Tyler Perry's Divorced Sistas make BET+ history
Tyler Perry has been a trending topic lately, with one reason being his new BET+ series, Tyler Perry's Divorced Sistas. The LeToya Luckett-led drama made history on the streaming platform as the most-watched series premiere, something it accomplished within just three weeks. According to a press release, the premiere has not only outperformed every BET+ series since the service launched in September 2019, but it has also significantly boosted the platform with a record 415,000 new subscription starts. Divorced Sistas is on the brink of concluding its eight-episode season, which has garnered much attention on social media with fans posting clips of popular scenes and starting conversations about the characters. The series follows the lives of five friends: Rasheda (Luckett), Geneva (Khadeen Indréa), Naomi (Porscha Coleman), Tiffany (Briana Price), and Bridgette (Jennifer Sears). They're all battling life and relationship woes at some stage of divorce, marriage, and dating, but it's the battle within their circle that tests their true character and love for one another. Guest stars include DeVon Franklin, RonReaco Lee, and more. Tyler Perry has several series on different platforms currently showing new episodes or have upcoming seasons. His Netflix series She The People will reportedly undergo a name change after the owner of a nonprofit organization (who has a trademark) filed a lawsuit. It stars Terri J. Vaughn, who is most known for her role as Lavita on the '90s series The Steve Harvey Show. Other popular shows include House of Payne, Sistas, Zatima, All the Queen's Men, Assisted Living, and more. If the mood of Divorced Sistas feels familiar, it's because there are classic shows that also follow a group of women friends in different stages of their lives. Two are Living Single and Girlfriends.

‘Tyler Perry's Divorced Sistas' are older, more jaded than ‘Sistas'
ATLANTA - Divorce can be a relief or unmitigated trauma. Or both. Tyler Perry leans into the trauma in his newest BET+ show "Divorced Sistas," which is wholly separate from his BET+ drama "Sistas." In this case, he explores the trials and tribulations of five Atlanta women, longtime friends in their 30s and 40s, some divorced, some in struggling marriages. And so far, the show ― which debuted in June ― is doing well. BET+ said it's been its most popular original series to date without providing specific viewership numbers. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution spoke to four of the five lead women via Zoom last month. Only LeToya Luckett, the most well-known name on the cast, was absent. The five actors had only a brief time to bond before production, including brunch at Perry's home in Douglasville. "He's having the waiters serve us," said Porscha Coleman, who plays Naomi. "He told us, 'Get ready! It's going to be crazy!'" "He's a very gracious host," said Jennifer Sears, who plays Bridgette. "We knew we were supported. That really set the tone for the whole production." (This interview was conducted before news came out of a lawsuit by a former actor accusing Perry of alleged sexual assault.) Here's a summary of the five women: Rasheeda (LeToya Luckett) Luckett, the former Destiny's Child member, has thrived as an actress the past 15 years and has spent plenty of time in Atlanta, shooting other projects like VH1's "Single Ladies" and OWN's "Greenleaf." Rasheeda, the first lady of God's Light Christian Church, has been married to the pastor Jeff (Devon Franklin) for many years. While they profess love for each other in public and sometimes in private, their sexless relationship has curdled into a cesspool of resentment, anger and loss of respect. The never-ending arguments early in the series point to even more drama later. Naomi (Porscha Coleman) Naomi was married to a super-rich guy for 20 years. But he cheated on her with a white woman, then left her for that same woman. Naomi, a spirited woman with minimal filter, remains in a rage about it. "She wants what she wants when she wants it," Coleman said. "But underneath her tough exterior is someone who is hurt and broken. She is trying to find resolution." Naomi pocketed $37 million from her ex in the settlement so many viewers via social media don't feel bad for her. "They are saying she needs to just take a vacation and get a new boo," Coleman said. "But others say if she has $37 million, she has money to be petty. The fans are already locked in and engaged." Naomi's friends love her, flaws and all. They try to "manage" her drinking and paper over her most extreme actions. Then again, Rasheeda's husband Pastor Jeff can't believe she remains friends with her, dubbing Naomi "ratchet" and "low down." Geneva (Khadeen Indréa) A busy partner in a high-powered law firm, Geneva also seems to be in a solid marriage with William (RonReaco Lee), who comes across as a straight-up good guy. "Professionally, she has her act together." Indréa said. "She relies on the facade of who she believes Geneva should be to the world. We'll see how that facade crumbles over time." Six years earlier, Geneva had an affair with a married man, the dapper fellow attorney Javon (Robert Christopher Riley). But once it ended, he disappeared and she moved on. But he has now reappeared in her life, freshly divorced. His presence accentuates her doubts about her marriage. What's worse, Javon is buddies with William, who is trying to set Javon up with Tiffany, one of Geneva's single friends. (Awkward!) Bridgette (Jennifer Sears) Sears, who plays Rasheeda's right-hand woman Bridgette at the church, is one of two cast members who has experienced divorce. (Luckett has had two.) "I can say fortunately