Putin To Meet US President Next Week; No Talks Planned With Zelenskyy, Says Russian Diplomat

Last Updated: There has been no summit between US and Russian leaders since President Vladimir Putin met former President Joe Biden in Geneva in June 2021. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to meet his US counterpart next week, said Moscow's deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy on Thursday. He also mentioned that he was unaware of any meeting planned between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. 'As far as I heard, there are a number of locations, but they agreed to something that they don't want to disclose. The timeline is, I think, next week, but that's again judging from what presidents said themselves," Polyanskiy told reporters. He also added that he did not hear anything about Russia and Ukraine meeting. 'I haven't heard about any meeting planned with President Zelenskiy, but I am not in the loop," he added. Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, citing what it described as threats to its national security. However, Kyiv and its Western allies have condemned the move as an unprovoked, imperial-style land grab. While President Trump has vowed to end Russia's war in Ukraine, his promise still remains unfulfilled even seven months after he assumed office as the President. In his comments to reporters, Moscow's deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy also weighed in on the Middle East, condemning any Israeli plans regarding Gaza. 'We think that this is a very bad step in an absolutely wrong direction, and we condemn this kind of action," he said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel plans to take full military control of the Gaza Strip, despite mounting international criticism of its nearly two-year-long offensive on the Palestinian enclave, which has triggered a hunger crisis and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Trump wants deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine by Aug 8

President Donald Trump said the US would impose tariffs and other measures on Russia if Moscow showed no progress toward ending its war in Ukraine. (AP pic) UNITED NATIONS : US President Donald Trump has made clear that he wants a deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine by Aug 8, the US told the UN Security Council on Thursday. 'Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear this must be done by Aug 8. The US is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace,' senior US diplomat John Kelley told the 15-member council. Trump said on Tuesday that the US would start imposing tariffs and other measures on Russia '10 days from today' if Moscow showed no progress toward ending its war in Ukraine. Kyiv and Moscow have held three rounds of talks in Istanbul this year that yielded exchanges of prisoners and bodies, but no breakthrough to defuse the more than three-year conflict. 'We intend to continue the negotiations in Istanbul,' Russia's deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told the council, but he added: 'Despite the meetings in Istanbul, in the West, the war party did not go away … We continue hearing voices of those who think that diplomacy is just a way of criticising Russia and exerting pressure on it.' Ukraine's deputy UN ambassador Khrystyna Hayovyshyn said Russia must be confronted with 'unity, resolve and action'. 'We seek a comprehensive, just and lasting peace grounded in the principles of the UN Charter and nothing less. We repeat – a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire is essential. It is the first step to halting Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine,' she told the council.

Russia, US have 'satisfactory working contacts' in UN

United Nations, May 9 (UNI) Russia and the United States have established "satisfactory working contacts" in the United Nations, with the official appointment of the US Permanent Representative. Russia expects more decisive actions from the American diplomatic mission, Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy told RIA Novosti. "We have established quite satisfactory working contacts with the current team of the American Permanent Mission, which allow us to interact on the entire spectrum of UN issues. Nevertheless, the Permanent Representative is the Permanent Representative, and with his arrival we can expect more decisive actions from the American diplomatic mission in fulfillment of the directives and priorities of President Donald Trump. The sooner this moment comes, the better," Polyanskiy said. Last week, Trump announced the dismissal of then-National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, the main figure in the scandal with the leak of classified information through the Signal messenger. The US leader said he would nominate Waltz for the post of the next US Ambassador to the UN. Trump said the national security advisor's duties would temporarily go to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who would also retain his position at the State Department. UNI SPUTNIK GNK

Russia-Ukraine talks can happen ‘quite soon' - Russian Mission to UN

United Nations, May 1 (UNI) The ceasefire negotiations between Moscow and Kiev can happen "quite soon" if Ukraine makes efforts to resolve root causes of the conflict, Russian Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy told RIA Novosti. "The ball is in the court of [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, whether to accept it or not, and if there is a serious, meaningful effort to bring about the resolution of the problems that led to this crisis. I think that this can happen quite soon," Polyanskiy said when asked when the ceasefire could be achieved. Moscow has called for diplomatic solutions for a long time, including at the UN Security Council, he added. Polyanskiy also highlighted that Moscow made its 'final effort' in 2021, when draft security treaties were proposed to the United States and NATO. However, Russia's "preference for diplomatic ways of resolving crisis did not change," the diplomat noted. UNI SPUTNIK GNK

Trump ‘sincerely' wants peace in Ukraine - Russian Mission to UN

United Nations, May 1 (UNI) US President Donald Trump genuinely wishes to end the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow is grateful for all his hard efforts, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy told RIA Novosti. "I think he sincerely wants peace in Ukraine, and he really deploys a great effort to make it happen. And we're very thankful for the new administration," Polyanskiy said when asked to evaluate the results of President Trump's peace negotiations on Ukraine within the 100-day period. The Russian diplomat also said that it is "very important" that the US seems to "understand the root causes" of the Ukraine conflict :in the right way." On Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the phone to underscore the next steps in Russia-Ukraine peace talks and the need to end the conflict now. This call followed the visit of US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow, where he was welcomed by Russian President Putin. UNI SPUTNIK GNK
