Cops nab mastermind of over 1cr heist after chase of more than a yr

Jaipur: City police Friday arrested the mastermind behind a Rs 1.5 crore heist, who was evading arrest for more than a year by shifting hideouts across states. SHO (Vidhyadhar Nagar) Rakesh Khyalia said Abhishek Singh (27), a resident of Mojika Altika Building in the Khoh Nagoriyan area of the city, used the stolen cash to buy a dumper truck and retrieve his wife's jewellery that was pawned in a bank. Earlier, police arrested four suspects, including a woman, in the case. Police announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for Singh's arrest, but he managed to escape by frequently moving between Haryana, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand. Singh has over half a dozen cases against him, including of murder, kidnapping, and Arms Act violations. To outsmart investigators, he regularly watched crime shows on YouTube and social media to study police procedures. The heist took place last year when a person told police that company staffer Vijay Kumar kept a cupboard at his Bhati Complex residence containing Rs 1.5 crore in cash, which was stolen on June 21. Singh enlisted the help of many of his accomplices, including a woman, Dipti, who befriended Kumar weeks before the crime. Dipti then drugged Kumar during a visit to his home. Then she called in the gang, who loaded the cupboard onto a pickup truck. Singh fled with the truck. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Woman tantrik booked for cheating family of Rs 5 lakh under guise of exorcism in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A woman who claims to be a spiritual guru from slum pockets of transit camp at Parksite at Vikhroli has been booked for alleged exploitation under the guise of exorcism, and invocation of the Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act and cheating of Rs 5 lakhs under pretext of curing a woman undergoing mental treatment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Parksite Police have booked a woman self-proclaimed tantrik, identified as Mehjabeen Rais Khan alias Hazrat (Mariam), age 38 and are looking for him. The complaint was filed by Sunil Yashwant Salvi (48), a resident of Sagarnagar, Vikhroli, who accused Mariam of defrauding his mentally ill sister-in-law, Dipti Salvi, and manipulating the family into handing over nearly Rs 3 lakh worth of gold ornaments. Dipti and her husband Anil Salvi had been consulting Mariam for supposed black magic remedies for Dipti's condition. Mariam allegedly told Salvi that one woman has committed suicide in their area and Dipti owed her money and hence the deceased's spirit is troubling her. She also extracted huge sums of money for sacrificing a goat and doing other rituals. Using this fear tactic involving stories of ghosts and curses, Mariam allegedly coerced their daughter, Riddhi Salvi, into stealing family jewelry from their home. Salvi stated that Mariam claimed the ornaments were required to 'remove the ghost' from Dipti's body, and repeatedly summoned the girl and her father to deliver valuables. Police have registered a case under sections of cheating and the Maharashtra Human Sacrifice and Black Magic Act. Investigations are ongoing to determine if more victims or accomplices are involved in the racket.