I haven't seen myself in any of these women," Sears said. "But it can get ugly. I did see a little bit of Naomi in myself: 'I want him to pay!' I think the takeaway people get from these stories is it starts with you. You have to do all work to heal and find peace within yourself and not find it externally. That helped me in my own healing process." Bridgette, like Geneva, is excellent at her job, but her choice of men is suspect. Vaughn, her much younger boyfriend, is a 29-year-old self-described "content creator" who has a hard time holding down a regular job. He is also a bit rough around the edges, and she is mildly embarrassed to bring him around her friends. "Bridgette is good at projects," Sears said. "So Vaughn is a project for her. She also spends time supporting her friends and their issues as a distraction from her own relationship." By coincidence, she and Luckett previously played sisters in "Greenleaf," the OWN show executive produced by Oprah Winfrey. "We have built-in chemistry," she said. "In this industry, you find your way back to each other." Tiffany (Briana Price) Tiffany, a real estate agent, seems to be the most stable of the five women. She is more than three years removed from her divorce and is ready to date again. Unfortunately, Geneva's well-meaning hubby sets Tiffany up with Geneva's affair partner. It seems obvious by episode four that this is going to end badly for everyone involved. "I like to think of her as the balance compared to some of the more incendiary elements among her friends," Price said. "She has a lid on some of her own dysfunction. She is that loyal, reliable friend. But things are going to start to disintegrate between her and some of her friends." --- If you watch "Divorced Sistas," available on BET+, with new episodes every Thursday through July 24. --- Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Tyler Perry Accused of Sexual Assault and Harassment by The Oval Actor Derek Dixon in New Lawsuit
Tyler Perry is being accused of sexual harassment and assault by an actor on his hit BET show The Oval, according to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on June 13. Derek Dixon, who has appeared as Dale in more than 80 episodes of the White House-centric soap, is seeking $260 million in punitive damages against Perry, who serves as The Oval's creator, writer, director and executive producer. 'This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam,' Perry's attorney Matthew Boyd told our sister site Variety in a statement. 'But Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.' According to Dixon, the harassment began shortly after he met Perry while working for an event company that organized a party for one of Perry's projects in 2019. This meeting led to Dixon appearing in several episodes of The Oval spinoff Ruthless, before having his character transferred over to the flagship series. In the suit, Dixon recalls staying at Perry's Atlanta home in 2020. According to documents, Dixon was too inebriated to drive home, so Perry offered to let him stay in a guest room. Perry allegedly followed Dixon into bed and began touching him suggestively, at which point Dixon says he jumped out of bed and made it clear that he 'was not into sex.' In one text exchange, Perry allegedly asks Dixon what it's going to take for him to have 'guiltless sex.' When Dixon says he has 'religious guilt,' Perry supposedly replies, 'I have friends in their 50s and 60s who are still dealing with that and it's so sad. You can … have freedom from religious guilt and still believe in Christ.' But Dixon's allegations aren't limited to his own experiences with Perry. The suit claims that Perry 'has been using his power and influence to molest, abuse, and sexually assault impressionable and vulnerable employees and actors who look to him for guidance and mentorship while pursuing their dreams,' likening him to Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby and even Sean 'Diddy' Combs. Tyler Perry's Hit BET+ Series ‘Sistas' Gets ‘Divorced Sistas' Spinoff Starring LeToya Luckett
Tyler Perry is expanding the world of Sistas yet again with a brand new spinoff series, Divorced Sistas, set to premiere this summer on BET and its streaming service, BET+ — coinciding with the 2025 BET Awards. Leading Divorced Sistas is the talented LeToya Luckett, known for her role in Greenleaf, alongside a strong lineup that includes Khadeen Indréa (Ellis Ever After), Porscha Coleman (Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!), Briana Price (Step Up: High Water), Jennifer Sears (Madea's Family Funeral), RonReaco Lee (Survivor's Remorse), DeVon Franklin (Kingdom Business), Donovan Christie Jr. (The Oval), and Robert Christopher Riley (Dynasty). According to the series' synopsis, the spinoff centers on five close friends — Rasheda, Geneva, Naomi, Tiffany, and Bridgette — as they 'navigate life, love and the challenges that come with divorce, marriage and dating. As they lean on each other through heartbreak and healing, their biggest test comes from within their own circle, challenging their loyalty, character and true bond of sisterhood.' 'This is a story of resilience and the power of female friendship,' stated Perry about the show. 'I hope audiences fall in love with these dynamic characters and are able to explore their own personal truths about healing and love through them.' This exciting new project marks the second spinoff of the Sistas franchise — following the success of Zatima — and is the first under Perry's expanded multiyear content partnership with BET Media Group. The series is created, written, and directed by Perry. Divorced Sistas premiers on June 9. See the trailer below. More from Terri J.
