United's tournament runs ends in district final
PARMA, Ohio (WKBN) – Rootstown topped United 8-3 in the Division VI Baseball District Championship on Friday at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma. The Rovers plated three runs in the first inning, taking control for good. United's Parker Newburn and Carter Simmons each drove in a run for United in the setback. Kadin Schonauer allowed four earned 5 runs (2 earned) with five strikeouts. Quentin Taylor allowed three earned runs (2 earned) in three innings in relief. Brady Kreitzburg picked up the win on the mound for Rootstown. Rootstown advances to face Lake Center Christian in the Division VI Regional Semifinals on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Louisville High School. United ends the season with a record of 20-8. Cardinal Mooney claims first District Title since 2013
MENTOR, Ohio (WKBN) – Cardinal Mooney rolled past Keystone 9-0 in the Division V Baseball District Championship at Mentor High School. It is the Cardinals' first District Championship since 2013. Ford Stacy went 3-4 with 4 RBI in the win for the Cardinals. He also pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts in the victory. Will Petty also drove in a pair of runs on two hits. Ryan Reese and Andrew Bushey each tallied three hits and an RBI for Mooney. With the win, Cardinal Mooney improves to 19-6 overall on the season. Sharpsville softball falls in district title game
ERIE, Pa. (WKBN) – Sharpsville softball loses to Seneca in the Class 2A District Championship game, 14-5, at Penn State Behrend Monday afternoon. Watch above for extended highlights. Sharpsville's Izzie Candiotti drove in two runs with two hits in the loss. The Blue Devils as a team posted eight hits in the defeat. Seneca's Haylee Farrell led the way for the Bobcats with one home run and drove in four runs in the win. The Blue Devils were down, 6-5, until the Bobcats rattled off an eight-run sixth inning on the way to victory. Champion wins third consecutive district title
HUBBARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Champion softball defeated Poland, 9-1, to claim another Division V District Championship on Saturday. Flashes senior Gabby Gradishar tossed as complete game with 11 strikeouts across 7 innings in the circle while also collecting two hits on offense with two runs batted in and two intentional walks. Poland's Lillian McDonald crushed a solo home run as the Bulldogs' season comes to an end with a 13-13 record. With the win, Champion improves to 20-5 overall and advances to take on South Range (22-9) in the regional semifinal game scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 at YSU Softball Complex. Austintown Fitch runs away with 4th straight District Championship
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Austintown Fitch claimed their fourth consecutive District Championship with a 10-0 win over Strongsville on Friday at YSU's Covelli Sports Complex. The two-time defending State champions took advantage of eight Mustang errors and finished the game in the sixth inning by run rule. The Falcons, who have earned the Number One seed for five consecutive seasons, started the scoring in the second inning with four runs. They added five more in the fourth, and plated the game winner in the bottom of the sixth.
