Sage Hill boys' volleyball secures state title with sweep in Division III final
Sage Hill boys' volleyball swiftly put up one program first after another over the last two seasons, the crown jewel arriving Saturday in the inaugural state championships. When the hardware was handed off to Sage Hill coach Jordan Hoppe, he raised the trophy — shaped like the state of California — above his head. His players surrounded him and began chanting in celebration. This was the pinnacle of a two-year run led by a transformative force in Jackson Cryst, the 6-foot-10 outside hitter headed to Long Beach State. Cryst had 23 kills, three service aces and 1½ total blocks, as Sage Hill swept San Francisco International 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 in the CIF State Division III final at Fresno City College. 'It was a business trip, and I think everybody took it really seriously, and that's why we got the result that we wanted,' said Cryst, who transferred from Long Beach Millikan for his junior year. 'Nobody came in there to mess around, and I think that showed in the clean sweep.' Sage Hill (23-11) finished the season on a 13-match winning streak, which also saw the Lightning claim a second section title in as many seasons by beating Santa Barbara on the Dons' home court in five sets in the Division 4 final. 'The season's over now,' Cryst added. 'I think for so long, it was always on to the next game. Even after winning CIF, we knew the job wasn't finished. To finally be able to know that the season was over, we did all we could and we won and we reached that goal, I think that was super motivating for everybody. It was honestly a huge relief. If you look at everybody on match point, it was almost like a huge sigh of relief that we did it.' Junior Connor Gapp, who split his playing time between the positions of setter and opposite, supplied 24 assists, six kills, three aces and 1½ blocks. 'It's kind of like a symbol of what we've done,' Gapp said of bringing home a state championship trophy. 'Winning felt the best, and touching that trophy, maybe taking a few pictures with my teammates, my coaches, my trainer, my family, especially, that was really sweet to be with all of them. 'The trophy will always be up at Sage. The banners will always be there. It will be nice to look at that next year, maybe give us some motivation to do something similar in the future.' Junior setter Jonathan Ye contributed 14 assists and an ace. Junior outside hitter Ryan Manesh added 11 kills and an ace. Junior middle blocker Carson Ellis had two kills and two block assists, and junior opposite Dylan Han chipped in with three kills. Manesh struck a similar chord to Gapp, noting the 'journey' that led the Lightning to the championships was what was most important to him. He recalled the team bonding experiences, such as playing card games on the bus. 'These memories are going to last a lifetime,' Manesh said. 'Obviously, winning the finals, that has a special place in my heart, but like the team, the team culture, the team bonding, just this team as a whole, I'm going to remember them for the rest of my life.' Santino Scanlon had eight kills, an ace and a solo block to lead International (27-8). Lyndon Song and Liam Wilson each produced five kills, and Colton Klingebiel added four kills and two blocks. Hoppe reflected on the title, saying 'it's very cool to be on the right side of history.' 'To be able to do that is just an incredibly special achievement and honor,' Hoppe said of bringing Sage Hill its first state title in a male sport since the school opened in 2000. 'To be remembered in the gymnasium with a banner up there and just to think about the guys on this team, and just the total buy-in of all the individuals on this team. It was incredible. 'Clearly, we had arguably one of the best players in the country, Jackson Cryst, but that's just one player. Our team was able to really buy in and elevate their game to support and to provide the right team chemistry to make this thing happen.'

