IWU hosts NCAA Div. III Softball Championship games this week

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The NCAA is in central Illinois and it's a good thing. Illinois Wesleyan is hosting the NCAA Division III Softball Championship this week. Eight teams, from coast to coast, are in Bloomington to compete for the national title at Inspiration Field. The double-elimination tournament runs from May 29-June 4. 'It's an opportunity to host teams from all over the country and to showcase Bloomington-Normal and see what we are all about. And, of course, Illinois Wesleyan,' said IWU athletics director Mike Wagner. The eight teams playing in the 2025 Div. III Softball World Series are Virginia Wesleyan from Virginia Beach, Randolph-Macon College of Ashland, Virginia, Linfield University of Oregon, Saint Mary's in Minnesota, Rowan University of Glassboro, NJ, Texas Lutheran, Trine from Angola, Indiana and Redlands College of California. IWU made the NCAA field and won two games in the regional but fell short of getting home to play for the national title. Nonetheless, the Titans hope to provide a championship experience for everyone as the tournament host. 'We'll try to make this experience the best we possibly can for the student-athletes and the teams that are in town here for this week,' Wagner said. IWU will host the NCAA Div. III volleyball national tournament in November. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Amherst Cinema cutting back on showtimes

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)– An iconic arthouse movie theater in Amherst is looking to cut costs while still serving the community. The Amherst Cinema says they have seen losses for the past three years due to ticket sales and memberships not returning to pre-covid sales and an increase in overhead costs. As a result, they have decided to discontinue showtimes that show the least attendance: Sundays at 9pm and Wednesdays at 2pm and 9pm. The Masked Morning program is now on Sundays only. These western Mass. colleges compete in NCAA Div. III tournament The Cinema decided that reducing its operations from four to three screens is the mostsustainable path forward. As a result, in mid-May, the Cinema will permanently shutter its Studio Theater (a space it leases rather than owns) and proportionally reduce staff to align with operations. 'We're taking measures to reduce costs as part of a broader organization-wide sustainability plan, directing resources where they can have the greatest impact and safeguarding our ability to deliver on our mission. We will also redouble efforts to increase membership levels and philanthropic gifts,' said Barton Byg, president and chair of the Cinema's Board of Directors. Despite the losses, the Cinema is still committed to bringing the same caliber and quality of films and special event programs, and has invested in upgrades with the latest equipment for improved projection and sound quality. The Amherst Cinema is an independent nonprofit arts and education center and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
