids. During an interview with Fox News Digital, Rossdale explained that his new cooking show, "Dinner With Gavin Rossdale," came about because he wanted a way to work without leaving his Hollywood Hills home or his kids. "My show came about because of a combination of things. I really wanted to stay home and not have to travel. You know, I live with my three boys half the time, so I didn't want to always travel to buy them dinner," he said. Rossdale admitted he thought that was "crazy" so he's "got to try and have a job you can just do from home." He shares three sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo, with Gwen Stefani, and his oldest, Daisy Lowe, with Pearl Lowe. The Bush frontman noted that the "bigger reason" why he decided to launch "Dinner with Gavin Rossdale" is because he didn't feel like he had "a voice" outside his band and the success he found from that career. "I just felt like, you know, I have a profile, I have a band. I've had a lot of success but not much voice. So I thought, why not go out in some kind of glory and be yourself and sort of have your own voice? Because I felt like I was bizarrely voiceless unless I was singing a song." "My show came about because of a combination of things. I really wanted to stay home and not have to travel." Rossdale admitted he is also "terrified" of his children following in his footsteps and becoming musicians. "Well, Daisy, the eldest, she's not. She's doing some sort of fashion consulting. But with Kingston and Zuma, my two middle, I'm not even sure if I'm still the best guitar player in the house. It's kind of annoying to be honest, they are really good, and they're just getting better all the time, and they seem to have more time to practice than I do, and they're just so into it. WATCH: Gavin Rossdale shares inspiration behind new cooking show "I'm terrified for them because I don't really know what that means to have a career in music anymore, and I find it really confusing, and I've been in it for a long time," Rossdale said. The English musician said being young is about taking chances and putting yourself outside your comfort zone. "I'm terrified for them because I don't really know what that means to have a career in music anymore, and I find it really confusing, and I've been in it for a long time." "I should, as an adult, be looking and going, 'Your choices are crazy. They're not based in reality.' But no, that's not my job. My job is to sort of encourage them to go out into the world, be independent and be strong and get themselves out there," Rossdale said. A fond memory Rossdale has of his children following their passions is his youngest son, Apollo, sitting down while his dad cooks dinner and belts out five songs. "It's really, really incredible," Rossdale said. When it comes to co-parenting, Rossdale doesn't have the secret to success. He told Fox News Digital to "call me" when the secret to successful co-parenting is found. The musician's latest project, "Dinner with Gavin Rossdale," premiered on Feb. 13 on VIZIO. The cooking show is set in his Los Angeles home and includes stars such as Serena Williams, Common, and Selma Blair dining at Rossdale's table. WATCH: Gavin Rossdale admits he's 'terrified' that his kids are pursuing careers in music Rossdale personally cooks a three-course meal for his guests while they indulge in conversation. Another A-lister that has dined at Rossdale's table is Brooke Shields. The supermodel's intelligence surprised the star. "She's incredibly smart. I didn't go in there thinking she wasn't incredibly smart. But when you interact with someone, it's whip-smart. It's all in the timing. It's all in the joke. She's very present and for the most famous person in the world, she is incredibly approachable, and I love that," Rossdale said. "Dinner with Gavin Rossdale" can be watched on VIZIO's free streaming service, WatchFree+.