Westwood's Izzy Walsh supplied the heroics in the bottom of the seventh, delivering an RBI single to capture a 4-3 Division 2 softball win over Malden Catholic. 4. Going, going, gone Power came in bunches, with Bedford's Alyx Rossi and King Philip's Petrillo both blasting a pair of home runs in wins. Boys' lacrosse has a home After a long search, a venue has been secured for the boys' lacrosse finals. All four divisions will play at Mass. Maritime Academy's Clean Harbor Stadium in Bourne on June 14. Game times are scheduled for 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. Time slots will be assigned to the divisions based on the finalists. Love leads Fermanagh to top of group four to secure home quarter-final in Tailteann Cup
Tailteann Cup Group 4: Fermanagh 0-25 (0-1-23) Wexford 1-17 (1-4-9) The romance of the Tailteann Cup? Love was certainly in the air at Croke Park where Fermanagh forward Conor Love gave a terrific individual display to seal victory, top spot in Group 4 and a home quarter-final fixture. Love netted in Fermanagh's surprise Round one loss to Carlow and added 1-2 in the subsequent win over Longford but came of age on the bigger stage, scoring a whopping 0-9 at GAA HQ. His very last score was the only one that wasn't from play as the Enniskillen man tortured the Wexford defence with an exhibition of point taking. Wexford began the day top of the group themselves but must now settle for second position - edging out Carow on scoring difference - and a home preliminary quarter-final. They led by two points at half-time but were overwhelmed after the break and slipped to their second Croke Park defeat this season after losing to Limerick in the Division 4 league final. Darragh McGurn, wearing number nine but operating much closer to goal, impressed for Fermanagh too, pinching three points while Garvan Jones sniped their only two-pointer. Joe McDade was influential as well for a Fermanagh side that suggested they have the quality to go at least a step further than their quarter-final placings in 2022 and 2024. They trailed by six points after the opening quarter as Wexford struck 1-5 without response between the 12th and 18th minutes, opening up a 1-5 to 0-2 lead. Sean Nolan struck the Wexford goal and finished with 1-4, helping his team to lead by 1-8 to 0-9 at half-time. Fermanagh put clear daylight between the teams in the third quarter, slotting five single points in a row. McGurn and Love notched two each during that period of dominance to leave Fermanagh two points clear, 0-14 to 1-9. Wexford got it back to level terms at 1-13 to 0-16 but, crucially, never got on top again and Fermanagh pulled decisively clear in the closing 15 minutes or so. Love added four more points in that final period as Wexford struggled to cope with his movement and razor sharp left foot. Jones hoisted over Fermanagh's two-pointer in the 63rd minute, a timely score that left five between them. Love shines at Croke Park as Fermanagh see off Wexford to top Group 4
Seven second-half points from Conor Love powered Fermanagh past Wexford and to a top-place finish in Group 4 of the Tailteann Cup after Sunday's clash at Croke Park. Fermanagh quickly asserted after trailing by 1-8 to 0-9 at half-time to take control of proceedings, with Love on song as midfielder Darragh McGurn also made his presence felt. It completed an exemplary recovery by Fermanagh from their shock opening day loss to Carlow as they secure a fortnight's break and a home quarter-final. Wexford, meanwhile, after a second defeat at GAA HQ this season – having lost the Division 4 league final to Limerick – must settle for a home preliminary quarter-final. Wexford overcame a jittery start to respond by crafting a 1-3 to 0-2 lead after thirteen minutes. Fionan O'Brien slotted over a second-minute free for Fermanagh as Kieran Donnelly's men attacked with some relish from the start. And Ronan McCaffrey was denied a goal for the Ulster men at the expense of a fruitless '45 in the seventh minute after a neat move involving Conor McGee and Conor Love, shortly before midfielder Joe McDade settled Fermanagh into a 0-2 to no-score advantage. Wexford eventually hit their stride to turn the tables in quite some fashion. Páraic Hughes levelled with a two-pointer before Mark Rossiter turned over the subsequent kick-out to send Seán Nolan haring in from the Cusack Stand side to slot to the net in the twelfth minute (1-2 to 0-2). Both sides went close with goal chances before Rossiter boosted Wexford further with another two-pointer, but Fermanagh remained dangerous as O'Brien, McDade and Love shaved the margin to 1-5 to 0-5 after 24 minutes. The Ernesiders generated another goal threat, with Wexford 'keeper Darragh Brooks saving low from the lively Fionan O'Brien. Wexford had a third two-pointer – midfielder Niall Hughes obliging – to lead 1-7 to 0-6 before their rivals grabbed the last three points of the half to close to within 1-8 to 0-9 at the change-of-ends as Ryan Lyons, Ronan McCaffrey and Josh Largo-Ellis hit warning signals for their opponents. The winners' misfortune in front of goal was added to seven minutes into the second-half when wing-back Shane McGullion was sent through the middle by Largo-Ellis only to see his drive fly over off the crossbar and restore parity (0-12 to 1-9). That arrived in an unanswered five-point burst as Fermanagh took hold by 0-14 to 1-9 after 45 minutes with the aid of doubles from midfielder Darragh McGurn and Conor Love. While Glen Malone and free-taker Seán Nolan had Wexford back on terms after 54 minutes (1-13 to 0-16), Fermanagh were in command at that stage, and a two-pointer from Garvan Jones allied to Love's continued excellent finishing ensured they surged to the summit of the group.
