Pittsburgh Steelers are underestimated again but Mike Tomlin is assembling as surprise playoff push in silence

(Image via Getty: Mike Tomlin) Mike Tomlin has been the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2007. During all these years, he never had a losing season, which is very rare in the NFL. Nevertheless, he has never received the NFL Coach of the Year award. Numerous individuals within the football community now think that 2025 may be the year Mike Tomlin will at last receive that recognition. Next season is not shaping up to be an easy one for the Steelers , but that might just benefit Mike Tomlin's argument. Mike Tomlin has toughest test in 2025 but may at last win Coach of the Year This season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are not regarded as a strong team by most analysts. This past May of 2025, prior to the season beginning, analysts on NFL Network and ESPN were forecasting that the Pittsburgh Steelers could only go 9-8 this season. The team made some puzzling moves during the offseason. They traded wide receiver Diontae Johnson on March 12, 2025, for draft picks in the future. They did not bring in a definitive top quarterback either, though Aaron Rodgers rumors were the talk in early April. In spite of this, Mike Tomlin is unshaken. At a press conference on May 5, 2025, in Pittsburgh, he stated, "Every season has new challenges. That's part of the job. But I believe in this group." His optimism has players and fans anxiously observing. If Mike Tomlin is able to get this team into the playoffs, it will be difficult for the league to disregard his work. Offense and defense can stealthily propel Pittsburgh Steelers into playoff conversation The Pittsburgh Steelers have made some adjustments that may serve them well. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has constructed a scheme that plays to the strengths of quarterback Mason Rudolph. Running back Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson are impressive. Tight end Pat Freiermuth and wide receiver D.K. Metcalf will be a major target. The defense is younger now, with new faces on the line and depth at linebacker. There are questions in the secondary, but Mike Tomlin said on May 10 via 'We'll clean things up in camp.' Cam Heyward on George Pickens trade: We could be a better team because of it

George Pickens was the Steelers' leading wide receiver the past two seasons. He just turned 24 and still is on his rookie contract, counting $3.656 million against the cap in 2025. Yet, the Steelers traded him anyway. Anytime Mike Tomlin trades a wide receiver, it's buyer beware. The Steelers traded Santonio Holmes in 2010 for a fifth-rounder, Martavis Bryant in 2018 for a third-rounder, Antonio Brown in 2019 for third- and fifth-rounders, Chase Claypool in 2023 for a second-rounder, Diontae Johnson in 2024 for Donte Jackson and a pick swap and now Pickens for a third and a pick swap. None performed as well with their new team. That was a point Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward made on his Not Just Football Pod. 'I think we've got to look at the track record of trading wide receivers,' Heyward said. 'There's been some good history behind this and when to do it, what to expect. I was looking at a stat. There's only been like three or four receivers that made it past the rookie contracts with the Steelers. It's crazy. 'You had AB; you had Diontae Johnson; you had Hines Ward; I think you had JuJu [Smith-Schuster] for another year. For the most part, they know when to re-sign and when to trade, and we'll see what happens. We could be a better team because of it.' Heyward woke up to the news like everyone else did May 7. He called it a surprise, though the Steelers appeared done with Pickens when they traded a second-round pick to the Seahawks and invested a five-year, $150 million contract in receiver DK Metcalf. 'I didn't know anything about it. . . . I woke up the next morning, and he had been traded,' Heyward said. 'Was I surprised? Yeah, but the game is the game. I know it benefits both teams. We get another third-round pick. They get a wide receiver to go along with CeeDee Lamb. Would I have liked to see George and DK play together? Yeah, but hopefully there's something in the works. I don't know.'

Browns Linked to Trade For Joe Flacco Receiver Favorite

As the Cleveland Browns attempt to solve their quarterback problem, they're also trying to work through a receiver issue. After re-signing Joe Flacco to compete for the starting job under center, general manager Andrew Berry then drafted Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders in the NFL Draft earlier this month. Advertisement Those three were added to the QB room that already included Kenny Pickett, whom Berry traded for earlier this offseason. But the WR room is even more sketchy than the QB room. The 90-man offseason roster includes Jerry Jeudy, DeAndre Carter, Diontae Johnson, Kaden Davis, Gage Larvadain, Ja'Seem Reed, Jamari Thrash, Cedric Tillman and Michael Woods II. That receiving corps hardly instills fear in opposing defenses. Pro Football Focus thinks the Browns should attempt to trade for Colts wideout Alec Pierce. Not because of his out-of-this-world numbers, because he doesn't have those. But because he played with Flacco last season in Indy. Advertisement "Declining to select a receiver in the 2025 NFL Draft has left Cleveland in a precarious spot," PFF wrote. "The team's recent signing of Diontae Johnson is a cheap alternative with potential upside or possibly an empty addition, given his recent issues. That still leaves the door open for this offense to add an impact X receiver via trade. One option could be Alec Pierce, who played with Joe Flacco in Indianapolis last season, where he earned a 73.3 PFF receiving grade while catching passes from the veteran." The 25-year-old is a former second-round pick of the Colts in 2022, taken at No. 53 overall. In three seasons since, he's caught 110 balls for 1,931 yards and 11 touchdowns across 49 games. Last season, with Flacco throwing him the ball, Pierce led the NFL with 22.3 yards per reception on 37 catches for 824 yards. Browns Sign Gifted Free Agent Receiver Desperate to Fix Career

The Cleveland Browns are searching for answers at wide receiver as much as they are at quarterback. That's evidenced by the fact that they signed journeyman wide receiver Diontae Johnson to a contract. Johnson signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $1.17 million with no guaranteed money. If he's cut at any point before Week 1, the team won't have to pay him anything. Advertisement The six-year veteran - desperate in a sense - might give the word "journeyman" a new definition. After being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson spent five seasons with the black and gold before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in March 2024. The following October, Johnson was traded to the Baltimore Ravens before being waived the following December after a contentious stay that included a suspension for refusing to enter the Week 13 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles. That means the former Toledo wideout was with four teams in the 2024 calendar year that included two trades, a suspension and being placed on waivers twice. Advertisement Now, he'll attempt to make good with the NFL in Cleveland, where few wide receivers have had success and where the quarterback situation is sketchy at best. Johnson's best season as a pro came in 2021 with the Steelers when he posted 107 receptions for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns and added five carries for another 53 yards on the ground. He also matched a career high with two fumbles that season. Johnson has never come close to another 1,000-yard season since. Related: Browns Shedeur Sanders Move Could Mean Trade?
