Ukraine war briefing: Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv leaves four dead and 20 injured
Russia attacked several Ukrainian regions with Russian ballistic missiles and drones early on Friday, officials said, with Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko saying four people were killed and 20 injured in the capital. Multiple explosions were heard in the city and falling debris triggered fires across several districts as air defence systems tried to intercept incoming targets, said the Kyiv city administration's head, Tymur Tkachenko. Authorities reported damage in several districts and rescue workers were responding at multiple locations. Officials urged residents to seek shelter. A fire broke out in a 16-story residential building in Kyiv's Solomyanskyi district and emergency services evacuated three people from the apartment. Rescue operations were continuing. Another fire broke out in a metal warehouse. Tymchenko said the metro tracks between two stations in Kyiv were damaged in the attack but no fire or injuries occurred. A Shahed drone exploded near an apartment building in northern Ukraine's Chernihiv region, shattering windows and doors, the regional military administration chief said. Explosions from ballistic missiles were also recorded on the city's outskirts, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi added. The attacks came after Russia accused Kyiv of state terrorism over its drone operation striking Russian heavy bomber planes at air bases in Siberia and the far north at the weekend and said it it would respond as and when its military saw fit, as reported by Andrew Roth in Washington and Pjotr Sauer. US president Donald Trump said that during a call with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday he urged the Russian president to refrain from retaliating but fully expected Moscow to strike back over Ukraine's weekend assault. The US president said it may be better to let Ukraine and Russia 'fight for a while' rather than pursue peace immediately, and that he told Putin the two countries were like 'two young children fighting like crazy in a park'. The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, urged Trump to increase pressure on Russia, telling the US president at a meeting in the Oval Office that the violence Trump abhorred seeing was a result of Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The International Atomic Energy Agency's team at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine heard repeated rounds of gunfire that appeared to be aimed at drones reportedly attacking the site's training centre, the head of the UN's nuclear safety watchdog said on Thursday. There were no immediate reports of damage to the centre, it said. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un vowed to 'unconditionally support' Russia in the war at a meeting with top Russian security official Sergei Shoigu, Pyongyang state media reported.

One killed, several injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine: Officials
Russia's overnight attacks killed one person in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region and injured several others in the northern city of Chernihiv, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday. A private enterprise was hit in the small town of Balakliia, near the Russian border, killing one employee and injuring several others, said Vitali Karabanov, head of the town's military administration, on Telegram. 'A massive UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] attack on the town,' Karabanov said, without detailing the scale of the strike. The attacks came just hours after Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Turkey for peace talks, during which Moscow reiterated that it would only end the war if Kyiv surrendered more territory and accepted limitations on the size of its armed forces. Ukraine has repeatedly rejected those conditions as equivalent to surrender. In Chernihiv, falling drone debris ignited multiple fires, including at residential homes, according to Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, head of the city's military administration. Four people were hospitalized, and another 20—among them eight children—received medical assistance at the scene, Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported. Photos posted on Telegram showed firefighters battling blazes in the dark and medics attending to children. In Odesa, Russian air strikes overnight damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, but no injuries were reported, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov wrote on Telegram. The full scale of the Russian attacks was not immediately clear. There was no comment from Moscow, and Reuters could not independently verify the Ukrainian accounts. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched in February 2022. However, thousands of civilians—most of them Ukrainian—have been killed since the conflict began.

One killed, several injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine, officials say
June 3 (Reuters) - Russia's overnight attacks killed one person in Ukraine's northeastern region of Kharkiv and injured several more in the northern city of Chernihiv, regional Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday. A private enterprise was hit in the small town of Balakliia in the Kharkiv region that borders Russia, killing one employee and injuring several others, Vitali Karabanov, the head of the town's military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app. "A massive UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) attack on the town," Karabanov said, without providing details of the scale. The attacks came hours after Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Turkey for peace talks where Moscow said it would only agree to end the war if Kyiv gives up big new chunks of territory and accepts limits on the size of its army. Ukraine has repeatedly rejected the Russian conditions as tantamount to surrender. Falling drones on streets and residential buildings in the northern city of Chernihiv sparked several fires, including at residential houses, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, the head of the city's military administration, said on Telegram. Four people were hospitalised, Bryzhynskyi said. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said another 20 people, including eight children, received medical assistance at the site. The service posted photos on its Telegram account showing firefighters battling blazes in the dark and medics attending to a group of children. In the southern port city of Odesa, Russian overnight air attacks damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, but there were no injuries, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov wrote on Telegram. The full scale of the overnight Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Moscow and Reuters could not independently verify the Ukrainian reports. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.
